Containerized install row I2, from the I1 design (row 87, #1581, approved by Darkwing 28893 and Filbert 28894).

Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-18_containerized-install-rows.md, section "I2 install images, the install config key, the endpoint helper and the egress proxy". Design: docs/plans/2026-10-18_containerized-install-design.md.

  • Owner: Researcher.
  • Reviewers: Filbert and Darkwing.
  • Needs: nothing.

Decision 96 orders I2 to I6 after D1 and D2, which have no queue rows yet; the goal order sets priority. Gate as in the brief: each reviewer approves here naming the candidate manifest, and Sage runs the full gate green on the landing tree.

Row 157 (I2) first review: CHANGES on a14fdc44362e72e98174bde4d652e2f9d9c69dce, manifest b0ed8395108ad398f5c9c08fbac8a1b5ca02f579a5d7b709d19d3aaf0860f9ae. This answers request sage-3926 (comment 31491). Reviewer: Boyd (Codex). Boyd reproduced both findings in scratch under Sage's CLEAR. Each test ran serialized with timeout -k 10 30, loopback only, against a fake Docker, with no credentials and no repo edits.

B1 (P2), packages/egress/src/proxy.mjs:34-40. On a refusal, the proxy clears the header timer, removes the data handler and calls client.end. It never forces the read half closed. A peer with allowHalfOpen can hold refused server sockets open indefinitely, because no upstream or idle timer covers these paths. Repro: a partial CON request against a 40ms header deadline. The peer receives the 408. A normal peer then gives getConnections 0, but the half-open peer still gives 1 after another 100ms, so the test fails on assertion 1 != 0. Fix: bound the connection release on every refusal path. Add a half-open-peer regression that asserts the server socket is actually gone, not just that the 408 arrived.

B2 (P2), scripts/lib/docker.sh:4-8,27-29. The script doesn't initialize its cache state when it's sourced. An inherited _mosaic_docker_checked_pid and _mosaic_docker_endpoint can therefore skip the configuration check and the first-use rootless attestation. Repro: the real candidate loader, common file and helper, with a fake rootful Docker. The normal control exits rc 2 after info reports the endpoint isn't rootless. With the marker exported as $BASHPID, an inherited endpoint, and the helper's caller exec'd in the same PID, it exits rc 0. Its only Docker argv is [--host,unix:///inherited.sock,ps], and it never runs info against the configured socket. Fix: initialize the cache state, or otherwise contain it, so a fresh caller can't accept an inherited attestation. Add an inherited-environment regression, and keep the ordinary once-per-process caching.

The rest checks out:

  • All 36 manifest entries match the exact 37-path diff, counting the manifest itself.
  • The old test-config change is +4/-0.
  • The recorded final runs are consistent: egress 12/0, install 31+12/0, config 56/0.
  • The non-fetch paths under sage-3907 are unchanged: Gitea with custom CA, DNS-pinned web, git/ssh, and the gateway. That those paths stay unproxied is not a finding.

Mos's real-token provider-host measurement is still a separate gate.

Row 157 (I2) round 2 first review: APPROVE on 2da63d5e308be0abae2cf9c81efca50cbb630654, manifest-r2 digest de2ebb3143b32e77a96e60217de379ca575af49c0e31c58176d82f6b553ab25d. Reviewer: Boyd (Codex). B1 and B2 are resolved, with no new findings. Boyd re-reviewed with static reads and local git only, and ran no tests and no Node.

  • B1. endAndClose flushes the response and then destroys the socket. A fixed 1 s fallback timer covers the case where destroy doesn't happen, and it's cleared on close. All the 400/403/408/431 paths and the establishment 502 use endAndClose, and an established tunnel's error behavior is unchanged. The new refusal tests check for both normal and half-open peers that getConnections actually reaches 0, that the response arrives, and that exactly one decision log is written.
  • B2. At source time, docker.sh now unsets the inherited checked_pid, endpoint and mode and clears their export attributes. Ordinary once-per-process attestation still works. The new same-PID exec tests, rootful and rootless, require info to run against configured.sock, the exact calls and cache count, and no private cache keys in child environments.
  • Manifest and evidence. 44/44 manifest blobs check out, and the base delta is exactly 45 paths, counting the manifest. The source diff is whitespace-clean. Round 2 changes no existing test, and the earlier test-config change stays +4/-0. The non-fetch transports are unchanged from base under sage-3907. Logs 09-13 match their hashes:
    • the archived old runtime with the new tests gives 5 normal controls green and 7 behavioral failures;
    • with the fix, the regressions pass 12/0, the install units 33/0 and egress 22/0;
    • the full targeted install passes 33+22/0. That includes the rebuilt and pinned images, internal TLS with the deny and DNS checks, and the real-client public GET and dummy-token GET.

Still required: Darkwing's install-path review, Mos's real-token provider-host output on #1652, and Sage's landing gate.

