Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-13_retest-faults.md, section "Seats commit under their own name" (refactor, 18c29c28).

From Jason's PM re-test on 664199f7 (Mos, Vikunja #228). Owner darkwing, after row 103; reviewer dewey.

Problem

A role session runs with HOME set to the run's empty home/ and no git
identity. The coder's first commit failed with "Author identity
unknown", and the coder got past it with git config user.name and
user.email in its clone.

That workaround breaks the next launch. allowed() in
packages/seat/src/checkout.mjs keeps a clone whose config holds any
key outside its list, so the coder's clone will be kept, not
fast-forwarded, from now on. Its config holds both keys today.

A related confusion: the PM said its clone of stack on branch
refactor had no Board code when it did. Nothing tells a seat which
branch and commit its clone holds or when it refreshes.

Owner and reviewer

Owner: Darkwing, after row 103 (both rows touch packages/seat).
Reviewer: Dewey (a sandbox row, decision 130).

Files owned

  • packages/seat/src/sandbox.mjs and whichever launch file passes it
the role and business, with their tests
  • packages/harness/src/bundle.mjs, one prompt line, and its test
  • packages/seat/README.md
  • agents/darkwing/work/queue-<row>/

What ships

  • Every role session's sandbox sets GIT_AUTHOR_NAME,
    GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL, GIT_COMMITTER_NAME and GIT_COMMITTER_EMAIL:
the name is the role, the email <role>@<business>.mosaic.invalid. A
test commits in a sandboxed clone with no config and reads the author
    back.
  • The clone's config needs no new key, so allowed() doesn't change.
  • The bundle prompt gets one line: the clone's branch and the commit it
was at when the session started, that it refreshes only at launch, and
that setting git config in it stops the next launch from updating it.
  • The README says where the identity comes from.

Each new check is shown to fail on a mutant that removes it.

Suites: the seat and harness node suites and every scripts/test-*.sh.

Out of scope

Changing allowed(). Signing. Fixing the coder's existing clone: after
landing, with Mos's go, Sage unsets the two keys so the next launch
updates it again.

Gate

Dewey approves on the row's issue, naming the candidate manifest, and
the suites above pass on Sage's gate rerun. Decision 109 notices go to
Mos before and after. The launch side is live only at a bus restart,
and that needs Mos's go.

Round 1 note for the request above (Darkwing).

Packet: agents/darkwing/work/queue-104/r1/ at b2ae13552. It has build.md, build.patch against 817ddfea6, candidate-manifest.sha256, gate.sh and mutants.py.

The brief lists sandbox.mjs, bundle.mjs and the seat README. Sage approved these extra files in their row 104 decision, so please review them too:

  • packages/seat/src/checkout.mjs and packages/seat/tests/checkout.test.mjs: the commit field. allowed() is byte-identical, and a kept clone gets no commit field and no extra git run.
  • packages/cli/src/launcher.mjs and packages/seat/src/session.mjs: they pass the business and the role instance to sandboxArgv.
  • packages/seat/tests/session.test.mjs and packages/cli/tests/launcher.test.mjs: their tests.

Deviation from the brief, accepted by Sage: the name is the role instance id, not the role, so two instances of one role commit as different authors. build.md and the seat README say so.

Gate on 817ddfea6 is green, including cli 165 and task 98 with Docker up. All 19 of 19 mutants were killed.

Row 104 round 1: Dewey verdict, approve

Candidate manifest f99f2ae780627db489d3d26fc48e8eef59d0994575aa6215225d894f3a7ea044 (11 files), build.patch against BASE 817ddfea6, packet commit b2ae13552. Canonical HEAD f00613106 has no change to any manifest path since 817ddfea6.

What I ran

I made a detached worktree at 817ddfea6 under my scratch. build.patch applied cleanly, and the manifest checked 11/11. I ran each touched test file on its own, in its own session, with TMPDIR in my scratch. Nothing was skipped:

File Result
seat tests/sandbox.test.mjs 7 pass, 0 fail
seat tests/session.test.mjs 9 pass, 0 fail
seat tests/checkout.test.mjs 65 pass, 0 fail
harness tests/bundle.test.mjs 8 pass, 0 fail
cli tests/launcher.test.mjs 17 pass, 0 fail

All 19 anchors in mutants.py match exactly once in my copy. I didn't run the mutants or the full gate; those need the slot, and Sage's gate rerun covers the suites. git diff --check is clean.

