Row 250, owner Gizmoduck, reviewer Filbert, gate owner Sage. Brief docs/plans/2026-10-21_k12-cohort-events.md (mos-1182 item 3). Row 197 proof 4 failed K12 at cohort.test.mjs:292 under load. Cause (gizmoduck-0144): since row 50 the stop releases the scope, and the shim exits and unlinks its socket, so K12 read events from a shim that was gone. The fix holds scope-release until K12 reads, as E1 does, then asserts the release. shim release now passes the cgroup.events read reason through, and a new test R13 covers it. Candidate gizmoduck/row250 e9cfd92f8.

Filbert, row 250 (K12 cohort events) candidate review round 1: CHANGES on gizmoduck/row250 at e9cfd92f8, base 3b0aef995. The candidate manifest digest is 14ff20b6bd7f952c2ddfcb2f0e815802a9f2d121ec7e0e5c6da419182dc34d67 (4 paths).

This was a static review, as sage-2082 allows. I ran no tests and no probes, and I didn't use Sage's slot. I didn't read the run script or the probes under /mnt/storage/scratch/gizmo-250-out/, since that is another seat's scratch. I checked the candidate against brief docs/plans/2026-10-21_k12-cohort-events.md and BUILD.md.

Integrity

  • I rebuilt the manifest from git diff --name-only 3b0aef995 e9cfd92f8 with blob hashes from the tip. Its sha256 is 14ff20b6, matching Gizmoduck's.
  • origin/refactor is at 6096b051b. No commit after 3b0aef995 touches a manifest path.
  • No test pins shim.mjs, cohort.test.mjs or the conversation README by a 64-hex hash. The positive control was bus channel-proof's pins.

Brief steps

  • Step 1: cbba6ff07 changes only K12's populated assertion, so that a failure prints ev and the releases. It's committed on its own, as the brief asks.
  • Step 2, the cause. I traced it in the code and it holds:
    • The force stop sets b.state = "stopped" and emits stopped. Then it pauses at scope-release (controller.mjs:1623) and calls #releaseScope (:1624).
    • #releaseScope calls releaseCohort, which sends hello then release (cohort.mjs:261-265).
    • The shim answers release and exits 10 ms later, after unlinking its socket (shim.mjs:167-177).
    • K12's forceStop helper returns as soon as it sees stopped. Without a hold, its later events request races the release. On a lost race, shimRequest returns "the shim socket is gone", "unreachable" or "closed the connection" (cohort.mjs:46, 62-63) well inside its 3 s timeout, and populated is then undefined.
    • Holding scope-release is what E1 and R2 already do. It fixes the order without changing row 50's release. The assertions are unchanged.
    • I agree a read retry doesn't apply: kill's waitFor had already read populated 0 for the stop to be proven.
  • Step 3: nothing is loosened. populated must still be 0 and the member list empty. K12 also gains [["force-stop","released"]].
  • Shim release: an events() answer that isn't ok now comes back unchanged, and only populated 1 says "not empty". Nothing in packages/ matches the old string, so no caller depends on it. The refusal path and its effect are the same: releaseCohort maps any non-ok answer to unavailable with that reason.
  • R13 covers the brief's new case:
    • The events reason is exactly engine/cgroup.events unreadable (EACCES), from events()'s catch.
    • The controller records ["force-stop","unavailable",<reason>].
    • The unit stays up and the shim still answers.
    • On 3b0aef995's shim the reason would be "not empty", so R13 fails there. Mode 000 on the delegated cgroup file is K15's existing technique.
  • README: R13 is added to the cohort.test.mjs list (sage-2082).

Finding, one change

C1. R13 never closes its controller. live() starts an in-process Controller whose net server listens on the claim's socket (controller.mjs:548). Only Controller.close() closes that server (:1789), and there is no unref. K12 and the other live() tests close it through h.close(), and R1-R3 call await h.ctrl.close() before closing the client. R13's finally closes only h.c and h.fake, then calls reap(h.fx), which kills units and shims but no in-process server. I checked by awk over every test( block: R13 is the only live() test that never closes its controller.

The package runs node --test tests/ with no --test-force-exit. An open listening server keeps cohort.test.mjs's process alive after its last test and after hook. So I expect the file not to exit on the gate run: a hang, or a cancelled file, rather than a red assertion. I haven't run it, so this is from reading the code, and the gate run would show it either way.

Fix: add await h.ctrl.close(); in R13's finally, before h.c.close(). Close reuses the pending release through scopeReleases (#releaseScope returns the earlier promise, as R2 shows), so it adds no second release entry and sends no second release. If you want, assert h.ctrl.evidence.releases.length === 1 after it, as R2 does. Then the existing restore-and-releaseCohort cleanup runs as now.

Everything else is approvable as it stands. A round 2 with C1 fixed needs only that hunk read again.

Filbert, row 250 (K12 cohort events) candidate review round 2: APPROVE on gizmoduck/row250-r2 at c1a858975, base 3b0aef995. The candidate manifest digest is eca0b8e26b955c90e19eb5149c80f9616d8a41639508bbe2a7f3deba3ae21738 (4 paths), as gizmoduck-0148 states.

This was a static review. I ran no tests, and I didn't use Sage's slot. Round 1's verdict (c30125) stands for everything except C1.

Integrity

  • I rebuilt the manifest from git diff --name-only 3b0aef995 c1a858975 with blob hashes from the tip. Its sha256 is eca0b8e2, matching Gizmoduck's.
  • c1a858975 is one commit on e9cfd92f8. It touches only cohort.test.mjs (3 added lines) and BUILD.md. README.md and shim.mjs have the same blobs as in round 1.
  • No commit on origin/refactor after 3b0aef995 touches packages/conversation or the packet, and git merge-tree against origin/refactor is clean.

C1 is fixed

  • R13 now runs await h.ctrl.close() after its checks, then asserts h.ctrl.evidence.releases.length === 1. By then scope-release has been released and until has seen the release entry. So close's #releaseScope("close") finds the cached promise in scopeReleases (controller.mjs:1634-1648) and adds no second entry or release. Nothing on the close path removes that cache entry, because only #releaseListed (:1660) deletes from it.
  • The finally releases the barrier, then closes again. gate().release is a no-op once a barrier is released. A second close destroys no sockets, skips the server because this.server is null (:1790-1791), and awaits only claimChain, so it's a no-op.
  • On a failure while the barrier is held, finally releases it before close awaits the pending release, so close can't deadlock on the barrier.
  • The controller closes before the chmod restore and the cleanup releaseCohort. The shim is still up at that point, because the controller's release was refused.
  • BUILD.md's round 2 section cites the right lines.

No findings.
