Row 62 round 1 review (Filbert): changes requested

Candidate: manifest sha256 ec3f7a42f3bf6436634a5a83a12bb5678ca1e58a10ff4f66a23dfca7ff3f375f, packet 6b83edc3. I applied build.patch to a detached worktree of edc5de71. All 13 entries check OK before and after my probe and mutant runs.

Discovery, install state, watch-only bucket 0, moves inside the tree, and the leave-tree rule at reconcile all work as the brief asks. I am requesting changes for one defect in the leave-tree path between reconciles.

R1 (blocking): a child that leaves the tree by losing access stops every tick until the next reconcile

The tree changes only at reconcile. A tick reads every project in ctx.tree, and any non-ok read throws. So when a child stops answering 200 to the sync bot, every tick fails for the whole business until the next reconcile drops the child. That is up to reconcileMinutes, 60 by default. The business stays ready and the adapter logs tasks demo tick tracker-forbidden every poll. Nothing on the root or any other child is recorded in that window.

Probe (tasks fake, root plus one installed child). After start I change the child, PATCH a root task's title in the UI, then tick:

Change to the child Tick Root rename recorded
none (control) ok yes
archived ok yes
moved under a project the bot can't read (test 9's "hidden") tracker-forbidden no
moved to the top level, with no direct share tracker-forbidden no
board read answers 404 (a deleted project, by fault injection; the fake has no delete) tracker-not-found no

After a reconcile the child is dropped, its task gets no-access, and ticks work again. So the data is late, not lost. But three of the brief's four ways to leave the tree ("archived, moved out, unshared or deleted") stall the root's sync. The README says "Ticks before that reconcile keep reading the project". That holds only for archive. Test 9's comment says "A tick reads the tree it has", but the test runs no tick between the change and the reconcile, so it never sees this.

Fix: in a tick, a 403 or 404 on a child's read (never the root's) should drop that child from ctx.tree and let the tick go on. Its open refs then go through missing(), which already gives no-access (200 in the same project, or 403) or not-found (404). The other choice is to skip the child for this tick and leave its refs alone until the reconcile. Either way:

  • Add a tick to test 9 after the changes, and assert that a root task change in the same tick is recorded.
  • Add a 404 case for a deleted child.
  • Name "deleted" in the README's list of ways to leave the tree, and fix the "Ticks before that reconcile" sentence.

The root keeps refusing as today.

Not blocking

  • N1: nothing tests that a failed reconcile keeps the whole previous tree. With the mutant tree-early (ctx.tree = tree set before the walk), all 63 tasks tests pass. With that mutant, a reconcile that fails partway leaves a partial tree, and the next tick would tombstone the open tasks of every child the walk had not reached. My probe partial.test.mjs passes on the candidate: a 503 on child B's views at reconcile, then a tick, gives no task.missing. Please add it, or something like it, to tree.test.
  • N2: missing-done-root-bucket survives. It replaces doneBucket(ctx.tree.get(project)) in missing() with ctx.view.done. That mutant would record the root's done bucket on a watch-only task, which is bucket state the brief forbids. The path runs when a watch-only task closes and the cursor walk misses it. The tests' behind clock should reach it. A test: a watch-only task closed outside the cursor window, snapshot bucket 0.
  • N3: leave-tree-no-keep-updated survives (the leave-tree branch without updated = c.updated). Test 9's tasks don't change after they leave, so the read updated equals the last one. An edit to the task after its project leaves the tree would tell the two apart.
  • N4: keep-negative (keep Favorites, -1), no-parent-shape and no-sort survive. The first two guard shape only, and the third changes order only. I don't ask for tests.
  • N5: the Scope section is right that trackers-boot.test.mjs:44 follows from decision 87's config line. With the line and the old test, the test fails. The added true assertion in config.test.mjs is worth keeping: the config-drops-descendants mutant fails only on it.

Mutants

Darkwing's 5 are recorded killed in out/mutants.txt. I ran 12 of my own in a second worktree (run.mjs). Each edits one source file, runs the tasks suite, and restores the file; the manifest checks OK afterwards.

  • Killed (6): all-errors-watch-only (every inspect error becomes watch-only), reconcile-falsy-bucket (the old !bucket), walk-root-project, moved-vs-root, discover-always (discover with descendants off), no-descendants-type.
  • Survived (6): tree-early (N1), missing-done-root-bucket (N2), leave-tree-no-keep-updated (N3), keep-negative, no-parent-shape, no-sort (N4).

What I checked and found right

  • With descendants off, ctx.tree holds the root only. Every changed read keeps v0's path and project. The tick's gone filter by ref is the same as v0's by id when there is one project.
  • discover() walks only from the root and follows positive parents. It skips archived projects and ids at or below 0, and replaces ctx.tree only at the end. An inspect refusal other than tracker-install propagates.
  • Moves between projects in the tree: missing() now compares the task's project with the ref's project, not the root, so A to B gets moved under A's ref. Keying placed by ref is needed for that (Darkwing's placed-by-id mutant).
  • Watch-only tasks: fieldsFor never passes 0 to taskFields. Reconcile's bucket === undefined keeps them. sync.mjs has no title or id lookup. Verbs on a child refuse task-project.
  • tracker.descendants is project-layer only, boolean, default false with provenance default. settings() refuses a non-boolean.
  • probes.md: the gate read is GET only, and it puts no host in the packet or the code.

Row 62 round 1 review (Dewey): changes requested

Candidate: agents/darkwing/work/queue-62/candidate-manifest.sha256, sha256 ec3f7a42f3bf6436634a5a83a12bb5678ca1e58a10ff4f66a23dfca7ff3f375f, packet 6b83edc3. I applied build.patch with git apply --index to a detached worktree of c809c1fd (current refactor, not the packet's edc5de71). All 13 manifest entries check OK, before and after the gate.

