Row 251, owner Darkwing, reviewer Dewey, gate owner Sage. Brief docs/plans/2026-10-21_t27-ssh-add-lifetime.md (mos-1185 item 2). Cause (darkwing-0110): OpenSSH monotime() is whole seconds of CLOCK_BOOTTIME, and -t N sets death = monotime() + N, so a key lives between N-1 and N seconds. T27 now adds with -t 2 and sleeps 3.5 s. host-run.mjs is unchanged; production adds with timeout + 30. Candidate darkwing/row251 c19b4167e.

Row 251 round 1 (Dewey): static review, no blocking findings. The verdict gets recorded on round 2.

Candidate: branch darkwing/row251 at 68f2dfd4b, base 3b0aef995, round digest c7497de3…, as darkwing-0111 names it. I ran no tests.

What I checked

  • Manifest. Both blobs match 68f2dfd4b: host-run.test.mjs is 280132c7… and BUILD.md is 3232da94…. The path set equals git diff --name-only 3b0aef995 68f2dfd4b, and 3b0aef995 is an ancestor. host-run.mjs is unchanged. Nothing on origin/refactor since 3b0aef995 touches either bus file, so the BUILD.md "Base" section holds.

  • The source citations. I fetched ssh-agent.c and misc.c at openssh-portable tag V_10_5_P1. Their sha256 prefixes are 873691c4 and ee467f43, the same as in BUILD.md. dragon-lin reports OpenSSH_10.5p1. Every cited line says what BUILD.md says:

    • misc.c:1790-1798 tries CLOCK_BOOTTIME first, and monotime() (:1828) returns ts.tv_sec (:1833).
    • ssh-agent.c:1315 sets *deathp = monotime() + seconds. Lines 1410 and 1598 do the same for the default lifetime.
    • The reaper sets now = monotime() (:1057) and drops a key once now >= id->death (:1064).
    • The main loop calls reaper() after ppoll returns and before it handles requests (:2650).

    So -t N keeps a key for N minus the fraction of the second at the add. That is more than N - 1 seconds and at most N. Sage's probe (8 of 80 misses, all late in a monotonic second) and proof 5's 31.9 ms failure both fit.

  • The fix. With -t 2, the key lives more than 1 s. The first list runs milliseconds after addKey resolves, so it has close to a second of margin. The agent takes its monotime() before addKey resolves, and the second list runs at least 3.5 s after that. That is at least 1.5 s past the 2 s ceiling. Both checks stay as they were. A mutant that drops -t from addKey still fails the second list. I agree with taking -t 2 over -t 3.

  • Step 1, e5e4b2e5a. The commit adds only the marks and the failure messages. Both assert.match calls keep their patterns. hrtime is CLOCK_MONOTONIC in Node on Linux, so ns % 1e9 is the fraction into the monotonic second. The template literals call timing() on a pass too. That costs a few syscalls and prints nothing, so it doesn't matter.

  • Readers. No test or script reads host-run.test.mjs by path or pins its hash. There are no new tests, so the count stays the same.

Notes. None of them needs a change.

  • N1. /proc/uptime has two decimals, so the uptime column can't place an event inside the few-ms window that part A depends on. The hrtime column has to carry that. BUILD.md read BOOTTIME minus MONOTONIC as 1 µs at 19:09Z. A suspend since then would shift it, so read both clocks once when the slot starts and put the offset in "Slot results".
  • N2. The comment at host-run.mjs:179 says the agent drops the key at the call's limit plus 30 s. In fact it does so between 29 and 30 s after the add. That doesn't affect D7, and the file is outside this row's paths, so leave it.

Round 2

There's no need to hold the round. Brief step 3 accepts a longer lifetime only once step 2 has shown the whole-second cause in T27 itself, and part A is where that happens. So I'll record the verdict on round 2. On round 2 I'll check four things:

  • The test blob is still 280132c7… and only BUILD.md changed.
  • Part A's reds on e5e4b2e5a match the prediction and the stop rule from sage-2084.
  • All 18 runs on c19b4167e pass.
  • Parts B to D are green.

I didn't read the align hook, which is in Darkwing's scratch, so the review covers the results it reports, not how it times the adds.

Row 251 round 2 (Dewey): APPROVE

Candidate: branch darkwing/row251 at 27f01ef63, base 3b0aef995, manifest digest f2bdd684…, as darkwing-0116 names it. I ran no tests. This review covers the slot results recorded in BUILD.md. The bus suite rerun on Sage's slot is still the gate.

