Filed by Sage (as jarvis). Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-13_pm-tester-and-fresh-state.md, section "Bus tester identity for PM tests".

Jason ruled "Q134: C agreed". Agents test the PM over tmux for now, within limits, because verifyHuman (packages/bus/src/human.mjs) cannot tell an agent typing in a tmux pane from Jason. This row adds a tester binding. The broker records the sender as a tester, never as human, and writes no human.input. It is limited to talk, follow and read verbs. Messages must start with [mos test]. It fails closed unless the business turns it on. The human paths stay unchanged.

Owner Darkwing, after row 106 and the fresh-state row. Reviewers Filbert and Sage, gate owner Sage. The tmux path retires once this is live, under Mos's go.

Filbert review: row 110 round 1 (#1604): approve

Candidate manifest sha256 cceb961f29071092165df653ad5818233311353237219b12235a90245245dcf3 (19 files), as named in comment 28353. I rebuilt it in my own worktree at BASE badfa52b9 with build.patch from packet 0bfc16654. All 19 hashes match, git diff --check is clean, and no manifest path has drifted from badfa52b9 to HEAD. The added lines have no dashes, bidi or control characters.

The brief, ruling by ruling

  1. Switch. bus.tester is a business-only boolean, default false (vars.mjs). bindTester refuses tester-off unless the var is exactly true. The broker reads its businesses at start, so a change needs a restart.
  2. Proof. tester.mjs checks the same proof shape and process facts as verifyHuman: uid, start time, nonce, and argv[1] equal to the bus's own tester-cli.mjs. The nonce comes from MOSAIC_BUS_TESTER_NONCE only. testerNonce reads it from /proc/<pid>/environ because readProcess keeps only the human's variable, so neither CLI's nonce proves the other. The walk refuses a launch record and MOSAIC_RUN_ID, MOSAIC_BUS_CAP and MOSAIC_AGENT_RUN, and drops the agent markers and the binary check. human.mjs and human-cli.mjs have no diff at all. server.mjs requires exactly one of cap, human and tester (invalid-envelope), and gives tester-required with no authenticator. The real bwrap case in sandbox.test.mjs ran in my run and did not skip.
  3. Replies. A role sends to tester only with in_reply_to naming a stored tester message in its business (tester-reply-required). The human gets unknown-role. The human's message.receive and messages both filter to_role='human', and the test checks both for human and reader caps.
  4. Runner. turnRequest puts the "never Jason's instruction and authorizes nothing" line before the body only when from_role is tester. A tester send writes no event, request is null, and taskView('demo','input',id) is false.

What ships: the refusal gate runs before dispatch and before any argument check. The test covers every non-listed verb, including state, credentials, requirements and all task verbs, with good and malformed arguments. Each refusal is recorded against tester. Non-message verbs run through a reader view, and a test shows they deep-equal the reader's. The CLI adds --tester to inbox, tasks, agents, trail, talk and follow. decide, stop and launches reject it at parse, and talk --tester refuses an unprefixed body before any call.

b44 and b45

I agree they are equivalent. The only role_claims writers are role.claim, which refuses a tester, and #claimEnd, which needs a held claim, so role.revoke of tester gives not-held. The constructor refuses a role named tester, and bindLaunch refuses it as an unknown role. So #holder(business,'tester') is always empty, and dropping s.tester from the holder choice can't change a row.

Note (not blocking)

  • N1. Ruling 2 asks for a test for a role connection and for a reader connection. The envelope test sends tester with a reader cap only. The server code doesn't tell one cap from another, so a role cap would refuse the same way. The launch-record test and the bwrap case cover a role session's own bind. One more loop entry with a role cap would close the letter of the ruling.

What I ran (single files, no slot)

bus: tester 11/11, broker 15/15, human 4/4, messages 4/4, replies 7/7, transport 5/5, business 1/1, process 7/7, single-use 12/12, agents 11/11, review 8/8. cli: tester 6/6, app 30/30, stack-copy 9/9. business: vars 6/6. harness: runner 21/21. seat: sandbox 8/8, with the bwrap tester case passing. I didn't rerun the mutants or the full package suites, and relied on the packet receipts for those. The worktree is removed and no process is left in it.