I request changes for one blocker. I found it independently, and it is Filbert's R1 (comment 27279). Everything else the brief asks for works: discovery, per-project install state, watch-only bucket 0, moves inside the tree, the leave-tree rule at reconcile, and the config path from tracker.descendants to the adapter.

R1 (blocking, concurring with Filbert): a child that becomes unreadable stops every tick until the next reconcile

ctx.tree changes only at reconcile, and a tick throws on any non-ok read. When a child stops answering 200 to the sync bot, every tick for the business fails until the next reconcile drops the child. That is up to reconcileMinutes, 60 by default. My probe (fake, root plus one installed child; after start I change the child, rename a root task in the UI, then tick and reconcile):

Change to the child Tick Root rename recorded by the tick After the reconcile
archived ok yes child task no-access
moved under a project the bot can't read tracker-forbidden no rename recorded, child task no-access
moved to the top level, with no direct share tracker-forbidden no rename recorded, child task no-access

Filbert's 404 row (a deleted child, tracker-not-found) is the same defect. One more effect: the poll runs notify(ctx) after tick(ctx) in the same function (adapter.mjs 192–195). So while ticks fail, credential.expiring, .expired and .changed are not recorded either.

The data arrives late, not lost, and the business stays ready. But three of the brief's four ways to leave the tree stall the root's sync, and the README sentence "Ticks before that reconcile keep reading the project" holds only for archive.

Fix as Filbert describes it: in a tick, a 403 or 404 on a child's read (never the root's) drops that child from ctx.tree and the tick goes on, so missing() gives its open refs no-access or not-found. Then:

  • Test 9 runs a tick after the changes, and asserts that a root change in the same tick is recorded.
  • Add a 404 case for a deleted child.
  • Name "deleted" in the README's leave-tree list (the brief lists it), and fix the "Ticks before that reconcile" sentence.

Not blocking: tests for paths that work but nothing checks

I ran 21 single-site mutants over sync.mjs, startup.mjs, adapter.mjs and vars.mjs, against the tasks suite plus vars.test.mjs, config.test.mjs and trackers-boot.test.mjs. The unmutated baseline passed. 12 were killed and 9 survived.

Six survivors match Filbert's N1–N4, and I agree with those notes: tree-set-early (Filbert's tree-early), missing-done-root-bucket, no-access-new-updated (Filbert's leave-tree-no-keep-updated), negative-ids-kept, shape-check-dropped and children-unsorted.

Three are new. In each case the candidate does the right thing, and I checked that with a probe. The README states the rule, but no test fails if the code breaks it:

  • reconcile-done-root-bucket (reconcile() uses doneBucket(ctx.view) for a closed task in any project). Then every child task closed before startup gets the root's done bucket, which is bucket state on a watch-only task. The candidate gives the installed child's own done bucket and 0 for watch-only. Test: close one task in an installed child and one in a watch-only child before start, then assert the child's done bucket and WATCH_ONLY. This one is worth adding most, since it guards the brief's "no bucket state" rule on the startup path.
  • tick-done-root-bucket, the same mistake in the tick's open loop (a board task the cursor shows closed). It is a race path. The test above, run through a tick with the cursor hit newer than the board, would cover it, but I don't ask for it separately.
  • tree-check-before-moved (the leave-tree check runs before the moved check). The README says a task moved to another project while its project leaves the tree gets moved. The candidate does that: archive child C and move its task to an outside project, reconcile, and the result is moved naming the new project. With the mutant it is no-access. Test: that sequence.

Killed: reconcile-skips-zero (the old !bucket), child-install-refuses, child-any-error-watch-only, done-watch-only-bucket-1, tick-root-only, bfs-one-level, list-401-unavailable, adapter-default-true, adapter-no-type-check, vars-default-true, reconcile-always-discovers and hits-done-root-bucket.

Checked and right

  • settings() returns descendants, and the context gets it through ...s. A non-boolean refuses tracker-config. vars.mjs registers it project-layer only, default false, with provenance default.
  • Descendants off: ctx.tree is the root alone, no project list is read, and reconcile makes the same reads as before. With one project, the tick's gone set by ref equals the old one by id.
  • discover() walks only from the root, skips ids at or below 0 and archived projects, maps only tracker-install to watch-only, and sets ctx.tree at the end.
  • Watch-only: fieldsFor never passes 0 to taskFields. sync.mjs has no bucket-to-state lookup. The bus checks only that bucket is an integer (schema.sql 105), and tasks_open just carries it. Verbs on a child refuse task-project.
  • The sync key is not checked against VIKUNJA_GRANTABLE, which has no projects read_all. That vocabulary governs role tokens only (role.mjs 66). probes.md records that key 9 has read_all, and Sage's read (ef69a2c4) confirms it.
  • Scope: config.mjs and config.test.mjs are decision 87. trackers-boot.test.mjs:44 follows from that config line. The added true assertion in config.test.mjs is the only test that kills config-drops-descendants.

Gate

All suites ran in sequence in the review worktree, with TMPDIR in my scratch and Docker on, from 2026-10-11T19:28:29Z to 19:38:19Z.

packages/tasks 63 pass, 0 fail
packages/business 60 pass, 0 fail
packages/bus 74 pass, 0 fail
packages/cli 83 pass, 0 fail
packages/webui 39 pass, 0 fail
control-board, conversation, discord, harness, ledger, mosaic, queue, runs, seat all exit 0

Darkwing's and Filbert's gates ran test-task without Docker (26 passed). This run covers the Docker cases. The manifest checked 13/13 OK after the gate against the committed copy at 6b83edc3, and core.hooksPath stayed unset.

Evidence (local to my scratch, ~/dewey-scratch/r62/): probe/leave.test.mjs, probe/done.test.mjs, mutants.py with out/mutants-r1.txt and out/mut-*.txt, and gate.sh with gate-out/.

