Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-18_role-instance-verb.md (committed with the queue row).

Jason, on P19 332, relayed by Mos in mos-0787: "I want a command and a WebUI surfacing for the modifications".

Mos reads it as: add and change role instances through a mosaic CLI command and a Console view instead of hand-editing the business file, the Q169 pattern. Jason has not confirmed that reading yet.

Hold: the row stays queued and nothing is built until Mos relays Jason confirmation. The chief of staff is out until Jason rules. Acceptance 314 keeps the hand edit until the row lands.

Owner Darkwing after row 155; reviewers Dewey and Filbert.

Created by Sage (T3 1ef1e4f8) as jarvis.

Row 165 round 1 review context (sage-0946), for Dewey and Filbert. The request is comment 29034.

  1. mos-0826 condition 2: your approvals must cover the server-side writer, packages/business/src/instance-settings.mjs and the broker verbs that call it. That means the credential refusal (organization-credentials-out-of-scope), the stale revision (revision-conflict), the human proof (instances and instances.set are human-only and outside ORGANIZATION_KEYS), the assistant protection, the name bounds, and the Console's 503 outcome-unknown on a bad answer shape.
  2. The candidate is a rebase of the e5e3435b content onto 70c9131f0, plus the mos-0832 warn delta (public-delta-e5e3435b.diff, sha256 fa1012af...d176).
  3. The public/ diff to check is agents/darkwing/work/queue-165/public-70c9131f0-warn.diff, sha256 4181b7f649346aa9bb166cd5597e6474fa7011e5f1f9adb1780c0586c648f7a7, +/- digest 939ecd28f80bc2f4a36a9468be0ccc2b0f08c8a630508060572491357f1f9444. Mos gave the decision 123 go on it in mos-0832.
  4. After singles run 2, I added one case to packages/webui/tests/instances.test.mjs: a server with a writer and send off gets 403 and no write. It closes the gap mutant W1 found. The file passed 5/0 on its own, and mutants run 2 killed all 29.

Slot run: singles run 2 passed 1419, failed 0. Packet: agents/darkwing/work/queue-165/ (BUILD.md, build.patch, candidate-manifest.sha256, commit-msg.txt). git apply build.patch on 70c9131f0 rebuilds the candidate, and the manifest names all 24 files.

Filbert review, row 165 round 1: approve

Candidate manifest 89ca3fcf04f8c84d75710b15ef1d3b6b1e4cb0a4c0353b5360c93a51bd40f5b3 (24 paths). I applied build.patch with --index to 70c9131f0. All 24 manifest lines matched, git diff --cached --check is clean, and the diff is +1319 -18 over 24 files. I read it against brief blob b3cf580a, request 29034 and context 29035.

mos-0826 condition 2, the server-side writer

Each item holds in the writer, not only in the Console or the CLI:

  • Credential refusal. instance-settings.mjs:25-27 refuses an added instance, or a change to a definition, that declares credentials, with organization-credentials-out-of-scope. :104-107 refuses a definition change away from one that declares them. Both throw before writer.write, so the bytes stay. A vars or launch change on an instance that holds its binding passes and leaves credentials, tracker and holder as they were. Tests: packages/business/tests/instance-settings.test.mjs:132, :139 and :146.
  • Stale revision. set() passes the revision to the organization writer, which checks it under the lock (organization.mjs:185 and :212). The broker passes revision-conflict through (broker.mjs:1184). Tests: business :178, CLI :101, bus runtime instances-verb.test.mjs:56.
  • Human proof. broker.mjs:1164 refuses instances and instances.set with human-required for any session without s.human, and the actor is s.human, never an argument. The chief of staff's organization.set takes ORGANIZATION_KEYS only, so instance keys get invalid-request before the writer. Test: instances-verb.test.mjs:24 (reader, tester, launch and role sessions, the chief, and forged actor, holder and credentials keys).
  • Assistant protection. An END_PROTECTED definition is refused for add and for a change to it, and any change to a protected instance is refused, with organization-definition-refused. Test: business :159.
  • Name bounds. Instance and definition must match /^[a-z0-9][a-z0-9._-]{0,63}$/ before anything else is read. Test: business :107.
  • 503 outcome-unknown. serve.mjs:308-311: only a refusal with sent === false maps to its status with "Nothing changed."; anything else is 503 outcome-unknown with sent: "unknown". :313-315: a 200 needs a 64-hex revision, a boolean restart, object definitions and instances, and instances[instance], or it is 503 too. Test: packages/webui/tests/instances.test.mjs:132 (missing restart, missing and array definitions, and a lost answer).

The writer also runs validateBusinessDocument, the unknown-model check and each project file's loadProject and resolveInstance before it writes, as mosaic business validate does (business :107 and :168). It logs before and after with the human as actor (business :59 and :83).

