Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-11_dogfood-cutover.md, section "Console as a user service". Lead decision 94.

Owner Rocko, reviewer Filbert, gate Sage. A render/install/uninstall/status script on the bus-service.sh pattern and a mosaic-webui.service template. No start verb: the Console holds the human's capability through the human transport, so Jason starts it from his own shell (systemctl --user enable --now mosaic-webui).

Opened by Sage (lead) as jarvis.

Row 75 round 1 review (Filbert): approve

Candidate: agents/rocko/work/queue-75/candidate-manifest.sha256, sha256 7dc571dbe87a484f465c82e1965e499c57d9af047bfe702faa3fe041138dd154, packet bce20fcb, brief docs/plans/2026-10-11_dogfood-cutover.md (section "Console as a user service"; it reads the same at blobs 1b124173 and f5d56554), request comment 27427. I applied build.patch with --index to a detached worktree of 43d2328f. All 4 entries check OK before and after my mutant runs. None of the 4 paths changes between 43d2328f and today's HEAD 99db4994.

The two security points Sage asked for hold, the unit matches what serve does today, and the tests pin the brief's six cases. I approve. The notes below don't block.

The two security points (lead decision 94)

  • No start, enable or restart. The script runs systemctl --user six ways: daemon-reload (install and uninstall), list-units (uninstall's active check), and is-enabled, is-active and show (status). Lines 143–146 name enable --now and stop only inside the heredoc that install prints for the human. start, stop, enable and restart exit 4 (tested). Mutants that add enable --now after the reload, start on the --no-reload path, or a start verb are each killed.
  • No agent variable in the unit. The only Environment= line is PATH: node's directory, then /usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin. Nothing else from the rendering shell reaches the unit. The marker test parses MARKERS out of packages/bus/src/human.mjs rather than keeping a copy, so a marker added there is checked here too. It also refuses any Environment, EnvironmentFile, PassEnvironment or UnsetEnvironment key other than PATH, and any uncommented MOSAIC_, CLAUDE, CODEX or PI_. Mutants adding Environment=CLAUDECODE=1, PassEnvironment=PI_AGENT_DIR or an EnvironmentFile= are each killed.

What else I checked

  • ExecStart and exit codes against cli.mjs. serve takes --port, --board and --business today. Every refusal in its try exits 2: usage, an unknown option, a bad business id, and a startServer rejection, which includes EADDRINUSE. RestartPreventExitStatus=2 therefore covers usage and listen. There's no separate config exit to add: a missing system config still serves. Rocko's point 2 holds: until row 74 lands, a unit with the preview set exits 2 on unknown option and stays down rather than looping. That's the right failure.
  • Node by absolute path. systemd doesn't look ExecStart up in Environment=PATH, so @NODE@ from command -v node is necessary. It is held to [A-Za-z0-9/._+-] and printed on install (serve: …).
  • Values. The business check is serve's ID_PATTERN exactly. No value set allows a space, newline, %, $, a quote, a backslash, & or |, so neither systemd's expansion nor the sed render (delimiter |) can read a value as more than itself. A refused render or install writes nothing and creates no directory.
  • Install. It renders first, then mktemp in the unit directory, chmod 0644, and mv over the target. An identical file is left alone. --no-reload makes no systemctl call.
  • Uninstall and status. Uninstall refuses for active, activating and deactivating. Status reads the port from the installed ExecStart and asks http://127.0.0.1:<port>/healthz with a 5 s timeout. Neither starts anything.
  • Tests stay off the real systemd. Every run() builds its environment from scratch: PATH is the stand-in's bin, node's directory, /usr/bin and /bin, with HOME and XDG_CONFIG_HOME in a temp directory. Install and uninstall either pass --no-reload or put the stand-in first on PATH. One caveat: in the install, render and uninstall --no-reload calls without a stand-in, /usr/bin/systemctl is on PATH, but those paths never call it.

Not blocking

  • N1: install while the unit is active. install doesn't check the unit state. Run while the Console is up, it replaces the file and reloads. The running process is unchanged, but the next Restart=on-failure runs the new ExecStart, and Jason doesn't take part in that restart. That ExecStart includes the preview flags (--allow-user among them) and the repository and node paths from the installing shell. This doesn't break decision 94: nothing starts, and the code the unit runs is already agent-writable in the checkout. But an installed unit under ~/.config is less visible than a source change. I'd have install refuse while active, the way uninstall does, or at least print that the new unit takes effect at the next start or automatic restart. Sage's call whether that's a round 2 or a follow-up.
  • N2: the unit points at the checkout the script runs from. REPO is the script's own parent, so an install from a worktree runs that worktree's code. Mine rendered WorkingDirectory=/home/jwoltje/filbert-scratch/r75w. The serve: line shows it, but neither the header nor TOOLS.md says to install from /mnt/storage/src/mosaic-stack. One sentence would do.
  • N3: uninstall --no-reload skips the active check. It removed the unit file while my stand-in reported the unit active (rc 0). That copies bus-service.sh and BUILD.md says so, but the header, TOOLS.md and the brief all say plainly that uninstall refuses while active. Either run the check regardless (it's a read, not a reload) or name the exception in both places.
  • N4: a failed state read is closed, but silent. If list-units fails, set -e with pipefail ends uninstall with exit 1 and the file kept, which is right. But stderr is discarded, so nothing says why. A || die "cannot read the unit state" on that assignment would explain it.
  • N5: untested leading-character checks. Dropping the leading-alphanumeric check on --public-host or --auth-header survives the suite. Every bad value in the test starts with a. Both checks work by hand: -h and -X are refused. --allow-user has no leading check, so --allow-user --port renders … --allow-user --port. Serve's parser takes the next token as the value whatever it is, so today that's a user named --port and harmless. A leading [A-Za-z0-9] for the user, plus a -x case for each of the three, would close it.

Mutants

24 mutants (r75/mut/run.py), each run against service.test.mjs with the file restored from the index afterwards. The worktree diff was empty after the run.

Mutant Result
preview accepts two of three killed
user allows %, board allows a space, host allows $ killed (each)
business leading check dropped killed
header leading check dropped, host leading check dropped survive (N5)
port range dropped killed
uninstall never refuses; uninstall misses activating killed (each)
install runs enable --now after reload; install runs start with --no-reload; a start verb killed (each)
--no-reload ignored killed
install writes in place, no temp file survives, equivalent from the tests' side: they can't see a partial write
mkdir before render killed
status asks localhost killed
uninstall accepts serve flags killed
unit gains Environment=CLAUDECODE=1, PassEnvironment=PI_AGENT_DIR or EnvironmentFile= killed (each)
unit drops RestartPreventExitStatus=2 or NoNewPrivileges=yes; Restart=always killed (each)

Suites

In the 43d2328f worktree with the patch, with TMPDIR in my scratch and DOCKER_HOST pointed at a missing socket: node --test 'packages/webui/tests/*.test.mjs' gives 50 pass, 0 fail, the service file's 10 included. I didn't rerun the scripts/test-*.sh suites. None reads these 4 files, Rocko's gate log has them green, and Sage's rerun is the gate.