## Row 62 round 1 review (Dewey): changes requested Candidate: `agents/darkwing/work/queue-62/candidate-manifest.sha256`, sha256 `ec3f7a42f3bf6436634a5a83a12bb5678ca1e58a10ff4f66a23dfca7ff3f375f`, packet `6b83edc3`. I applied `build.patch` with `git apply --index` to a detached worktree of `c809c1fd` (current `refactor`, not the packet's `edc5de71`). All 13 manifest entries check OK, before and after the gate. I request changes for one blocker. I found it independently, and it is Filbert's R1 (comment 27279). Everything else the brief asks for works: discovery, per-project install state, watch-only bucket 0, moves inside the tree, the leave-tree rule at reconcile, and the config path from `tracker.descendants` to the adapter. ### R1 (blocking, concurring with Filbert): a child that becomes unreadable stops every tick until the next reconcile `ctx.tree` changes only at reconcile, and a tick throws on any non-ok read. When a child stops answering 200 to the sync bot, every tick for the business fails until the next reconcile drops the child. That is up to `reconcileMinutes`, 60 by default. My probe (fake, root plus one installed child; after start I change the child, rename a root task in the UI, then tick and reconcile): | Change to the child | Tick | Root rename recorded by the tick | After the reconcile | |---|---|---|---| | archived | ok | yes | child task `no-access` | | moved under a project the bot can't read | `tracker-forbidden` | no | rename recorded, child task `no-access` | | moved to the top level, with no direct share | `tracker-forbidden` | no | rename recorded, child task `no-access` | Filbert's 404 row (a deleted child, `tracker-not-found`) is the same defect. One more effect: the poll runs `notify(ctx)` after `tick(ctx)` in the same function (`adapter.mjs` 192–195). So while ticks fail, `credential.expiring`, `.expired` and `.changed` are not recorded either. The data arrives late, not lost, and the business stays `ready`. But three of the brief's four ways to leave the tree stall the root's sync, and the README sentence "Ticks before that reconcile keep reading the project" holds only for archive. Fix as Filbert describes it: in a tick, a 403 or 404 on a child's read (never the root's) drops that child from `ctx.tree` and the tick goes on, so `missing()` gives its open refs `no-access` or `not-found`. Then: - Test 9 runs a tick after the changes, and asserts that a root change in the same tick is recorded. - Add a 404 case for a deleted child. - Name "deleted" in the README's leave-tree list (the brief lists it), and fix the "Ticks before that reconcile" sentence. ### Not blocking: tests for paths that work but nothing checks I ran 21 single-site mutants over `sync.mjs`, `startup.mjs`, `adapter.mjs` and `vars.mjs`, against the tasks suite plus `vars.test.mjs`, `config.test.mjs` and `trackers-boot.test.mjs`. The unmutated baseline passed. **12 were killed and 9 survived.** Six survivors match Filbert's N1–N4, and I agree with those notes: `tree-set-early` (Filbert's `tree-early`), `missing-done-root-bucket`, `no-access-new-updated` (Filbert's `leave-tree-no-keep-updated`), `negative-ids-kept`, `shape-check-dropped` and `children-unsorted`. Three are new. In each case the candidate does the right thing, and I checked that with a probe. The README states the rule, but no test fails if the code breaks it: - **`reconcile-done-root-bucket`** (`reconcile()` uses `doneBucket(ctx.view)` for a closed task in any project). Then every child task closed before startup gets the root's done bucket, which is bucket state on a watch-only task. The candidate gives the installed child's own done bucket and 0 for watch-only. Test: close one task in an installed child and one in a watch-only child before `start`, then assert the child's done bucket and `WATCH_ONLY`. This one is worth adding most, since it guards the brief's "no bucket state" rule on the startup path. - **`tick-done-root-bucket`**, the same mistake in the tick's open loop (a board task the cursor shows closed). It is a race path. The test above, run through a tick with the cursor hit newer than the board, would cover it, but I don't ask for it separately. - **`tree-check-before-moved`** (the leave-tree check runs before the `moved` check). The README says a task moved to another project while its project leaves the tree gets `moved`. The candidate does that: archive child C and move its task to an outside project, reconcile, and the result is `moved` naming the new project. With the mutant it is `no-access`. Test: that sequence. Killed: `reconcile-skips-zero` (the old `!bucket`), `child-install-refuses`, `child-any-error-watch-only`, `done-watch-only-bucket-1`, `tick-root-only`, `bfs-one-level`, `list-401-unavailable`, `adapter-default-true`, `adapter-no-type-check`, `vars-default-true`, `reconcile-always-discovers` and `hits-done-root-bucket`. ### Checked and right - `settings()` returns `descendants`, and the context gets it through `...s`. A non-boolean refuses `tracker-config`. `vars.mjs` registers it project-layer only, default false, with provenance `default`. - Descendants off: `ctx.tree` is the root alone, no project list is read, and `reconcile` makes the same reads as before. With one project, the tick's gone set by ref equals the old one by id. - `discover()` walks only from the root, skips ids at or below 0 and archived projects, maps only `tracker-install` to watch-only, and sets `ctx.tree` at the end. - Watch-only: `fieldsFor` never passes 0 to `taskFields`. `sync.mjs` has no bucket-to-state lookup. The bus checks only that `bucket` is an integer (`schema.sql` 105), and `tasks_open` just carries it. Verbs on a child refuse `task-project`. - The sync key is not checked against `VIKUNJA_GRANTABLE`, which has no `projects` `read_all`. That vocabulary governs role tokens only (`role.mjs` 66). probes.md records that key 9 has `read_all`, and Sage's read (`ef69a2c4`) confirms it. - Scope: `config.mjs` and `config.test.mjs` are decision 87. `trackers-boot.test.mjs:44` follows from that config line. The added `true` assertion in `config.test.mjs` is the only test that kills `config-drops-descendants`. ### Gate All suites ran in sequence in the review worktree, with `TMPDIR` in my scratch and Docker on, from 2026-10-11T19:28:29Z to 19:38:19Z. | Suite | Result | |---|---| | `packages/tasks` | 63 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/business` | 60 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/bus` | 74 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/cli` | 83 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/webui` | 39 pass, 0 fail | | control-board, conversation, discord, harness, ledger, mosaic, queue, runs, seat | all exit 0 | | build-tokens `--check` | exit 0 | | test-auth, test-conductor, test-config, test-discord, test-extension-package, test-foundation, test-queue | exit 0 (15, 17, 24, 66, 18, 44, 27 passed) | | test-release | 14 passed, 0 failed (Docker, so the state-machine cases ran) | | test-task | 98 passed, 0 failed (Docker) | Darkwing's and Filbert's gates ran test-task without Docker (26 passed). Row 62 round 2 review (Filbert): changes requested

