The matrix is accurate. Every cell matches `evidence/<case>/` (exit, target, gate calls, tools offered, and the `is_error` and content the model saw). On my machine all 34 cases reproduce with identical results: 32/32 short cases and 2/2 of the 600 s cases. The scripted mock in a loopback-only namespace is a sound method for this matrix.

- **a.** Rely-on lines 2, 3 and 4 tell S6 to fall back on the tool limit for Claude Code command hooks that crash, sit at a missing path or hang. A wrapped hook fails closed in all three cases. I ran six extra cases on the cc-2 setup:

||||
- A missing gate and a non-executable gate, each with `|| exit 2`, block.
|
||||
- `timeout 2 <gate> hang || exit 2`, with hook `timeout` 10, blocks in 2.4 s.

- Allow (`true || exit 2`) and the JSON deny still behave as before.

||||

||||
Please add wrapper cases and amend the three lines. The record has suggested text and the caveats: the inner timeout must sit below the hook timeout; use `timeout -k`; `--bare` still disables hooks.

- **b.** `evidence/cc-1d-block-bare` has no case in `probe.sh` and no row in the table (35 directories for 34 cases). Remove it or add the case.

results. The problem is in the rely-on lines. Lines 2, 3 and 4 tell S6 to
|
||||
fall back on the tool limit for Claude Code command hooks that crash, sit
|
||||
at a missing path or hang. A one-line wrapper makes all three fail closed,
|
||||
and I ran it. S6 needs that, because a tool limit can't express a
|
||||
conditional gate.
|
||||
|
||||
## Method
|
||||
|
||||
- Export of `771fc3d2` (`git archive`) into
|
||||
`~/darkwing-scratch/s0-review/probes`, without `evidence/`. I made two
|
||||
edits to `probe.sh`: `SDK_ENTRY` points at my own install, and I added
|
||||
six `dw-*` cases. `probe-wrap.patch` here is the whole diff.
|
||||
- SDK: `@anthropic-ai/[email protected]` in its own directory. The
|
||||
integrity hash matches the registry, and its `claudeCodeVersion` is
|
||||
2.1.289. The Claude binary's sha256 starts `a186b99e`, the same as in
|
||||
the matrix. Pi is 0.85.1.
|
||||
- `cells.mjs` pulls one line per case from a run tree: exit, elapsed
|
||||
time, target, gate log, request count, tools offered, and each tool
|
||||
result's `is_error` and content. `cmp.mjs` compares two trees with run
|
||||
paths and the trailing system reminder normalised away.
|
||||
|
||||
## Cells against the evidence
|
||||
|
||||
For every row I compared the table against `evidence/<case>/`:
|
||||
`outcome.txt`, `gate.log` and the tool results in `mock.jsonl`. Exit
|
||||
code, target, gate calls, tools offered and the `is_error` and content
|
||||
the model saw all agree with the table. All 23 Claude runs end with
|
||||
`result: success` and `is_error: false`, as the exit-codes section says.
|
||||
|
||||
## Reproduction
|
||||
|
||||
`probe.sh` on my machine, with `S0_RUNS` under `~/darkwing-scratch`:
|
||||
- The 32 short cases: `cmp-short.txt`, 32/32 identical.
|
||||
- The two 600 s cases, cc-4d-hang700-default and sdk-6c-hang-default:
|
||||
`cmp-long.txt`, 2/2 identical. Elapsed 600 647 ms and 600 703 ms
|
||||
against the candidate's 600 607 ms and 600 534 ms.
|
||||
|
||||
So 34/34. The method holds up: a scripted model in a loopback-only
|
||||
namespace is the right call for this matrix. Hooks run inside the
|
||||
harness before the result goes back, so a real provider would add cost
|
||||
and noise without testing anything more. The mock also makes the model
|
||||
call tools the harness didn't offer, which is a stronger test of the
|
||||
tool-limit cases than a real model would give.
|
||||
|
||||
## Wrapper cases
|
||||
|
||||
Claude Code runs a command hook through `/bin/sh -c`. Exit 2 blocks, and
|
||||
every other non-zero exit is a non-blocking error, which is why a crash
|
||||
fails open. Wrapping the gate turns every failure into exit 2. All six
|
||||
cases use the cc-2 setup (hook on `Write`, the model calls `Write`). The
|
||||
evidence is in `wrap-evidence/<case>/`, with `$HOME` written as `~`.