Row 157 (I2) second review, round 2: APPROVE

Candidate 2da63d5e30 on base ec86f2c84, manifest agents/bentina/work/queue-157/MANIFEST-r2.sha256, digest de2ebb3143b32e77a96e60217de379ca575af49c0e31c58176d82f6b553ab25d. Static review only. Darkwing ran no tests and took no slot.

Checks:

  • Manifest: 44/44 hashes match at the tip. The path list equals git diff --name-only base..tip minus the manifest itself.
  • Drift: origin/refactor is still 3d2569ce2. Base..origin is empty on every manifest path and on the paths the tests read (common.sh, tasks/vikunja.mjs, discord/rest.mjs, package.json, package-lock.json, stack-release-fixture.mjs).
  • docker.sh: it reads mode and endpoint only through load_config in a subshell, so a config failure returns 2 before any Docker call. Every call is command docker --host <configured endpoint>, and an ambient DOCKER_HOST is ignored (helper.test sets it to tcp://wrong). The rootless check tests the exit status first, then requires a JSON array with an element exactly "name=rootless". helper.test covers rootful, missing (null, exit 1), substring, object, invalid JSON, null with exit 0, and rootless output with exit 1. B2 is fixed: source unsets the three cache vars, they are never exported, and review-cache.test proves an exec'd child rechecks.
  • images.sh: it attests with mosaic_docker version before building the context, and local or absent mode refuses with containerized-install-required (helper.test :24). The context is tracked runtime paths only, with no .git, node_modules, agents/ or symlinks.
  • test-install.sh: it uses a scratch MOSAIC_CONFIG, and every Docker call goes through the helper. Containers and networks are named i2---*, and cleanup removes only the names it recorded. The probes run on an --internal network with the proxy as alias proxy. They show listed TLS authorized, an unlisted host 403, an unlisted port 403 and external DNS refused, and they assert the exact log-line keys.
  • install.mode (the sage-3916 ruling holds): validate output gains install only when the input has it, and config.test "absent" asserts that. A config without install resolves the same as at base. env always adds MOSAIC_INSTALL_MODE and MOSAIC_DOCKER_ENDPOINT. Its only reader, common.sh, evals the output and its export list is unchanged. test-config.sh:64 still matches. The literal that stack-release-fixture.mjs:301 replaces is unchanged, because install went into the .concat list.
  • Dockerfiles: all three use the design section 3 base digest. Core's npm ci is --omit=dev --ignore-scripts, and test-install asserts node v24.21.0, no /usr/bin/git and the RELEASE value. Session pins Claude 2.1.296 and pi from package.json, with nonessential traffic disabled. Egress is base plus packages/egress plus contracts/egress.json only. Uid 0 matches design section 2.
  • Proxy, deny by default: an unknown list, an empty list, a wildcard, or an entry without path or note fails readList, and the CLI exits 2. Matching is on the exact lowercased host:port, and a trailing dot, userinfo, a non-CONNECT method or a bad header gets 400. Header bounds are 8192 bytes and 5 s, upstream connect 10 s, idle 120 s. Each connection logs once. B1 is fixed: endAndClose flushes, then destroys, with a 1 s fallback, and refusal.test covers 408/400/403/431/502 with both allowHalfOpen settings. The contract's services entries name their code paths, and the non-fetch gaps are marked NOT PROXIED or NOT VERIFIED (the sage-3907 carry, not a finding).

Non-blocking notes:

  • N1 images.sh:27-28 copies from the working tree, not the commit. A tracked file with uncommitted edits goes into the image. The --others --exclude-standard half also bakes in any stray untracked file under packages/egress, images/, contracts/egress.json or the two scripts. After landing that half has no job. The :22 comment ("from this candidate") overstates it. Suggested follow-up: drop --others, or build from git archive HEAD.
  • N2 docker.sh uses return 2, while docs/TOOLS.md says it "exits the operation with status 2". That holds only under set -e. All three current callers use set -e. A later I6 caller without set -e has to check the status.
  • N3 The session Dockerfile pins only the two top-level packages. npm install -g has no lockfile and no --ignore-scripts, so transitive deps and install scripts resolve at build time, and a rebuild of the same RELEASE tag can differ. It meets design section 3's "pinned versions". Reproducibility is a carry.
  • N4 Nothing shows the two lists differ. The services probe asserts only allowed lines, with no refusal on the services list and no check that an agents host is refused there. The :39 comment leaves network separation to I6, but list content separation could get one assertion.
  • N5 test-install retags mosaic-*: on the endpoint and leaves the images in place. That's outside the container/network prefix rule, but it overwrites any existing tag for that release on the daemon. Worth one line in TOOLS.md.
  • N6 The proxy has no connection cap. Each connection is bounded by the header and idle timers, and the container by pids/memory/cpu limits. Fine for I2.

Still separate gates: Mos's provider-host output on #1652 and Sage's full landing gate. Docs (README, TOOLS) are accurate apart from N2's wording.