The rest

  • Broker. INSTANCE_KEYS is strict (broker.mjs:138, :1170). Errors pass through as code only, BusinessError and unknown-model become invalid-request, and anything else is outcome-unknown.
  • Runtime. instances routes to read and instances.set to set (runtime.mjs:99-100).
  • CLI. Usage errors exit 4 before any bus call, an agent session exits 3, refusals exit 2 with the code and a reason, and scripts/mosaic sends only business instances and business instance to packages/cli (CLI tests :61 to :145).
  • Console. POST /api/instances exists only under --send with the writer bound. It checks the method (405), the user header (401), the exact Origin and Sec-Fetch-Site (403), a JSON object of at most 16 KiB, and strict keys and types (400), all before the bus. The log line names the instance and the outcome, never the vars. public/bus.js escapes through txt/esc, doesn't offer credentialed definitions, and checks the answer's whole shape. Tests: webui :42 (real broker), :101, :119, :132, :151, plus the browser test. The harness tools.test shows no tool sends instances.
  • Decision 123 diff. In the applied tree, git diff --cached of packages/webui/src/public/ hashes to 4181b7f6...a7f7. That is byte-identical to public-70c9131f0-warn.diff, and its +/- lines (without the +++/--- headers) hash to 939ecd28f80bc2f4a36a9468be0ccc2b0f08c8a630508060572491357f1f9444. Those are the digests sage-0948 names.
  • Hash pins. The only 64-hex pin in packages/*/tests or scripts/test-*.sh that names a non-test manifest path is channel-proof.test.mjs:14 on packages/webui/src/bus.mjs. It matches the manifest's bus.mjs digest, and the bump is its own commented hunk.
  • Docs. docs/TOOLS.md, packages/cli/README.md, packages/webui/README.md, packages/bus/README.md, packages/business/README.md and docs/acceptance/314.md match the code: the codes, the exit codes, the 16 KiB bound, the status mapping, and the restart that needs Mos's go or Jason's hand and that no command runs.

Notes (not blocking)

  1. The writer's credential message names the services (instance-settings.mjs:27), but the broker's fail(e.code) (broker.mjs:1185) drops it, so the human sees the generic reason from the CLI and Console tables. That still says why, as the brief asks. The services are on the read (instances lists the credentialed definitions), so I don't count it as a gap.
  2. The reason for organization-definition-refused in packages/cli/src/instances.mjs:19 ("an assistant instance changes only through mosaic limits set...") and packages/webui/src/serve.mjs:282 ("an assistant instance changes only in the Assistant section") also covers adding an instance of an assistant definition, or changing a non-assistant instance to one. In those cases the text names the wrong subject. The CLI README table says "an assistant definition or instance", which fits. Wording only. A follow-up could say "an assistant definition or instance" in both tables.
  3. The webui route test has no explicit revision-conflict case through /api/instances. The 409 mapping is the shared busStatus, and business, CLI and runtime tests cover the conflict itself.

Ran by me

Nothing that needed the slot. I applied the patch, ran sha256sum -c (24/24), hashed the public diff and its +/- lines, and ran greps.

Not mine

Darkwing's runs as BUILD.md records them: singles run 2 (pass 1419, fail 0, with test-config.sh 24, test-queue.sh 28 and test-task.sh 98), and mutants run 2 (29 of 29 killed). The W1 test case in webui/tests/instances.test.mjs came after singles run 2. That file passed singly afterwards (5 pass, 0 fail), and it is in the candidate I checked. I did not rerun any of it. The full gate on the candidate as it stands is Sage's at landing.

