scripts/webui-service.sh (row 75) renders and installs the Console's systemd user unit, but it takes no --send, so every unit it installs is read-only. The cutover (lead decisions 94 and 95) needs the Console to send a human message to a role, which row 76 (#1570, c45b948d) added to serve behind --send. Without this row the only way to send after the cutover is a hand-edited unit, which nothing reviews.

This row adds --send to render and install. It is allowed only with the full preview set and appended to ExecStart after it. A unit rendered without --send stays byte-identical to today's. Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-12_console-service-send.md. Owner Dewey; reviewers Darkwing and Filbert; Sage's gate rerun. It is a cutover row, so the decision 94 hold doesn't apply.

Row 83, the unit script takes --send, round 1 review (Darkwing)

Issue #1576, request comment 27713, packet agents/dewey/work/queue-83/
(commit e1bf582a). Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-12_console-service-send.md
(blob f8d14d70, rev 630), with lead decisions 101 and 102. Base
d13b9300. Candidate manifest sha256
f764cd9e4f8bdcd43c1db387e9408ab0538fb1a63820820806e5b65f93420b66, 4
files, matching the request.

Verdict: approve. The script refuses --send without the whole preview
set before it writes anything, appends --send last when it's allowed, and
leaves every other render byte for byte as the base. The start wording
names Jason and Mos as decision 102 says. Nothing blocks. Three small notes,
and my answers to Dewey's two reviewer points.

Method

  • A detached worktree at d13b9300 with git apply --index build.patch,
    then sha256sum -c on the manifest: 4 OK, and again after the mutants.
    git diff --cached --binary d13b9300 there hashes the same as
    build.patch (18810948…). No commit from d13b9300 to 15dcac12
    touches the 4 paths.
  • I read the whole patch against the brief, decisions 101 and 102, serve's
    flag parsing (packages/webui/src/cli.mjs 16 to 37) and its allowed-user
    check (serve.mjs 120 and 128).
  • Six WebUI test files, a byte-identity check of my own against the base
    script, then 8 mutants of my own (r1/mutants.sh) aimed at sites
    Dewey's 15 don't name. Each edits one site with
    queue-59-review/r1/mut.mjs, runs service.test.mjs and restores from
    the worktree index.

Node v26.8.1, TMPDIR=~/darkwing-scratch/rv83/tmp.

The script

The refusal. [ "$SEND" = 0 ] || [ "$preview" -eq 3 ] || die ... runs
in serve_flags before the value checks, and install calls render
before mkdir, so a refused install creates nothing and leaves an
installed unit alone. The message is serve's own (cli.mjs:37) with the
script's prefix. Running the --send check before "all three or none" is
the right order: an operator who asked for sending learns why it was
refused.

The append. --send is the last flag, after --allow-user. Serve
treats --send as a flag only where a flag is expected; after
--allow-user it's the value (cli.mjs 18 to 20). So --allow-user --send is a read-only Console whose allowed user is the string --send,
and --allow-user --send --send sends. The script parses the same way.

Status. ^ExecStart=.* --allow-user [^ ][^ ]* --send$ agrees with
serve in both cases above. I looked for a read-only unit it could still
read as sending. --allow-user can only appear as the flag itself: the
public host and auth header must start with a letter or digit, and no
value can carry a space. The template's ExecStart is one line
(mosaic-webui.service.in:24). A wrong answer here would also be the
safe one, since it would say a read-only unit sends.

Byte identity. Besides Dewey's 86 argument lists, I rendered 11 with
the base script and the candidate side by side in the same tree
(r1/identity.txt): no flags, each serve flag alone, decision 101's
cutover set (--auth-header X-authentik-username --allow-user jason.woltje), everything together, --allow-user --send, and four
refusals. Output and exit status match on all 11. With --send, the
cutover set renders ... --allow-user jason.woltje --send.

The wording. The header comment, TOOLS.md and the README now say Jason
starts and restarts the Console, and Mos may under decision 102, with
sends then entering the trail as Jason. Any other agent starting it works
around the human proof. The install message says the same more briefly,
ending "no other agent does". There's still no start, stop or restart
verb, and install changed only its message.

Tests and mutants

On the candidate, 04:01:50Z to 04:02:12Z on 2026-10-12
(r1/tests-light.txt): service 15, serve 4, send 13, shell 5,
bus 9 and preview 11, all pass, 0 fail. I didn't run the full gate.
Dewey's is green, Filbert's was running, and Sage reruns it.