What I checked

  • Manifest. I rebuilt it from the blobs at 27f01ef63 and it hashes to f2bdd68461976b68…, the digest on round 2. host-run.test.mjs is still 280132c7…, and the blob is the same at 68f2dfd4b and c19b4167e. 27f01ef63 is the only commit since 68f2dfd4b and touches only BUILD.md. 3b0aef995 and 68f2dfd4b are both ancestors. host-run.mjs matches 3b0aef995. Nothing on origin/refactor touches the row's two paths or host-run.mjs, and git merge-tree against 829e5f834 is clean.
  • N1. BOOTTIME minus MONOTONIC read 1 µs, then 0 twice, at slot start. So the hrtime fractions line up with the agent's second boundaries.
  • Part A, the prediction and sage-2084's rule. On e5e4b2e5a, 0.990 and 0.998 passed 3 of 3, so nothing counted toward the stop. The six reds were all at 0.995 and 0.996. The prediction expected reds at 0.993 to 0.997 and said a green at 0.993 or 0.997 was also consistent with the cause. Every red failed on the first list with "no identities", with the agent alive and its socket present. The timing table fits the whole-second reaper: at 0.995 addKey resolved at 0.9988 to 0.9992 and the list reached the agent after the boundary, and at 0.996 the key was stored before the boundary and addKey resolved after it. On 68f2dfd4b all 18 runs passed, including the 6 at 0.995 and 0.996. That's the failure window, so the fix is tested where -t 1 broke. This is the evidence brief step 3 needed before accepting a longer lifetime.
  • Parts B to D. B passed 24 of 24 for the whole file. C passed 598 of 598, three times. D passed 598 of 598 twice, run concurrently in two worktrees. The sweep left nothing behind. BUILD.md is right that these used the bus files at 3b0aef995. T27's file imports broker.mjs, runtime.mjs and store.mjs, and row 196 has changed bus files since then. The gate rerun covers that.
  • The stop before C1. It was the busy check doing its job, not a red. I agree with resuming only C and D (sage-2159). The resume script waits only for exact sleep 60 command lines in Darkwing's own trees, and anything else still trips the checks. I didn't read the scripts or logs in Darkwing's scratch. This rests on BUILD.md's description of them.

Note on the follow-up. It doesn't block 251.

  • The two orphans come from host-run.test.mjs:528 and :536, as BUILD.md says. One detail differs from BUILD.md: the planted shell is killed by sweepRunDir at host-run.mjs:238, which sends SIGKILL to the pid only. The t.after kill is a fallback. The decoy is the one t.after kills.
  • Of the two fixes BUILD.md names, use the process-group kill: process.kill(-pid, 'SIGKILL') in both t.after hooks. Both shells are spawned detached, so each leads its own group, and the group outlives its leader while sleep runs.
  • Don't use exec sleep 60. The sweep kills a recorded pid only when its /proc/<pid>/cmdline contains the run dir (host-run.mjs:236). The dir is the shell's $0, and exec replaces the command line with sleep 60. So the planted process would survive and the "planted process killed" assert would fail.
**Row 251 round 2 (Dewey): APPROVE** Candidate: branch `darkwing/row251` at 27f01ef63, base 3b0aef995, manifest digest `f2bdd684…`, as darkwing-0116 names it. I ran no tests. T27's file imports `broker.mjs`, `runtime.mjs` and `store.mjs`, and row 196 has changed bus files since then. The gate rerun covers that. - **The stop before C1.** It was the busy check doing its job, not a red. I agree with resuming only C and D (sage-2159). The resume script waits only for exact `sleep 60` command lines in Darkwing's own trees, and anything else still trips the checks. I didn't read the scripts or logs in Darkwing's scratch. This rests on BUILD.md's description of them. **Note on the follow-up. It doesn't block 251.** - The two orphans come from `host-run.test.mjs:528` and `:536`, as BUILD.md says. One detail differs from BUILD.md: the planted shell is killed by `sweepRunDir` at `host-run.mjs:238`, which sends SIGKILL to the pid only. The `t.after` kill is a fallback. The decoy is the one `t.after` kills. - Of the two fixes BUILD.md names, use the process-group kill: `process.kill(-pid, 'SIGKILL')` in both `t.after` hooks. Both shells are spawned `detached`, so each leads its own group, and the group outlives its leader while `sleep` runs. - Don't use `exec sleep 60`. The sweep kills a recorded pid only when its `/proc/<pid>/cmdline` contains the run dir (`host-run.mjs:236`). The dir is the shell's `$0`, and `exec` replaces the command line with `sleep 60`. So the planted process would survive and the "planted process killed" assert would fail.
