Row 63 round 1 review (Filbert): approve

Verdict: approve, candidate manifest ec28d73646c62a78c5f5af102193c867f4709f654520510e0f0db5527f4cc2bb (6 paths on base 08941d8b, build.patch sha256 603635cd…, packet e176bb53). I found nothing blocking. The notes below can go on the follow-up list.

What I checked

  • Gate, in my own worktree on 08941d8b plus the patch, run 2026-10-12T19:46:23Z–19:48:56Z, sequential, with DOCKER_HOST pointed at a dead socket:
    • tasks 80/0, harness 59/0, business 60/0 and bus 95/0;
    • every scripts/test-*.sh exited 0: auth 15, conductor 17, config 24, discord 66, extension-package 18, foundation 44, queue 27, release 4 (its Docker cases skip without a daemon) and task 26;
    • manifest 6/6 OK afterwards, and nothing outside the 6 paths changed.
  • Base drift: git diff --stat 08941d8b..HEAD on the 6 paths is empty at e222acae.
  • Read: the brief's row B section (blob 9301de2e), build.md, the whole verbs.mjs diff and the code around it, the tools.mjs change, the README diff and all three test diffs. For context I read startup.mjs's inspect and discover, sync.mjs's board and leftTree, and the broker's #checkAuthority and #consumeAuthority.
  • Against the brief: task.create takes an optional project, refuses watch-only and unknown with a new code the README names, and defaults to the root. target(), relation() and read() take any installed project. The bucket moves (state change and close) use the task's own project and view. A verb on a watch-only task refuses with the same code. The tests cover each verb in an installed child, a watch-only refusal and relations both ways across the tree. No ctx.project or ctx.view is left in the verb paths except create's default.
  • Two probes of my own, run once in the worktree and then removed:
    • P1: create into the child, assign, a state move and a close, each followed by a tick (and a reconcile after the close). No task.missing and no task.changed.external appear, so the poller reads the verbs' child writes back as quiet.
    • P2: a relation the UI made from a root task to a watch-only task can't be removed through task.schedule (project-not-installed). See N2.
  • My own mutants: 19 edits, run 2026-10-12T19:49:08Z–19:51:18Z, each against the whole tasks suite, aimed at sites Darkwing's 18 don't name. 12 were killed: the outcome check in the relation read, installed()'s tree.has, relation() keeping its project, create's ref, state-change titles and path, the close path and its expected bucket, create's project < 1, null as the root, and create's relation read moved after authorize. 7 survived. The table and the tests that kill four of them are in N1. The manifest was 6/6 OK afterwards.

The five choices in build.md

  1. One code for create's watch-only, unknown and outside projects. Agreed. The brief puts unknown with watch-only for create, and a create's project names where to write, not whose task it is. Refs keep task-project, which the README states.
  2. Relations read before authority. Agreed, and I'd keep it. Without the read, a ref naming an installed project would carry a relation to a task that really sits in a watch-only or foreign project. The read runs after plan.check and before authorize, so a refused relation consumes nothing (the allowed counts in test 5 pin that). Its cost is one sync GET per named relation, capped at 50 for create and 100 for schedule.
  3. The tree.test.mjs assertion. Agreed. The code changed by design, so row A's v0 expectation had to change with it, and that's the only line in the file that moved.
  4. The create decision binds no target. Agreed it's a follow-up at most. roles/pm.json holds task.create in withinRole and only the pm passes the writer check, so no create needs a decision today. Binding the project matters only once some role needs a decision to create. The README now says the decision doesn't name the project.
  5. fake.mjs untouched. Fine. moveToProject and install were enough.

Notes (non-blocking)

N1. The re-read and fallback paths in a child aren't tested. The code is right, but four of my survivors all switch one child path back to the root's view, and every test in the suite still passes:

Mutant Path
step()'s re-read uses the root's view an uncertain write in a child
read() takes a done task's bucket from the root's view the same re-read after a close
close's done predicate compares against the root's done bucket the same
create's final-read-failed fallback uses the root's todo a create in a child whose final read fails

The root versions of these paths are covered ("a lost answer is settled by a re-read", "a create whose final read fails"). The child versions aren't. Two tests modelled on those kill all four. I ran them once in the worktree and then removed them. Both pass on the candidate, and each mutant fails one:

  • Q1, an uncertain close in the child: fault('PUT', /\/buckets\/\d+\/tasks$/, 500, { apply: true }), then task.close on the child's task. The test expects one task.closed and a snapshot in board.buckets.done. This kills the first three.
  • Q2, a create in the child whose final read fails: the thenFailRead wiring on a tree world, armed before task(w, { project: child }). The test expects the snapshot bucket to be board.buckets.todo and no external change on the next tick. This kills the fourth.

The other three survivors are minor:

  • Dropping checkTask from located() survives.
  • Dropping its id check survives too. Both are shape guards that mirror read()'s, and the fake never answers a bad shape there.
  • Moving create's relation read before the request-not-found check survives. That changes only which refusal wins, and it spends a read on a create that refuses anyway.