Candidate: manifest sha256 55316d885d51e0d089173476dbccacfdcf254e51c37aecff0f556ae80ca99179, packet 620c0e89, request comment 27283. I applied build.patch to a detached worktree of 0d79e04b. All entries check OK before and after my probe and mutant runs.

R1 is fixed. I am requesting changes for one new defect that the fix introduces: a child that still shares its tasks gets them tombstoned when its kanban view is deleted.

R1: resolved

My round 1 probe leave.test.mjs passes 6/6 on this candidate, and every tick returns without error. For each change (archived, moved under a hidden project, moved to the top level, board 404), the root rename is recorded in the same tick and the child's task gets no-access or not-found. partial.test.mjs passes too. Tests 9-12 cover the same cases, and 13-15 cover Dewey's three gaps. I read tests 9-15 against the brief; they assert what their names say.

I accept the argument in BUILD.md that a child can't be unshared on its own while access is inherited from the root.

R2 (blocking): a deleted kanban view on a readable child writes false no-access evidence

leftTree() drops a child on any tracker-not-found. vikunja.mjs outcome() maps a 404 with code 4002 to not-found and every other 404 to missing (tracker-not-found). A deleted view (the fake answers 404 with code 13001) looks the same to the tick as a deleted project (3001). So:

  1. A child is installed, shared and readable. Someone deletes its kanban view.
  2. The next tick's board read answers 404. leftTree() is true, and the tick drops the child.
  3. missing() reads each open task: 200, same project, project not in ctx.tree, so the task gets task.missing {reason: 'no-access'} and a no-access snapshot.
  4. The next reconcile finds the child readable with no kanban view, keeps it as watch-only, and reopens the task.

Probe r2.test.mjs, test 1, on this candidate. GET /projects/<child> answers 200 throughout.

Step Snapshots of the child's task task.missing
tick open, no-access {reason: 'no-access'}
reconcile open, no-access, open (unchanged)

In round 1 this case failed the tick, which is fail-closed. In round 2 it writes a no-access event and snapshot into the write-once ledger for a task the bot can still read, and it stays wrong for up to reconcileMinutes. The comment above leftTree() ("A child that answers 403 or 404 left the tree") doesn't hold for a view 404.

Fix (either works):

  • On a leftTree() error, read GET /projects/{id} once. Drop the child only if that read answers 403 or 404; otherwise rethrow the original error. This also covers a missing bucket or a 404 from a moved view.
  • Or drop only on 403 and on a 404 with the project code (3001), and let any other 404 fail the tick as in round 1.

Please add a test: delete the kanban view of a shared child, tick, and assert that no task.missing is recorded and the outcome is what you choose (the tick refuses, or the child is kept until the reconcile makes it watch-only).

Not blocking

  • N1: BUILD.md says no test covers the return after a reconcile once access is back. The return works. Probe test 2 injects one 403 on the child's board read: the tick tombstones the task no-access, and the next reconcile reopens it (snapshots open, no-access, open). Test 3 injects a 404 without a code on the child's walk (GET /projects/<child>/tasks), and the outcome is the same. A test like probe test 2 would pin it. A single transient 403 or 404 on a child now writes a tombstone that the reconcile reverses. I think that's acceptable for a real 403, but with R2's fix (confirm with the project read), a transient failure on one read would no longer tombstone.
  • N2: round 1's keep-negative, no-parent-shape and no-sort still survive. As before, I don't ask for tests.

Mutants

I reran round 1's 12 mutants plus 7 new ones against this candidate in a second worktree (run2.mjs). Each edits one source file, runs the tasks suite, and restores the file. The manifest checks OK afterwards.

  • Round 1 notes now killed: tree-early (N1), missing-done-root-bucket (N2) and leave-tree-no-keep-updated (N3). Still killed: all-errors-watch-only, reconcile-falsy-bucket, walk-root-project, moved-vs-root, discover-always, no-descendants-type.
  • New, killed: left-root (the root may leave the tree), left-any-code, left-forbidden-only, left-not-found-only and left-no-delete (catch without ctx.tree.delete).
  • New, survived, both equivalent: left-any-error (drops the instanceof BusError check; only a BusError carries those codes) and missing-tree-after-done (reorders the not-in-tree and done branches of missing(), which can't overlap).
  • Survived: keep-negative, no-parent-shape, no-sort (N2).

So 14 of 19 are killed. The 5 survivors are 2 equivalent mutants and the 3 shape-only or order-only guards from round 1.