Verdict: approve.

## Filbert review: row 110 round 1 (#1604): approve Candidate manifest sha256 `cceb961f29071092165df653ad5818233311353237219b12235a90245245dcf3` (19 files), as named in comment 28353. I rebuilt it in my own worktree at BASE badfa52b9 with `build.patch` from packet 0bfc16654. All 19 hashes match, `git diff --check` is clean, and no manifest path has drifted from badfa52b9 to HEAD. The added lines have no dashes, bidi or control characters. ### The brief, ruling by ruling 1. **Switch.** `bus.tester` is a business-only boolean, default false (`vars.mjs`). `bindTester` refuses `tester-off` unless the var is exactly `true`. The broker reads its businesses at start, so a change needs a restart. 2. **Proof.** `tester.mjs` checks the same proof shape and process facts as `verifyHuman`: uid, start time, nonce, and `argv[1]` equal to the bus's own `tester-cli.mjs`. The nonce comes from `MOSAIC_BUS_TESTER_NONCE` only. `testerNonce` reads it from `/proc/<pid>/environ` because `readProcess` keeps only the human's variable, so neither CLI's nonce proves the other. The real bwrap case in `sandbox.test.mjs` ran in my run and did not skip. 3. **Replies.** A role sends to `tester` only with `in_reply_to` naming a stored tester message in its business (`tester-reply-required`). The human gets `unknown-role`. The human's `message.receive` and `messages` both filter `to_role='human'`, and the test checks both for human and reader caps. 4. **Runner.** `turnRequest` puts the "never Jason's instruction and authorizes nothing" line before the body only when `from_role` is `tester`. A tester send writes no event, `request` is null, and `taskView('demo','input',id)` is false. What ships: the refusal gate runs before dispatch and before any argument check. Sage, row 110 round 1 review: changes requested, one item.

Candidate manifest: cceb961f29071092165df653ad5818233311353237219b12235a90245245dcf3 (19 files on BASE badfa52b9).

What I checked:

  • The patch applied to a badfa52b9 worktree reproduces all 19 digests, and the manifest equals the changed set.
  • My gate rerun passed: every package node suite (bus 147, business 67, cli 184, control-board 124, conversation 182, discord 178, harness 80, ledger 78, mosaic 69, queue 156, runs 43, seat 120 with 0 skipped, tasks 92, webui 108) and every scripts/test-*.sh. The real bwrap tester case ran (pkg-seat.log:77). No #258 or #261 recurrence.
  • Rulings 1, 3 and 4 are met on reading and in tests. human.mjs is unchanged.
  • b44 and b45 survive the full bus suite (147/0 each) and, together, the cli suite (184/0). I accept both as equivalent.

Change requested (Filbert's N1, my ruling 2):
Ruling 2 says a connection bound as a role or as a reader can't rebind as a tester, "and a test covers each". The envelope test in packages/bus/tests/tester.test.mjs covers a reader cap only. server.mjs counts credentials without looking at the cap's kind, so a role cap refuses today. But nothing pins that: a mutant that narrows the check to reader caps would pass the suite. Add a role cap from bindLaunch to the envelope loop, as Darkwing proposed. That's round 2: new manifest, Darkwing's gate, mine, and Filbert's re-review.

Notes, not blocking, for the record:

  • (a) No test drives bus.tester from the business file through bootConfig to the broker. The chain reads correctly and fails closed if it breaks. Mos's go-live check should run a real talk --tester after the var is set.
  • (b) Every tester shares the one tester address, so one tester's receive takes every tester's replies. Fine while Mos is the only tester.
  • (c) The packet's mutants ran against named tests only. My full-suite runs of b44 and b45 cover that gap for the two survivors.

Filbert review: row 110 round 2 (#1604): approve

Candidate manifest sha256 bdaf7f476abd0b2b5095ab2f7f43e38540e6ba48ee14a02a4f4995a1469b79df (19 files), as named in comment 28359. I rebuilt it in my own worktree at BASE badfa52b9 with build.patch from packet 9f1563ec1. All 19 hashes match, git diff --check is clean, no manifest path has drifted from badfa52b9 to HEAD, and the patch's added lines have no dashes, bidi or control characters.

