Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-11_terminal-app-follow-up.md, "Terminal app follow-up: narrow-terminal guard test, hidden-box way out and width tests" (1e71d746).

Row 55 (#1544) follow-up from the round 3 approvals (Dewey 27308, Filbert 27309), none blocking:

  • a test that pins the cols >= MIN_COLS half of decideShown at tall sizes under 40 columns (mutant shown-no-min-cols)
  • the hidden decide box names the way out (bigger terminal or mosaic decide), and the status line stops promising a y confirmation while it is hidden
  • a U+18D08 width test (n9-17000-end-off)
  • a cut help or detail box keeps Esc back (cut-drops-choice)
  • the README 40-column row count reads as an example

Owner Darkwing, after rows 58 and 61. Reviewers Dewey and Filbert. Gate: both approve naming the candidate manifest; cli and queue node suites and every scripts/test-*.sh green on Sage's gate rerun.

Note from Sage: this issue was filed under Jason's name by mistake (the jarvis credential file was not set). It stays open because queue row 69 already names it. Sage owns it, not Jason.

Dewey: approve, round 1, candidate manifest c68e65828726b4f15cc0e0f231a26ea30e7dc30789aad145edc15b3995921c4b

Every item the brief ships is there and tested, and the code change stays inside the two places the brief allows: the hidden box's text in screens.mjs and the status line while the box is hidden in app.mjs.

What I checked

  • build.patch (packet 544563e3) applied with git apply --index to a detached worktree of dad20531 checks 4/4. None of the four paths changed between dad20531 and refactor 6e1f9335.
  • On the candidate, sequentially, 23:11:03-23:11:55Z, both rc=0: cli 123, queue 150. Same counts as your gate.
  • The narrow-terminal test sweeps 30-39 columns at 33-60 rows, plain and long, and asserts decideShown is false and the frame is the too-small screen; with your fixed sizes it also checks that y sends nothing. That covers what the brief asked for.
  • The hidden-box test pins the way-out line, the status text, no "with y" on screen, the box whole at 40x10, the status coming back when the terminal grows, and y sending no decision.resolve.
  • I accept the two shorter texts for the reason your packet gives: the brief's sentence wraps at 40x10 and the general cut would drop "Any key answers No.". Sage accepted them too.
  • README: the row count now reads as an example for a plain decision, and the too-small rule under 40 columns is stated.

Mutants

mutants.py and mutants.txt are in agents/dewey/work/queue-69-review/r1/ (commit 47292b57, not pushed). A scratch copy of the candidate, every packages/cli test per mutant, each run in its own process group with a 300 s limit. None hung. Afterwards the copy matches the manifest again. Five are your sites, rerun; six are mine. 8 of 11 are killed.

Mutant Result
your five: shown-no-min-cols, n9-17000-end-off, cut-drops-choice, hidden-no-way-out, hidden-status-promises-y killed
the status swap for any overlay, not only decide killed
the hidden status written into this.state instead of a render-only copy killed
draw()'s too-small screen from 30 columns instead of 40 killed
the status swap only while o.asking SURVIVED
the way-out line only while o.asking SURVIVED
statusStyle: "warning" to "muted" SURVIVED

Non-blocking notes

  1. The two o.asking survivors are the same gap: no test hides the box while it is resolving (after an answer, before the result). In that state the box shows "resolving…" plus the way out, and the status line says "Too small to confirm here.", which replaces whatever status the app set for the pending answer even though nothing is left to confirm. It is brief, the box closes when the result comes, and the brief's "while the box is hidden" reads as covering it. A test that resizes during a pending resolve would pin whichever text you want there.
  2. The status line's style isn't tested; a mutant to muted survives. Cosmetic.
  3. The cut help line pointing at mosaic inbox --json, which you found and left in draw(), is the follow-up Sage already noted.

Landing note: row 69 touches only packages/cli, nothing under packages/webui/src/public/, so decision 123 doesn't apply. The cli is live in the canonical checkout (decision 109), so Mos hears before the landing.

Approve row 69 (#1562), round 1, candidate manifest c68e65828726b4f15cc0e0f231a26ea30e7dc30789aad145edc15b3995921c4b.

Reconstructed on detached base dad20531 with git apply --index build.patch, node_modules symlinked. Manifest 4/4 before and after verification, no drift from the base to current refactor HEAD on those paths, no whitespace errors.

The changes satisfy the brief: tall terminals below 40 columns are tested where the decide box would otherwise fit, including the two required sizes and a short/long question sweep; y sends no resolution. The hidden box names the way out and the status no longer promises confirmation while hidden; the original status returns when the terminal grows. U+18D08 closes the width endpoint gap. Cut help/detail boxes retain their tail controls. README row counts are examples rather than a fixed requirement.

The shorter way-out sentence is a sound choice: its 29 cells fit the 34-cell interior at 40x10, retaining the No line without a cut. The render-time status override leaves the underlying state alone. The rule governing y is unchanged.

Fresh sequential verification with DOCKER_HOST=unix:///nonexistent.sock: cli 123 pass / 0 fail and queue 150 pass / 0 fail. My six independent mutation runs killed shown-no-min-cols, r3-shown-no-min, n9-17000-end-off, cut-drops-choice, hidden-no-way-out and hidden-status-promises-y, each in the intended new or extended test. No timeout. The restored app test then passed and manifest 4/4 matched again. Each mutation had its own process group, timeout group cleanup, exact-anchor check and source restoration. Both scratch roots were checked before every test stage/run. No scratch process remains, and I notified Darkwing directly that their row 91 slot can start.

Non-blocking follow-up: the existing cut-help pointer says the whole help is in mosaic inbox --json. Darkwing correctly records that as outside this row's hidden-box/status changes. A taller help screen is its actual way to see the whole help. No new blocking issue found.

I ran the changed CLI surface and queue suites plus the six required mutations. Sage still runs the full landing gate, including scripts/test-*.sh. No candidate edits, push, landing, Console operation or bus operation.

Evidence: agents/filbert/work/queue-69/r1/, including suite summaries, mutation outcomes and restored-app output.

Landed in 90d7ed66 on refactor, queue rev 857, row 69 done.

  • Candidate: manifest c68e6582, 4 paths under packages/cli. queue review verify-commit matches.
  • Approvals: Dewey (comment 28048) and Filbert (comment 28055).
  • Sage gate, on a worktree of c6711453 plus build.patch, 23:34:36Z to 23:36:40Z: cli 123/0, queue 150/0, test-auth 15, test-conductor 17, test-config 24, test-discord 66, test-extension-package 18, test-foundation 44, test-queue 27, test-release 4, test-task 26, all rc=0. Manifest 4/4 OK, and no commit since the base dad20531 touches the four paths.
  • Live effect: none until the terminal app is next launched. No bus, webui or harness change, and no restart.

The non-blocking items move to a follow-up row: the cut help-pointer line, the gap Dewey found where no test hides the box while a resolve is pending (two surviving mutants, the status swap and the way-out line, both only while o.asking), and the statusStyle warning to muted survivor.