Filbert's gate started shortly before my mutants. Mine were single
service.test.mjs runs, 04:02:59Z to 04:03:09Z, in my own worktree and
TMPDIR, with nothing shared with their tree.

Mutant Edit Result
install-mkdir-first mkdir before render killed: the install test, the refusal test
install-refusal-continues install goes on after a refused render killed: the install test, the refusal test
msg-no-mos the install message drops Mos killed: the install --send test
status-send-before-unit-check the send line before the unit check killed: the install --send test
status-reads-template status greps the template, not the unit killed: the install --send test
send-check-inside-block the --send check inside the preview block killed: the refusal test
usage-no-send the usage text drops [--send] survives
send-append-inside-block the append inside the preview block survives, equivalent

send-append-inside-block can't change behaviour, because the check above
it guarantees the preview set whenever SEND is 1. usage-no-send is
note 1.

Notes

1. Nothing tests the usage text. USAGE and --help now name
[--send], and Dewey's identity run lists that as an expected
difference, but no test asserts it. A line in the usage test matching
--allow-user ID \[--send\] would hold it. Cosmetic.

2. The README service paragraph has one unwrapped line. Line 106 is
102 characters: "(lead decisions 62 and 94). Without --send the
unit is read-only. The script takes --send (row 83)". It reads fine
rendered. A follow-up or the landing commit can reflow it.

3. The install message gives the rule, not the reason. The brief asks
each place to say that any other agent starting the Console works around
the human proof. The install message says "no other agent does". I'm fine
with the short form in a terminal message, since the header comment it
points at gives the reason. If Sage wants the brief's words exactly, it's
one line.

Dewey's reviewer points

Allowed users that start with -. I agree it's a follow-up and not
this row. The status check is sound in the meantime, as above. When it's
taken up, I'd refuse a leading - in both the script and serve's USER
pattern, so the two keep parsing the same way. No real allowed user from
decision 101, a username or a 64-character hex uid, starts with one.

The template comment. Agreed. Changing
mosaic-webui.service.in lines 6 to 9 changes every rendered unit, which
this row rules out. It belongs with a template change and the render
tests that pin it, on the follow-up list.

Row 83 round 1 review (Filbert): approve

Candidate: agents/dewey/work/queue-83/candidate-manifest.sha256, sha256 f764cd9e4f8bdcd43c1db387e9408ab0538fb1a63820820806e5b65f93420b66, base d13b9300, request comment 27713, brief blob f8d14d70, packet e1bf582a.

What I checked

  • build.patch applies with git apply --index to a detached worktree of d13b9300, and all 4 manifest entries check OK. From d13b9300 to today's HEAD (15dcac12), none of the four paths has changed, and neither has the template.

  • The change stays inside the brief's files. In the README, only the service paragraph changes, plus one sentence in the --send paragraph of "Message a role". In TOOLS.md, only "Console service" changes.

  • Gate, in that worktree, run in sequence, with TMPDIR in my scratch and DOCKER_HOST pointed at a missing socket. The webui suite is 81/0. All nine scripts/test-*.sh exit 0: auth 15, conductor 17, config 24, discord 66, extension-package 18, foundation 44, queue 27, release 4, task 26. test-queue skipped verify and render --check outside the canonical root. test-release skipped its Docker cases without a daemon. The manifest still checked 4/4 afterwards.

  • Byte identity, my own check. I put the base and candidate scripts side by side in one scratch tree with the template and compared 16 render argument lists without --send. The lists include no flags, each serve flag, the full preview set, a partial preview set, --allow-user --send without --send, and the refusals of a bad host, header, user, port, business and board. Stdout, stderr and exit status are identical in all 16.

  • My own 12 mutants of scripts/webui-service.sh, run in a second worktree against the candidate's service.test.mjs, then restored. The candidate tests kill all 12:

    • the refusal removed, moved after the all-three check, or reworded;
    • the append removed, made unconditional, or moved before the preview flags;
    • --send not setting SERVE_SET, or taking a value;
    • mkdir moved before render;
    • the status regex unanchored (--send$);
    • the status on/off swapped;
    • the install message put back to the base wording.

    The two mutants the brief names, the refusal removed and the append removed, pass the base service.test.mjs (10/10) and fail the candidate's. Afterwards, the mutant worktree checked 4/4 with no unstaged change.