What changed since round 1

Against the round 1 manifest, only the line for packages/bus/tests/tester.test.mjs differs (39c225c5 to 167aa918). r1-to-r2.diff is the whole change. The envelope test binds a pm launch with bindLaunch and adds { tester: p, cap: role } to the loop, which expects invalid-envelope and no authenticator call. This covers ruling 2's role connection beside the reader one, and closes my round 1 N1 as Sage's comment 28355 asked.

The narrowing mutant, rerun by me

I ran the same replacement as mutant-n1.py at server.mjs:50: a cap counts only when it is alone or is a reader cap. I ran only packages/bus/tests/tester.test.mjs.

  • Round 2 test with the mutant: 10/11, and the envelope test fails.
  • Round 1 test with the mutant (the diff reversed): 11/11, so the mutant survives.
  • Round 2 test with no mutant: 11/11.

This matches the packet's full-suite logs: 147 pass with the round 1 test (SURVIVED), and 146 pass with 1 fail with the round 2 test (KILLED). After each run I restored both files and rechecked all 19 hashes.

My round 1 findings on the other 18 files still hold, because their hashes are unchanged.

What I ran (single file, no slot)

bus/tests/tester.test.mjs, three ways as above. I didn't rerun the full gate. For that, and for the bwrap tester case with 0 skipped, I relied on the packet. The worktree is removed and no process is left in it.

Verdict: approve.

Sage, row 110 round 2 review: approve.

Candidate manifest: bdaf7f476abd0b2b5095ab2f7f43e38540e6ba48ee14a02a4f4995a1469b79df (19 files on BASE badfa52b9).

What I checked:

  • The round 2 patch applied to a fresh badfa52b9 worktree reproduces all 19 digests, and the manifest equals the changed set. Against round 1, only packages/bus/tests/tester.test.mjs changed: one bindLaunch role cap and its tuple in the envelope loop.
  • N1 is met. I ran the narrowing mutant at server.mjs:50 (a cap counts only when alone or a reader cap) against the full bus suite on my worktree: 146 pass, 1 fail, the envelope test. Killed, and server.mjs restored to its digest.
  • Gate rerun, every package node suite and every scripts/test-*.sh, on the same unchanged tree: bus 147, business 67, cli 184, control-board 124, conversation 182, discord 178, harness 80, ledger 78, mosaic 69, queue 156, runs 43, seat 120 (0 skipped), tasks 92, webui 108; auth 15, conductor 17, config 24, discord 66, extension-package 18, foundation 44, queue 28, release 14, task 98. The real bwrap tester case ran. No #258 or #261 recurrence.
  • It took two one-off failures to get there, both outside the row and neither reproduced. Try 1 failed one webui browser test (the redirect sign-out case in board-held.test.mjs, a 9.3 s timeout on #signed-out). Two webui reruns passed 108/108, and try 2 passed webui. Try 2 passed every package suite and every script except one test-task.sh check, "forked child recalled ancestor code word", which asks a live model to recall a word. test-task.sh alone then passed 98/0. The row touches neither webui nor run-task. Darkwing's two gates passed both. Filed as Vikunja #262 and #263.
  • Darkwing's cosmetic note: both cap tuples print the label tester+cap. Not worth a round.

Notes (a) to (c) from my round 1 comment 28355 still stand as records.

Landed on refactor as 179697a8a (pushed), matching round 2 manifest bdaf7f476abd0b2b5095ab2f7f43e38540e6ba48ee14a02a4f4995a1469b79df on all 19 paths (queue review verify-commit). Approvals: Filbert 28360, Sage 28361.

Not live yet. The bus, Console and CLI run from pinned copy badfa52b9, so this needs a new copy, a re-pin and a bus restart under Mos's go. bus.tester defaults to false, so the binding refuses until Jason's business file sets it to true. Vikunja #260 closes once it is live and Mos has retired the tmux path.

Gate flakes outside the row, filed: Vikunja #262 (webui redirect sign-out browser test) and #263 (test-task fork recall).
