A role clone that is safe for the host's git but sits on another branch, or is dirty, is never fetched at a launch (packages/seat/src/checkout.mjs, update()). Its origin/* refs go stale for as long as the session stays on a work branch, so the session bases new work on an old refactor.

Found 2026-10-14. The coder's clone had origin/refactor at 0c3826910 while refactor was at f7c8537b3 and later. That clone was also kept for config-changed, a [user] section written at 19:53Z on 10-13, before row 104 (#1598) gave sessions their identity through the environment. That part is a one-off the coder fixes in its own clone; it isn't this issue.

Fix: for other-branch and dirty, after every existing safety check passes, the host runs the same fetch it runs today and no merge. Nothing touches HEAD, the index, the working tree or refs/heads. The launch log, the outcome and the bundle's prompt say the clone was fetched and not fast-forwarded.

Queue row 117. Builder Darkwing, reviewer Dewey (host git in a clone the session can write). Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-14_clone-fetch-off-branch.md.

Row 117 round 1: Dewey verdict, approve

Candidate manifest 9fa839edfb2bd04771bbac1913b142cb16aef227a1265120e0d318fb64d6a502 (8 files), build.patch against BASE 559ef2287, packet commit 17d801f48. Canonical HEAD ae2ad7128 has no change to any manifest path since 559ef2287.

What I ran

I made a detached worktree at 559ef2287 under my scratch. build.patch applied cleanly, the manifest checked 8/8, and git diff --check is clean. I ran each touched test file on its own, with TMPDIR in my scratch:

File Result
seat tests/checkout.test.mjs 75 pass, 0 fail
cli tests/launcher.test.mjs 17 pass, 0 fail
harness tests/bundle.test.mjs 8 pass, 0 fail

I checked mutants.py dry against my copy: each of the five anchors matches exactly once in checkout.mjs, and the five are the brief's list (third reason, merge after fetch, no fetch, wrong origin commit, fetch before the gitlink check). In mutants-run.log all five are killed by the tests they should be. I didn't run the mutants or a gate, because those need the slot.

The brief

  • Only other-branch and dirty fetch. update() keeps every earlier reason before it reads the clone's branch: unsafe(), the ls-files gitlink check, then the root read. After that, reason is set only to other-branch (any branch that isn't the root's, including null from symbolic-ref -q on a detached HEAD) or dirty. A failed status still returns kept, status-failed, before any fetch. The fetch is the clean path's own call, with the same arguments, SAFE and environment. With a reason set, the function returns before the merge. unsafe(), allowed(), gitEnv(), SAFE and the sandbox are untouched.
  • Darkwing's reading of "still runs no git". I agree with it. What ships 1 says each earlier check keeps the clone "with no fetch, as today", and at BASE submodule (the gitlink form), root-unreadable and root-detached already ran ls-files in the clone. The candidate adds nothing before those returns. I confirmed that every git call update() makes in the clone goes through inClone(dest), and that the root read uses -C root. So the logging wrapper's filter sees every call in the clone, and the pinned lists ([] for not-a-clone, hooks-present and config-changed; ["ls-files"] for submodule and the two root reasons; ["ls-files","symbolic-ref","status"] for both status-failed cases) are the whole story. m5 fails all five non-empty cases.
  • HEAD, refs/heads, the index and the working tree don't move. The new test fingerprints .git/HEAD, for-each-ref refs/heads, .git/index and every file outside .git, for modified, untracked, staged, another branch and detached. Each case checks the full result with deepEqual and that origin/main is the root's new commit. Status runs with --no-optional-locks before the fetch, so it doesn't rewrite the index. The rigged-clone test has no hunk in the diff.
  • Failed fetch. A dirty clone whose fetch fails is kept, fetch-failed, with its whole fingerprint unchanged and no merge call.
  • Result shape, launcher and bundle. fetched carries reason, the clone's branch (or null), commit from the rev-parse HEAD before the fetch, and origin: { branch, commit } from rev-parse --verify -q after it. The launcher writes checkout-fetched next to checkout-kept, and its test checks both the event and the prompt line in a real launch. The bundle test covers a fetched clone on a branch and a detached one whose origin commit is unreadable. The shared sentence matches What ships 4.

Notes (none blocking)

a. Auto-maintenance after fetch. On git 2.55 a fetch starts git maintenance run --auto --quiet --detach when its thresholds are met. That already applied to the clean path, the session's own commits can trigger it too, and it doesn't change any ref value, the index or the work tree. Turning it off would mean a SAFE change, which the brief rules out, so I mention it only for Sage.

b. The shared sentence. "fetches each clone it can safely run git in" is the brief's wording. A clone kept for root-unreadable, root-detached or status-failed passed the safety checks but gets no fetch. That clone's own entry says "not updated at this launch ()", so the prompt as a whole doesn't mislead.

c. Gate scope. The packet's gate is targeted (seat 130, cli 184, harness 81, conductor 17, extension-package 18), and the brief asks for the full gate. Sage's landing gate under #271 is full, so I'm not holding the verdict on it.

No doc-only findings.

Verdict: approve, on manifest 9fa839edfb2bd04771bbac1913b142cb16aef227a1265120e0d318fb64d6a502.

Landed as e62712e7a on refactor and pushed (ae2ad7128..621a2599b). Queue commit bf93806e7 marks row 117 done at rev 1147.

  • Candidate manifest 9fa839edfb2bd04771bbac1913b142cb16aef227a1265120e0d318fb64d6a502 from Darkwing's round 1 packet (17d801f48), on BASE 559ef2287. No manifest path changed between BASE and the landing target.
  • Dewey approved in 28443.
  • I reran the full gate at ae2ad7128 with the candidate applied. All 23 steps passed (seat 130/0, cli 184/0, harness 81/0), with no flakes and no reruns. queue review verify-commit 117 e62712e7a matches the 8 manifest paths.

Dewey's maintenance note is row 118 (#1612). Going live needs a copy and re-pin; Mos has given the go.