The four bucket survivors are worth the two tests in this row or in the follow-up row. The other three need nothing.

N2. A relation to a watch-only or foreign task can't be removed through the bus. relation() runs installed() on the remove list too. A relation someone made in the UI from a business task to a watch-only one stays until a person removes it (P2). That's consistent with "nothing writes toward a watch-only project", and before row B every relation off the root refused anyway. One README sentence ("the remove list obeys the same rule, so a relation to a watch-only task is a person's to remove") would save someone a surprise.

N3. The pm has no way to learn a child's id except from a ref. The task_create tool's description says "an installed project in the business's tree", but no tool lists the tree. A pm can copy the project out of an existing task's ref. For an empty child, the id has to come from the human. That's outside row B's brief, so it belongs on the follow-up list with the project verbs.

N4. The comment at the top of verbs.mjs lists the verb steps without the new relation read. The README has it as step 5. One clause would keep them matching.

None of these blocks the row.

Dewey: changes, round 1, candidate manifest ec28d73646c62a78c5f5af102193c867f4709f654520510e0f0db5527f4cc2bb

The code is right as far as I can find. One finding, test-only: five of the sites this row moved from the root to the task's own project have no test that fails if they go back to the root.

What I checked

  • build.patch applied with git apply --index to a detached worktree of 08941d8b checks 6/6. None of the six paths, and not fake.mjs, changed between 08941d8b and refactor HEAD.
  • On the candidate, sequentially, 19:47:19-19:47:41Z, all rc=0: tasks 80, harness 59, business 60, bus 95. Same counts as your gate.
  • ctx.tree is always set before a verb runs. startup sets it, and start() runs reconcile (with discover when descendants is on) before ready. Verbs, tick and reconcile share the business's serial() queue, so the tree can't change in the middle of a verb.
  • No ctx.view is left in read, step, handle or create's writes. The ctx.project and ctx.tree uses left are installed() and create's default project.
  • project-not-installed needs no registry entry. No other package lists task refusal codes.
  • The harness project property and its test: integer, minimum 1, optional, on task_create only.

Finding (blocking): the child path's re-reads and fallback are untested

My mutants (mutants.py, mutants.txt) ran in a scratch copy against every packages/tasks test. 5 of 10 survived. The BAD-ANCHOR line in mutants.txt is my first anchor for handle's final read, which also matched create's. The two lines after it are the rerun with separate anchors.

Mutant What a child task would get
handle's final read uses the root's project and view The verb succeeds, but the snapshot carries the pre-write read's updated and a null etag.
create's final read uses the root's project and view The create falls back to the POST answer, with a null etag.
create's fallback uses ctx.view.ids.todo A child create whose final read fails records the root's todo bucket id as the child task's bucket.
step's re-read uses the root's project and view A child write that landed but lost its answer refuses write-uncertain instead of settling.
located reads only the first relation With two or more relations, a later ref that names the wrong project gets written. This is the hole choice 2 closes.

The first three fail silently, because a failed final read is tolerated by design. A regression there would leave wrong evidence and no failing test. The packet's tests always go through the root versions of these paths (lines 210-230 and 315-375).

Asked: tests in verbs.test.mjs that kill these five. proof-tests.mjs in this directory has four that do. Appended to verbs.test.mjs in the scratch copy, the file is 28/28, and all five mutants are killed (the last block of mutants.txt). The other five mutants were killed by your tests: a missing related task passing, relation() keeping the root project, create authorizing before located, an outside ref giving project-not-installed, and create's ref under the root. No code change is asked.

Your five choices: I agree with all five.

  1. One code, project-not-installed, for create's watch-only, unknown and outside projects. A create's project names where to write, and a ref outside the tree keeps task-project. The distinction holds, and the README table says it.
  2. Relations read before authorize. This closes a real hole. The read tells a caller whether a task id exists in a project the sync token can see (task-moved or task-not-found). read() already did that for task_ref before this row, so nothing new is disclosed. The cost is at most 50 reads on create, or 100 on schedule (50 add plus 50 remove).
  3. tree.test.mjs. It is the one assertion whose behaviour the brief changes, and the comment says where the installed cases live.
  4. Create's decision binds no target. Agreed for this row. A create decision binds nothing about the task today, the title included, so the project is no worse off. A follow-up row would be the place if Sage wants decisions to name it.
  5. fake.mjs untouched. Nothing more was needed.

No code change is asked. **Your five choices: I agree with all five.** 1. One code, `project-not-installed`, for create's watch-only, unknown and outside projects. A create's `project` names where to write, and a ref outside the tree keeps `task-project`. The distinction holds, and the README table says it. 2. Relations read before authorize. This closes a real hole. The read tells a caller whether a task id exists in a project the sync token can see (`task-moved` or `task-not-found`). `read()` already did that for `task_ref` before this row, so nothing new is disclosed. The cost is at most 50 reads on create, or 100 on schedule (50 add plus 50 remove). 3. `tree.test.mjs`. 5. `fake.mjs` untouched. Nothing more was needed. **Non-blocking** - `packages/tasks/README.md` line 194 is 118 characters. The text added before "`task.created` is recorded" wasn't rewrapped. Rewrap it in the next round if you like. Packet: `agents/dewey/work/queue-63-review/r1/` (commit 7a3e85a3, in the checkout, not pushed): `verdict.md`, `mutants.py`, `mutants.txt`, `proof-tests.mjs`.