The brief

  • The four variables. sandboxArgv adds them as --setenv pairs after HOME and TMPDIR. Its option bag has no default, so a caller with no ids throws. spawnSession is the only caller outside the tests, and the launcher at line 251 is the only caller of spawnSession. No other source file spawns bwrap. The launcher test reads /proc/<runnerPid>/environ for both pm and coder, and the four are the only GIT_* there, so sessionEnv's allowlist keeps any host GIT_* out.
  • A commit with no config. The sandbox check commits in a fresh clone with an empty HOME. It asserts no user.* key in the clone's config, then reads both author and committer back as coder <[email protected]>.
  • The ids. The business file already holds b.id and every launch.instances entry to ID_PATTERN (business.mjs requireId), so gitIdentity's throw can't fire on a valid business file. It rejects newlines and >, which would otherwise break the author line.
  • allowed() unchanged. The diff doesn't touch it. The new kept-clone test logs every git call on PATH. The only call naming the clone is unsafe()'s config --file … --list --null, for both user.name and user.email.
  • The prompt line. It's still one line. The bundle test checks the whole line for updated with a commit, kept, and current with commit: null. The launcher test checks the live prompt's at commit <sha> when this session started. The text matches checkout.mjs: the host fast-forwards a clean clone only at a launch.
  • The README. It says where the identity comes from, notes the instance-id deviation, and explains why the identity isn't in the clone's config.
  • The deviation. The name is the instance id, which Sage accepted. With two instances of one role, it's the only choice that tells their commits apart.

The extra files

  • checkout.mjs. On a fresh clone, HEAD is read inside the temp directory before the rename. A failed read throws a CheckoutError and the existing catch removes the temp directory; the new test asserts the workspace is empty. update() returns null on a failed read rather than "", and the new test pins this. The kept paths return before any new git call.
  • session.mjs and launcher.mjs. They pass the ids straight through. m17 and m18 separate the instance from a fixed or definition role, and m19 does the same for the business.

Notes (none blocking)

a. Harness shells, half checked. build.md says no test runs a live harness's Bash tool. For pi, the source settles it: dist/utils/shell.js:115-123 getShellEnv() returns { ...process.env, … }, and dist/core/tools/bash.js:53,120 use it for every command. The GIT_* variables reach pi's shells. That's from reading the pinned package, not from a live run. I didn't check Claude Code.

b. The address isn't always a hostname. ID_PATTERN allows _ and repeated or trailing dots. A business id like acme_co or a..b gives coder@acme_co.mosaic.invalid or [email protected]. Git and Gitea accept these. A forge hook that validates commit addresses would not.

c. A failed HEAD read after the fast-forward reports "updated". In update(), after is "" when the read fails, so before === after is false even if nothing moved. The commit is still null, so the prompt stays truthful. Only the outcome word could be wrong. This existed before the candidate (the old code trimmed the same failed output), so it's only worth a line if the file is touched again.

Verdict: approve, on manifest f99f2ae780627db489d3d26fc48e8eef59d0994575aa6215225d894f3a7ea044.

Sage (as jarvis): row 104 landed on refactor as 0069949ff and pushed (f00613106..0069949ff). The 11 files match Dewey's approved candidate manifest. Dewey approved in 28293 and confirmed under their own login in 28294.

Sage's gate rerun on f00613106 plus build.patch, in a detached worktree with node_modules linked: all 14 package suites green (cli 165, seat 119, harness 73, queue 156, among others). Scripts auth 15, conductor 17, config 24, discord 66, extension-package 18, foundation 44, queue 28 and task 98 all passed.

test-release failed once, 11/3: healthy activation, pointer written, repeat activation. release.sh activate on its own then exited 0, and a full rerun went 14/0. Row 104 doesn't touch release.sh or the image. That failure is tracked as Vikunja P19 task #258. If it recurs at the re-pin gate, the re-pin stops.

Nothing goes live yet. There's no new copy, no re-pin and no bus restart until Mos gives a separate go (sage-0147). Seat sessions on the live bus keep the pinned 465bbdfbb code until then.

The queue row is done (rev 1052). The landing note I tried to attach went over the 500-character cap and was refused, so this comment is the landing record.

The landing note I tried to attach went over the 500-character cap and was refused, so this comment is the landing record.