The first two show the wrapper doesn't change a working gate: allow
|
||||
still allows, and the JSON deny still denies with its own message. The
|
||||
other four are the failures lines 2 to 4 say fail open. Wrapped, they
|
||||
fail closed.
|
||||
|
||||
Limits of what I tested:
|
||||
- The hang case needs the inner `timeout` below the hook's `timeout`. If
|
||||
the hook timeout fires first, the tool runs, as cc-4 shows.
|
||||
- `timeout` sends SIGTERM. I didn't test a gate that ignores it. `timeout
|
||||
-k 1 N` adds a SIGKILL a second later and should be what S6 writes, but
|
||||
that is a recommendation, not a result.
|
||||
- `--bare` still turns settings hooks off (cc-1e). The wrapper doesn't
|
||||
change that.
|
||||
- The wrapper catches a gate that fails. It can't catch a gate that exits
|
||||
0 when it should have blocked.
|
||||
|
||||
## Issues
|
||||
|
||||
**a. Rely-on lines 2, 3 and 4 (required).** For Claude Code command
|
||||
hooks, change "rely on the tool limit" to the wrapped hook, and add the
|
||||
`dw-*` cases (or your own equivalents) to `probe.sh`, the table and
|
||||
`evidence/`. Suggested text, adjust as you like:
|
||||
- 2: "On Claude Code, a command hook wrapped as `<gate> || exit 2`,
|
||||
because the wrapper turns a crash into a block. The SDK callback fails
|
||||
open; rely on the tool limit, or see line 6."
|
||||
- 3: "On Claude Code, a command hook wrapped as `<gate> || exit 2`,
|
||||
because `/bin/sh` fails on a missing or non-executable command and the
|
||||
wrapper turns that into a block."
|
||||
- 4, Claude Code: "a command hook wrapped as `timeout -k 1 N <gate> ||
|
||||
exit 2`, with the hook's `timeout` above N + 1. An unwrapped hook whose
|
||||
timeout expires lets the tool run."
|
||||
Line 6 already says the same thing about SDK callbacks: usable as a hook
|
||||
only if the callback turns its own failure into a deny. Command hooks
|
||||
get the same rule, applied by the shell.
|
||||
|
||||
**b. Stale evidence directory (required).** `evidence/cc-1d-block-bare`
|
||||
has no case in `probe.sh` and no row in the table: 35 evidence
|
||||
directories for 34 cases. `collect.sh` copies every directory under
|
||||
`runs/`, so an old run came along. Remove it, or add the case and a row.
|
||||
|
||||
**c. cc-5c-disallowed row.** The table gives the flags as `--tools
|
||||
Read,Write,Bash --disallowedTools Bash`. `probe.sh` also passes
|
||||
`--allowedTools Read,Write`. Add it to the row so the cell matches the
|
||||
command.
|
||||
|
||||
**d. `collect.sh` inputs.** It reads `runs.cmp`, `runs-2.cmp`, `saw-1.txt`
|
||||
and `saw-2.txt`, but no committed script writes them. Either commit the
|
||||
commands that do, or say in Method how they were made.
|
||||
|
||||
**e. `SDK_ENTRY`.** `probe.sh` sets it to your scratch path and doesn't
|
||||
read it from the environment, so a reviewer has to edit the script.
|
||||
`SDK_ENTRY=${SDK_ENTRY:-...}` fixes it.
|
||||
|
||||
**f. Exit codes section.** "exit 0 in every run that reached a model"
|
||||
isn't true for pi-2c (exit 3) and pi-4b (124), which both sent a request
|
||||
to the model. The next sentence explains both codes, so a reword covers
|
||||
it, for example "exit 0 in every run that ended on its own".
|
||||
|
||||
Only a and b need a new round. If c to f are fixed in the same round,
|
||||
I'll check them too.