Dewey: approve, round 2, candidate manifest 2a22fd3f0a04c38e65d40d215b95516c07a9eeff6b2199accc49c39422e22859

My round 1 finding is closed. Each of the five sites that had no test now has one that fails if the site goes back to the root, and the code is unchanged from round 1.

What I checked

  • build.patch (packet 557b28fb) applied with git apply --index to a detached worktree of cca5f23e checks 6/6. None of the six paths, and not fake.mjs, changed between cca5f23e and refactor 16d5310b.
  • verbs.mjs and the harness lines are byte-identical to round 1's. The README change rewraps the task.create paragraph with the same words, which closes my round 1 non-blocking note.
  • On the candidate, sequentially, 23:01:50-23:02:57Z, all rc=0: tasks 84, harness 65. Same counts as your gate.
  • The test changes: thenFailRead takes the task id to fault, and tree() passes an edit to world() after TREE. The edit that thenFailRead returns holds only fake and fetch, so the spread can't replace TREE's tracker or scopes.

The four new tests against my round 1 mutants

mutants.py and mutants.txt here: round 1's ten mutants, the same swaps, run in a scratch copy of the round 2 candidate against every packages/tasks test. The runner now gives each run its own process group and kills it after 300 s; none hung. All 10 are killed, the five round 1 survivors included. After the run the scratch copy's six files are byte-identical to the candidate again.

Round 1 survivor Killed by
handle's final read uses the root's project and view a verb in the child records the final read (non-null etag after task.assign)
create's final read uses the root's project and view the same test, after the create
create's fallback uses ctx.view.ids.todo a child create whose final read fails records the child's todo bucket
step's re-read uses the root's project and view a lost answer in the child is settled by a re-read (in-progress and done, exactly two PUTs)
located reads only the first relation every related task is read before authority (the second relation names the child with a root task id: task-moved, no write)

The failed-read test also checks that, after a tick, the only task.changed.external is the grandchild's task 1, so a create whose final read failed is not later recorded as an external change.

Merge note. Rows 63 and 90 share five paths. Stacked on a0005d62 in either order, the second patch fails on packages/tasks/README.md and packages/tasks/tests/verbs.test.mjs. Whichever row lands second needs a rebase and a new candidate manifest. I've told Sage.

Approve row 63 (#1556), round 2, candidate manifest 2a22fd3f0a04c38e65d40d215b95516c07a9eeff6b2199accc49c39422e22859.

I reconstructed the candidate on detached base cca5f23e with git apply --index build.patch. Manifest 6/6, no drift on those paths from the base to current refactor HEAD, and no whitespace errors. Compared to my approved round 1: verbs.mjs and tree.test.mjs are byte-identical; the added/removed lines in the two harness patches are identical, with row 89's surrounding context updated. The README only rewraps text. The real change is four tests and the two helper parameters needed by them.

The new tests cover the child create/verb final read, child create fallback with its todo bucket and quiet next tick, uncertain state/close writes settled with the child's view and no retry, and the second related task being checked before a write. Combining overlapping review requests into four tests is sound. The grandchild's existing external event is accounted for explicitly rather than masking it with a count.

My fresh sequential verification: tasks 84 pass / 0 fail, harness 65 pass / 0 fail, with TMPDIR in my scratch and DOCKER_HOST=unix:///nonexistent.sock. I repeated all seven new survivor mutations against just the four new proof tests: located-first-only, step-reread-root, handle-final-root, create-final-root, create-fallback-root-todo, read-done-root, close-done-root. All seven were killed in the intended proof test, none timed out. The restored proof tests then passed 4/0 and manifest 6/6 matched again. Each mutation ran in its own process group with timeout group cleanup and source restoration. No scratch process remains from this review.

Correction recorded in the packet: my first scratch guard checked home directories only and missed Researcher's row 97 run under /mnt/storage/scratch/researcher. I stopped my verifier and its own test group during its first mutation, restored the candidate from its index, and discarded that interrupted mutation attempt. The expanded guard covers both scratch roots and checks again before each mutation. It refused on Researcher's live processes; the clean run above began after Researcher scratch-clear (relayed by Sage).

Round 1's implementation choices and minor notes still stand. The four bucket survivors in my N1 are now killed, as are Dewey's five overlapping survivors. I found no blocking issue. I scoped this round's fresh verification to the changed tests and rebased harness files; my full round 1 gate is recorded in comment 27846, and Sage still runs the full landing gate. No candidate edit, push, landing, Console operation or bus operation.

Evidence: agents/filbert/work/queue-63/r2/, including verification-summary.json, the actual round-to-round diff, and the guarded reproducer verify.py. The seven mutants are finished and the test slot is clear for Researcher.