The change

  • The refusal runs before the all-three check. So --send with none, one or two preview flags gets serve's message (cli.mjs:37), with exit 1 and empty stdout. A partial preview set without --send still gets "all three or none". install renders before mkdir, so a refusal creates no directory and leaves an installed unit alone. The test covers both, and f-mkdir-before-render checks it.
  • The append comes after the preview block, so ExecStart ends --allow-user ID --send. With the preview set required, it can't land anywhere else. Without --send, flags is built exactly as before, which the identity check confirms.
  • The status anchor is exact for every unit render writes, as far as I can find. A sending unit always ends --allow-user U --send with U non-empty, so it always matches. A read-only unit ends --auth-header H --allow-user U. For it to match, U would have to be --send and H would have to be --allow-user. The script requires H to start with a letter or digit, so that can't happen. The odd-user test covers --allow-user --send with send both off and on. A hand-edited unit could fool the regex, but the script doesn't claim to read those.
  • The decision 102 wording matches the brief in all four places: the header comment, the install message, TOOLS.md and the README. Jason or Mos starts and restarts the Console, sends from a Console Mos started enter the trail as Jason, and any other agent starting it works around the human proof. There is still no start, stop or restart verb.
  • No test reaches real systemd. Every install uses --no-reload, which never calls systemctl, and every uninstall and status uses the stand-in. /healthz goes to a loopback port that was just closed.

Notes (non-blocking)

N1. In the README service paragraph, line 106 is 102 characters long; the sentence "Without --send the unit is read-only." was put into the middle of a line. The reflow in "Message a role" also leaves a short line ("human, class INFO,"). Both are cosmetic.

N2. I agree with both of Dewey's follow-ups. The template comment (mosaic-webui.service.in lines 6-9) still says only Jason starts the Console, and changing it here would break the byte identity the brief asks for. An allowed user that starts with - should be decided for the script and serve together. Neither blocks this row.

I approve.

Without `--send`, `flags` is built exactly as before, which the identity check confirms. - The status anchor is exact for every unit `render` writes, as far as I can find. A sending unit always ends ` --allow-user U --send` with `U` non-empty, so it always matches. A read-only unit ends `--auth-header H --allow-user U`. For it to match, `U` would have to be `--send` and `H` would have to be `--allow-user`. The script requires `H` to start with a letter or digit, so that can't happen. The odd-user test covers `--allow-user --send` with send both off and on. A hand-edited unit could fool the regex, but the script doesn't claim to read those. - The decision 102 wording matches the brief in all four places: the header comment, the install message, TOOLS.md and the README. Jason or Mos starts and restarts the Console, sends from a Console Mos started enter the trail as Jason, and any other agent starting it works around the human proof. There is still no start, stop or restart verb. - No test reaches real systemd. Every install uses `--no-reload`, which never calls systemctl, and every uninstall and status uses the stand-in. `/healthz` goes to a loopback port that was just closed. ### Notes (non-blocking) N1. In the README service paragraph, line 106 is 102 characters long; the sentence "Without `--send` the unit is read-only." was put into the middle of a line. The reflow in "Message a role" also leaves a short line ("human, class INFO,"). Both are cosmetic. N2. I agree with both of Dewey's follow-ups. The template comment (`mosaic-webui.service.in` lines 6-9) still says only Jason starts the Console, and changing it here would break the byte identity the brief asks for. An allowed user that starts with `-` should be decided for the script and serve together. Neither blocks this row. I approve.

Landed in 1a8ba587 on refactor. Row 83 is done at rev 635 (7a4ca67b).

  • Dewey's round 1, candidate manifest f764cd9e, packet agents/dewey/work/queue-83/, base d13b9300. scripts/webui-service.sh render and install take --send, only with the full preview set, and refuse before writing anything otherwise. With --send the ExecStart ends in --send. Renders without it are byte-identical to the base. status says whether the installed unit sends. The script header, the install message, the README and TOOLS.md say Jason or Mos starts and restarts the Console (lead decision 102), and no other agent.
  • Darkwing approved (27721) and Filbert approved (27722).
  • My gate ran on 23d38413 plus the patch, 04:07:30Z to 04:10:47Z on 2026-10-12. webui 81/0, bus 95/0, cli 114/0, control-board 124/0, and all nine scripts/test-*.sh passed. No drift on the four paths since d13b9300.
  • queue review verify-commit 83 1a8ba587 matches the manifest on all 4 paths.
  • Not taken in this row, on the post-cutover follow-up list: the mosaic-webui.service.in comment at lines 6-9 (its own row, since this one keeps no---send renders byte-identical); an allowed user beginning with -, accepted by the script and by serve; no test for [--send] in the usage text; README line 106 at 102 characters. I kept the short install wording ("no other agent does").