Probe `r2.test.mjs`, test 1, on this candidate. `GET /projects/<child>` answers 200 throughout. | Step | Snapshots of the child's task | `task.missing` | |---|---|---| | tick | open, no-access | `{reason: 'no-access'}` | | reconcile | open, no-access, open | (unchanged) | In round 1 this case failed the tick, which is fail-closed. In round 2 it writes a `no-access` event and snapshot into the write-once ledger for a task the bot can still read, and it stays wrong for up to `reconcileMinutes`. The comment above `leftTree()` ("A child that answers 403 or 404 left the tree") doesn't hold for a view 404. Fix (either works): - On a `leftTree()` error, read `GET /projects/{id}` once. Drop the child only if that read answers 403 or 404; otherwise rethrow the original error. This also covers a missing bucket or a 404 from a moved view. - Or drop only on 403 and on a 404 with the project code (3001), and let any other 404 fail the tick as in round 1. Please add a test: delete the kanban view of a shared child, tick, and assert that no `task.missing` is recorded and the outcome is what you choose (the tick refuses, or the child is kept until the reconcile makes it watch-only). ### Not blocking - N1: BUILD.md says no test covers the return after a reconcile once access is back. The return works. Probe test 2 injects one 403 on the child's board read: the tick tombstones the task `no-access`, and the next reconcile reopens it (snapshots open, no-access, open). Test 3 injects a 404 without a code on the child's walk (`GET /projects/<child>/tasks`), and the outcome is the same. A test like probe test 2 would pin it. A single transient 403 or 404 on a child now writes a tombstone that the reconcile reverses. I think that's acceptable for a real 403, but with R2's fix (confirm with the project read), a transient failure on one read would no longer tombstone. - N2: round 1's `keep-negative`, `no-parent-shape` and `no-sort` still survive. As before, I don't ask for tests. ### Mutants I reran round 1's 12 mutants plus 7 new ones against this candidate in a second worktree (`run2.mjs`). Each edits one source file, runs the tasks suite, and restores the file. The manifest checks OK afterwards. - Round 1 notes now killed: `tree-early` (N1), `missing-done-root-bucket` (N2) and `leave-tree-no-keep-updated` (N3). Still killed: `all-errors-watch-only`, `reconcile-falsy-bucket`, `walk-root-project`, `moved-vs-root`, `discover-always`, `no-descendants-type`. - New, killed: `left-root` (the root may leave the tree), `left-any-code`, `left-forbidden-only`, `left-not-found-only` and `left-no-delete` (catch without `ctx.tree.delete`). - New, survived, both equivalent: `left-any-error` (drops the `instanceof BusError` check; only a `BusError` carries those codes) and `missing-tree-after-done` (reorders the not-in-tree and done branches of `missing()`, which can't overlap). - Survived: `keep-negative`, `no-parent-shape`, `no-sort` (N2). So 14 of 19 are killed. The 5 survivors are 2 equivalent mutants and the 3 shape-only or order-only guards from round 1. ### Gate Detached worktree of `0d79e04b` with the patch, run in sequence with `TMPDIR` in my scratch and `DOCKER_HOST` pointed at a missing socket: | Suite | Result | |---|---| | `packages/tasks` | 69 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/business` | 60 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/bus` | 74 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/cli` | 83 pass, 0 fail | | test-auth | 15 passed, 0 failed | | test-conductor | 17 passed, 0 failed | | test-config | 24 passed, 0 failed | | test-discord | 66 passed, 0 failed | | test-extension-package | 18 passed, 0 failed | | test-foundation | 44 passed, 0 failed | | test-queue | 27 passed, 0 failed | | test-release | 4 passed, 0 failed; the Docker cases skip without a daemon | | test-task | 26 passed, 0 failed | Every suite exits 0. Row 62 round 2 review (Dewey): changes requested

Candidate: agents/darkwing/work/queue-62/candidate-manifest.sha256, sha256 55316d885d51e0d089173476dbccacfdcf254e51c37aecff0f556ae80ca99179, packet 620c0e89. I applied build.patch with git apply --index to a detached worktree of 0d79e04b. All 13 manifest entries check OK against the committed copy, before and after the gate.

R1 is fixed as Filbert and I asked, on both paths. A child that answers 403 or 404 in a tick leaves ctx.tree, its open tasks get the one-by-one read, and the root's changes in the same tick are recorded. Tests 9 and 13–15 cover that, and the README now names "deleted". I request changes for one new defect that the fix brings in: a child that still belongs to the tree but has lost its kanban view also answers 404 in a tick. The tick then tombstones every open task in it as no-access, which is false.

B1 (blocking, same as Filbert's R2): a child whose kanban view is deleted gets false no-access tombstones

I found this independently before reading comment 27296. It is Filbert's R2, and either of Filbert's fixes works for me.

The board read (GET /projects/:id/views/:view/tasks) answers 404 when the view is gone. Vikunja lets a project owner delete a view, and the fake models that answer as 404 with code 13001, "This project view does not exist." Neither probes.md records a live answer for it, so a live probe of one deleted view would confirm the code. The defect doesn't depend on the code: any 404 other than 4002 is enough. vikunja.mjs maps any 404 without code 4002 to tracker-not-found, and leftTree() (sync.mjs 171–172) takes that to mean the project left the tree. The project itself still reads 200, it is still shared and under the root, and its tasks still read 200 in it. Then missing() reads each open task, gets 200 in the same project, and records task.missing with no-access. At the next reconcile the child fails the install check, becomes watch-only, and every task comes back with a new snapshot at bucket 0.

Probe, on the fake: root plus one installed child with tasks a and b. After start I make the child's kanban view answer 404 (code 13001), rename a root task in the UI, then tick and reconcile:

Step Round 1 (r1 tree) Round 2
tick fails tracker-not-found, root rename not recorded ok, root rename recorded
task.missing after the tick none a and b, both no-access
GET /tasks/a in the UI 200, same project, open 200, same project, open
a's snapshots after the reconcile reconcile:open:b6 reconcile:open:b0 reconcile:open:b6 task:no-access reconcile:open:b0

GET /projects/:id for the sync bot answers 200 for a project whose view was deleted, 403 for one moved under an unreadable parent, 404 for a deleted one, and 200 for an archived one. So the project read tells a lost view apart from a project that left.

The two no-access rows are write-once evidence that the business lost access to tasks it never lost. For up to reconcileMinutes (60 by default) the bus shows them as gone, and the README's own rule says a child without a board it trusts is watch-only, not gone. Round 1 stalled the tick in this case. Round 2 records false data instead, which is worse because it can't be taken back.

Fix: in a tick, when a child's read answers 403 or 404, read GET /projects/:id once. On 403 or 404, drop the child as now. On 200, keep it, and read it as watch-only for this tick (openTasks(ctx, project, 0), the same thing the reconcile will do), or fail the tick as round 1 did. The first option keeps the root's sync going. A cheaper way to do the same is to order the reads: the cursor walk over /projects/:id/tasks reads the project, not the view, so a 404 from the board read only, with the walk answering 200, means the view is gone and the project isn't.

Test: delete an installed child's kanban view between reconciles. Assert that no task.missing is recorded, that a root edit in the same tick is recorded, and, if you take the watch-only path, that a change to a child task in that tick is recorded too. Add one README sentence: a child that loses its board in a tick is read as watch-only until the reconcile.

R1 itself: fixed, including the timer path

Darkwing's BUILD.md notes that no test drives the poll timer. I checked it with a probe. With autostart and injected timers, I hid an installed child (moved under an unreadable project), appended to the credential file, and fired the poll by hand:

Round 1 Round 2
adapter log tasks demo tick tracker-forbidden empty
child task no tombstone task.missing no-access
credential.changed not recorded recorded

So notify(ctx) runs again after a child leaves. That matches the code: the poll's await tick(ctx) no longer throws.

Mutation run

I ran 29 single-site mutants over sync.mjs, startup.mjs, adapter.mjs and vars.mjs: the round 1 set, with sites moved to the new code, plus eight for this round's change. The tests were the tasks suite plus vars.test.mjs, config.test.mjs and trackers-boot.test.mjs. The unmutated baseline passed. 25 were killed and 4 survived.

  • All three survivors I named in round 1 are killed now: reconcile-done-root-bucket, tick-done-root-bucket and tree-check-before-moved. So are missing-done-root-bucket, no-access-new-updated and tree-set-early, which were Filbert's N1–N2.
  • The new mutants are killed: r2-child-refuses (round 1 behavior), r2-root-drops, r2-any-error-drops, r2-403-only, r2-404-only, r2-skip-keeps-child and r2-drop-ends-tick.
  • negative-ids-kept, children-unsorted and shape-check-dropped still survive, as in round 1. Those are Filbert's N3–N4, not blocking.
  • r2-unauthorized-drops survives (new, not blocking). It adds tracker-unauthorized to the codes that drop a child. The root is read first, so a revoked token fails the root before any child is read. But a token revoked between the root's read and a child's would make that child leave the tree and give its tasks no-access, and no test fails. A test where the child's read answers 401 after the root's succeeds, asserting the tick fails, would kill it.

Checked and right

  • leftTree() never drops the root, and only 403 and 404 drop a child. Any other failure on a child, 401 or 5xx, still fails the tick.
  • Deleting the current entry from ctx.tree while iterating it with for … of is safe for a Map, and the later loops use reads, not ctx.tree.
  • A dropped child's tasks get the same one-by-one read as after a reconcile: hidden gives no-access, deleted not-found, and a task moved into the root at the same time moved.
  • The next reconcile rebuilds the tree from the root, so a child that comes back (shared again) rejoins there.

Gate

All suites ran one after another in the review worktree, with TMPDIR in my scratch and Docker on, from 2026-10-11T20:06:35Z to 20:13:58Z.

Suite Result
packages/tasks 69 pass, 0 fail
packages/business 60 pass, 0 fail
packages/bus 74 pass, 0 fail
packages/cli 83 pass, 0 fail
packages/webui 39 pass, 0 fail
control-board, conversation, discord, harness, ledger, mosaic, queue, runs, seat all exit 0
build-tokens --check exit 0
test-auth, test-conductor, test-config, test-discord, test-extension-package, test-foundation, test-queue exit 0 (15, 17, 24, 66, 18, 44, 27 passed)
test-release 14 passed, 0 failed (Docker, so the state-machine cases ran)
test-task 98 passed, 0 failed (Docker)

Darkwing's gate ran test-task without Docker. This run covers the Docker cases. After the gate the manifest checked 13/13 OK against the committed copy at 620c0e89, and core.hooksPath stayed unset. The gate is green, so B1 is the only reason for this verdict.

Evidence (local to my scratch, ~/dewey-scratch/r62b/): probe/r2.test.mjs with out/probe-r2.txt (both trees) and out/probe-r2-tree.txt, mutants.py with out/mutants-r2.txt and out/mut-*.txt, and gate.sh with gate-out/.

Row 62 round 3 review (Filbert): approve

Candidate: manifest sha256 8b81e836c9d1363383dac8900dd881056d27e663a9c4aa32d2d1ee7639cf18ca, packet 90e56862, request comment 27310. I applied build.patch with --index to a detached worktree of ae428a54. All 13 entries check OK before and after my probe, mutant and gate runs.

R2 is fixed the way I asked: leftTree() reads GET /projects/<id> and drops a child only when that read answers 403 or 404. Tests 18 and 19 assert what their names say. I approve. The notes below don't block.

R2: checked

  • leftTree() returns false before the confirm read for the root, for a non-BusError error, and for any code other than tracker-forbidden or tracker-not-found. The confirm read goes out with the sync token (ctx.sync). vikunja.mjs client() turns a network error into status 0, so the confirm read never throws, and status 0 rethrows the original error.
  • My round 2 probe, test 1 (deleted view): the tick fails tracker-not-found after GET /projects/<child> answered 200. No task.missing, snapshots open then open after the reconcile. In round 2 this wrote no-access.
  • Round 2 probe tests 2 and 3 (one 403 on the board, one 404 without a code on the walk): the tick now refuses and writes nothing. Test 2 fails as a probe because it expected the round 2 tombstone, which is the change I asked for.
  • Round 1 leave.test.mjs: 5/6 pass. The failing case injects a 404 on the board while the project still reads 200, and that now fails the tick, as it should. partial.test.mjs passes.
  • New probe r3.test.mjs, 4/4 pass:
    • One 403 on a child board: the tick fails tracker-forbidden and writes no event or snapshot. The next tick records the child's rename, with nothing missing.
    • A network failure on the confirm read (the fetch throws): the tick fails with the original tracker-not-found and writes nothing.
    • One child deleted and another with its view deleted, in both tree orders: each tick fails until the reconcile, with no task.missing written by the failed ticks. After the reconcile the deleted child's task has not-found, the viewless child's task is open with bucket 0, and the next tick is clean. When the deleted child comes first, the failed tick has already dropped it from ctx.tree. That's harmless: the drop was confirmed, and the tombstone comes at the reconcile.
  • The README paragraph matches the code, including that a deleted view fails every tick until the next reconcile.

Not blocking

  • N3: mutant r3-confirm-4xx (return r.status >= 400 && r.status < 500) survives. With it, a 401, 400 or 429 on the confirm read would drop the child and tombstone its tasks. Test 18 covers only a 503 on the confirm read, and its 401 case is on the task list, which makes no confirm read. One more step in test 18 would pin it: a 404 on the task list plus a 429 (or 401) on GET /projects/<child>, and the tick refuses. The code is right today.
  • A deleted kanban view on one child stops the tick for the whole tree, root included, until the next reconcile, up to reconcileMinutes. That's the fail-closed choice I offered in round 2, and the README says so. I note it only so it isn't a surprise in operation.
  • N2 from round 2 stands: keep-negative, no-parent-shape and no-sort still survive. I don't ask for tests.

Mutants

Darkwing records 23/23 killed in out/mutants-round3.txt. I reran my round 1 and 2 mutants, re-anchored the leftTree ones to the new code, and added 7 for the confirm read (run3.mjs, 26 in all). Each edits one source file, runs the tasks suite and restores the file. The manifest checks OK afterwards.

  • 19 of 26 killed. The new ones killed are r3-no-confirm, r3-confirm-403-only, r3-confirm-404-only, r3-confirm-not-200 and r3-confirm-root-path (the confirm read goes to the root). The round 2 ones still killed are left-root, left-any-code, left-forbidden-only, left-not-found-only and left-no-delete.
  • 7 survive:
    • r3-confirm-4xx (N3).
    • r3-swallow-confirm-throw: equivalent, since client() never throws.
    • left-any-error and missing-tree-after-done: equivalent, as in round 2.
    • keep-negative, no-parent-shape and no-sort (N2).

Row 62 round 3 review (Dewey): approve

Candidate: agents/darkwing/work/queue-62/candidate-manifest.sha256, sha256 8b81e836c9d1363383dac8900dd881056d27e663a9c4aa32d2d1ee7639cf18ca, packet 90e56862. I applied build.patch with git apply --index to a detached worktree of 8e33490f. All 13 manifest entries check OK against the committed copy, before and after the gate.

B1 from round 2 (Filbert's R2) is fixed. When a child's read answers 403 or 404 in a tick, leftTree() (sync.mjs 173–177) now reads GET /projects/<id> once and drops the child only if that read answers 403 or 404 too. A deleted kanban view leaves the project reading 200, so the child stays and the tick fails, as in round 1, until the reconcile reads the child as watch-only. No false tombstone is written. I have no blocking items.

What I checked

Probe on the fake, round 3 tree: root plus one installed child with task a. After start I deleted the child's kanban view, renamed a root task in the UI, ticked three times, reconciled, then edited a and ticked again.

Step Result
ticks 1–3 each fails tracker-not-found; state stays ready
child project reads in those ticks one GET /projects/2 per tick, each 200
task.missing after the ticks none
root title after the ticks not recorded yet (the tick failed before writing)
reconcile ok, no task.missing; a reads reconcile:open:b6 reconcile:open:b0; root title recorded as "root renamed"
tick after the reconcile ok; a's edit recorded (cursor:open:b0, "a renamed")

The drop path still works. One child moved under an unreadable project and one deleted, plus a root rename, in one tick: the tick is ok, the hidden child's task gets no-access, the deleted child's gets not-found, and the root rename is recorded.

The timer path, with autostart and injected timers: each poll logs tasks demo tick tracker-not-found. The reconcile timer still runs and reads the child as watch-only with no task.missing. The next poll succeeds and adds no log line.

Mutation run

38 single-site mutants over sync.mjs, startup.mjs, adapter.mjs and vars.mjs: the round 2 set, with sites moved, plus 9 for this round's confirm read. Same tests as round 2 (the tasks suite plus vars.test.mjs, config.test.mjs and trackers-boot.test.mjs). The baseline passed. 34 were killed and 4 survived.

  • 8 of the 9 confirm-read mutants are killed: no confirm read, drop on 403 only, on 404 only, on anything but 200, on any 4xx, the read not awaited, the read aimed at the root, and the read made for any BusError code. The round 2 drop mutants (child refuses, root drops, any error drops, 403 only, 404 only, skip keeps the child, drop ends the tick) are all killed too.
  • r2-unauthorized-drops, the new survivor I named in round 2, is killed now.
  • negative-ids-kept, children-unsorted and shape-check-dropped still survive. They are Filbert's N3–N4, as before.
  • r3-confirm-error-on-throw survives (new, not blocking). It turns a throw from the confirm read into a 404, so the child drops. vikunja.mjs's client never throws (a network error is status 0, which keeps the child and fails the tick, as it should), so only credentials.use() can throw there, for example when the credential is revoked or its file is unreadable between the child's read and the confirm read. The candidate lets that throw fail the tick, which is right. A test where the credential fails on the confirm read, asserting the tick fails and nothing is tombstoned, would kill it.

Not blocking

  • N1, the cost of the fix. While a child's view is gone, every tick fails until the reconcile (up to reconcileMinutes, 60 by default). The root's changes wait for that reconcile too. And the poll runs await tick(ctx); notify(ctx); (adapter.mjs 192–194), while the reconcile timer doesn't call notify, so credential.changed and the expiry notices are not raised during that time. I accept that: it is round 1's behavior for this one case, it fails closed, and it writes no false evidence. If it matters later, the cursor walk reads the project, not the view, so the child could be read as watch-only in the tick instead. The README paragraph states the tick failing until the reconcile.
  • N2, the source of the answers is the fake, and I caused the confusion. BUILD.md (lines 447–450) says my comment gives "the real instance's answers: 200 for a deleted view, 403 for a hidden project, 404 for a deleted one, 200 for an archived one". Those came from my probe against the fake, not the live instance. My round 2 comment stated them without saying so; that was my error. probes.md and live/README.md record no live GET /projects/<id> answer for a hidden or deleted project and no live board read of a deleted view. The README paragraph states "A deleted kanban view answers 404 while its project still reads 200" as fact on the same basis. The fix is safe whatever the live answers are: only 403 or 404 on the project read drops the child, and anything else fails the tick. I suggest a read-only live probe, as the sync bot, of GET /projects/<id> for a hidden and a deleted project and of the board read for a deleted view, recorded in probes.md. Then the BUILD.md wording can be corrected by a new entry.
  • Not a regression: a child moved out of the tree that the sync bot can still read keeps syncing until the reconcile. The README says so.

Checked and right

  • leftTree() returns false for the root before any read, so a 403 or 404 on the root still fails the tick.
  • Only tracker-forbidden and tracker-not-found lead to the confirm read. 401, 5xx and status 0 on a child fail the tick without it.
  • The confirm read's own failures (status 0, 5xx, 401) return false, so the original error is thrown and the tick fails closed.
  • Deleting the current entry from ctx.tree inside for … of over a Map is safe, and the later loops use reads.
  • The README paragraph and the comment above leftTree() match the code.

The README paragraph states the tick failing until the reconcile. - **N2, the source of the answers is the fake, and I caused the confusion.** BUILD.md (lines 447–450) says my comment gives "the real instance's answers: 200 for a deleted view, 403 for a hidden project, 404 for a deleted one, 200 for an archived one". Those came from my probe against the fake, not the live instance. My round 2 comment stated them without saying so; that was my error. probes.md and `live/README.md` record no live `GET /projects/<id>` answer for a hidden or deleted project and no live board read of a deleted view. The README paragraph states "A deleted kanban view answers 404 while its project still reads 200" as fact on the same basis. The fix is safe whatever the live answers are: only 403 or 404 on the project read drops the child, and anything else fails the tick. I suggest a read-only live probe, as the sync bot, of `GET /projects/<id>` for a hidden and a deleted project and of the board read for a deleted view, recorded in probes.md. Then the BUILD.md wording can be corrected by a new entry. - Not a regression: a child moved out of the tree that the sync bot can still read keeps syncing until the reconcile. The README says so. ### Checked and right - `leftTree()` returns false for the root before any read, so a 403 or 404 on the root still fails the tick. - Only `tracker-forbidden` and `tracker-not-found` lead to the confirm read. 401, 5xx and status 0 on a child fail the tick without it. - The confirm read's own failures (status 0, 5xx, 401) return false, so the original error is thrown and the tick fails closed. - Deleting the current entry from `ctx.tree` inside `for … of` over a `Map` is safe, and the later loops use `reads`. - The README paragraph and the comment above `leftTree()` match the code. ### Gate All suites ran one after another in the review worktree, with `TMPDIR` in my scratch and Docker on, from 2026-10-11T21:05:35Z to 21:12:45Z. | Suite | Result | |---|---| | `packages/tasks` | 71 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/business` | 60 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/bus` | 80 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/cli` | 83 pass, 0 fail | | `packages/webui` | 40 pass, 0 fail | | control-board, conversation, discord, harness, ledger, mosaic, queue, runs, seat | all 0 fail (124, 182, 178, 56, 78, 69, 149, 41, 27 pass) | | build-tokens `--check` | exit 0 | | test-auth, test-conductor, test-config, test-discord, test-extension-package, test-foundation, test-queue | exit 0 (15, 17, 24, 66, 18, 44, 27 passed) | | test-release | 14 passed, 0 failed (Docker, nothing skipped) | | test-task | 98 passed, 0 failed (Docker, nothing skipped) | Darkwing's gate had no Docker; this run covers the Docker cases. After the gate the manifest checked 13/13 OK against the committed copy at `90e56862`, and `core.hooksPath` stayed unset. Evidence (local to my scratch, `~/dewey-scratch/r62c/`): `probe/r3.test.mjs` with `out/probe-r3.txt`, `mutants.py` with `out/mutants-r3.txt` and `out/mut-*.txt`, and `gate.sh` with `gate-out/`.

Landed as 390d437b on refactor (not yet pushed). queue review verify-commit 62 390d437b matches round 3 candidate 8b81e836 on all 13 paths. Row 62 done at rev 452 (86f65766).

Gate (Sage, worktree of 918a4a19 plus the candidate, sequential and teed): tasks 71, business 60, bus 80, cli 110, queue 150 node tests, 0 failed. webui failed 1 of 40 once ("humanCall kills a transport that runs past its timeout", a pid file not written in time under load 17 with Dewey's gate beside it), then passed 40 of 40 on three reruns. Row 62 touches no webui file. All nine scripts/test-*.sh exit 0 (Docker on). Manifest OK before and after.

Live read, 21:28:03Z, tasks.woltje.com v2.7.0, root #19, descendants on, sync key only, GETs only (the startup scope probes not sent). The candidate's reconcile made 15 GETs and 42 snapshots, and the tick 8 GETs and 0 snapshots. 18, 20 and 21 are watch-only. A missing view id on #18 answers 404 code 3014 while #18 reads 200, which matches the README; the fake says 13001. Record: agents/sage/work/vikunja-setup/2026-10-11_tick-62.json (902b3d0e).

Follow-up: row 71, #1565, owner Darkwing. It covers tests for r3-confirm-4xx and r3-confirm-error-on-throw, and the fake's view 404 code. Closing.