Tests: business `:178`, CLI `:101`, bus runtime `instances-verb.test.mjs:56`. - **Human proof.** `broker.mjs:1164` refuses `instances` and `instances.set` with `human-required` for any session without `s.human`, and the actor is `s.human`, never an argument. The chief of staff's `organization.set` takes `ORGANIZATION_KEYS` only, so instance keys get `invalid-request` before the writer. Test: `instances-verb.test.mjs:24` (reader, tester, launch and role sessions, the chief, and forged actor, holder and credentials keys). - **Assistant protection.** An END_PROTECTED definition is refused for add and for a change to it, and any change to a protected instance is refused, with `organization-definition-refused`. Test: business `:159`. - **Name bounds.** Instance and definition must match `/^[a-z0-9][a-z0-9._-]{0,63}$/` before anything else is read. Test: business `:107`. - **503 outcome-unknown.** `serve.mjs:308-311`: only a refusal with `sent === false` maps to its status with "Nothing changed."; anything else is 503 `outcome-unknown` with `sent: "unknown"`. `:313-315`: a 200 needs a 64-hex revision, a boolean `restart`, object `definitions` and `instances`, and `instances[instance]`, or it is 503 too. Test: `packages/webui/tests/instances.test.mjs:132` (missing `restart`, missing and array `definitions`, and a lost answer). The writer also runs `validateBusinessDocument`, the unknown-model check and each project file's `loadProject` and `resolveInstance` before it writes, as `mosaic business validate` does (business `:107` and `:168`). It logs before and after with the human as actor (business `:59` and `:83`). ### The rest - **Broker.** `INSTANCE_KEYS` is strict (`broker.mjs:138`, `:1170`). Errors pass through as code only, BusinessError and `unknown-model` become `invalid-request`, and anything else is `outcome-unknown`. - **Runtime.** `instances` routes to `read` and `instances.set` to `set` (`runtime.mjs:99-100`). - **CLI.** Usage errors exit 4 before any bus call, an agent session exits 3, refusals exit 2 with the code and a reason, and `scripts/mosaic` sends only `business instances` and `business instance` to `packages/cli` (CLI tests `:61` to `:145`). - **Console.** POST `/api/instances` exists only under `--send` with the writer bound. It checks the method (405), the user header (401), the exact Origin and `Sec-Fetch-Site` (403), a JSON object of at most 16 KiB, and strict keys and types (400), all before the bus. The log line names the instance and the outcome, never the vars. `public/bus.js` escapes through `txt`/`esc`, doesn't offer credentialed definitions, and checks the answer's whole shape. Tests: webui `:42` (real broker), `:101`, `:119`, `:132`, `:151`, plus the browser test. The harness `tools.test` shows no tool sends `instances`. - **Decision 123 diff.** In the applied tree, `git diff --cached` of `packages/webui/src/public/` hashes to `4181b7f6...a7f7`. That is byte-identical to `public-70c9131f0-warn.diff`, and its `+`/`-` lines (without the `+++`/`---` headers) hash to `939ecd28f80bc2f4a36a9468be0ccc2b0f08c8a630508060572491357f1f9444`. Those are the digests sage-0948 names. - **Hash pins.** The only 64-hex pin in `packages/*/tests` or `scripts/test-*.sh` that names a non-test manifest path is `channel-proof.test.mjs:14` on `packages/webui/src/bus.mjs`. It matches the manifest's `bus.mjs` digest, and the bump is its own commented hunk. - **Docs.** `docs/TOOLS.md`, `packages/cli/README.md`, `packages/webui/README.md`, `packages/bus/README.md`, `packages/business/README.md` and `docs/acceptance/314.md` match the code: the codes, the exit codes, the 16 KiB bound, the status mapping, and the restart that needs Mos's go or Jason's hand and that no command runs. ### Notes (not blocking) 1. The writer's credential message names the services (`instance-settings.mjs:27`), but the broker's `fail(e.code)` (`broker.mjs:1185`) drops it, so the human sees the generic reason from the CLI and Console tables. That still says why, as the brief asks. The services are on the read (`instances` lists the credentialed definitions), so I don't count it as a gap. 2. The reason for `organization-definition-refused` in `packages/cli/src/instances.mjs:19` ("an assistant instance changes only through `mosaic limits set`...") and `packages/webui/src/serve.mjs:282` ("an assistant instance changes only in the Assistant section") also covers adding an instance of an assistant definition, or changing a non-assistant instance to one. In those cases the text names the wrong subject. The CLI README table says "an assistant definition or instance", which fits. Wording only. A follow-up could say "an assistant definition or instance" in both tables. 3. The webui route test has no explicit `revision-conflict` case through `/api/instances`. The 409 mapping is the shared `busStatus`, and business, CLI and runtime tests cover the conflict itself. ### Ran by me Nothing that needed the slot. I applied the patch, ran `sha256sum -c` (24/24), hashed the public diff and its `+`/`-` lines, and ran greps. ### Not mine Darkwing's runs as BUILD.md records them: singles run 2 (pass 1419, fail 0, with `test-config.sh` 24, `test-queue.sh` 28 and `test-task.sh` 98), and mutants run 2 (29 of 29 killed). The W1 test case in `webui/tests/instances.test.mjs` came after singles run 2. That file passed singly afterwards (5 pass, 0 fail), and it is in the candidate I checked. I did not rerun any of it. The full gate on the candidate as it stands is Sage's at landing.

Row 165 (#1662) round 1 review, Dewey (security)

Request: Gitea 29034, context 29035. Candidate candidate-manifest.sha256
89ca3fcf04f8c84d75710b15ef1d3b6b1e4cb0a4c0353b5360c93a51bd40f5b3 (24 files). I applied
build.patch to a detached worktree at 70c9131f0 and sha256sum -c on the candidate manifest
passed. This round is read-only: I ran no tests. Darkwing's slot run is the run evidence
(singles 1419/0, mutants run 2 29/29 killed). The two findings below are from reading the code
and the test tables. I'll confirm F2's three survivors with mutants once Sage gives a slot.

Verdict: changes (F1 blocks; F2 is a test the go condition asks for).

mos-0826 condition 2: the server-side writer

Item Where Result
Credential refusal instance-settings.mjs definitionFor (new definition), and the old-definition check in change Holds. All three mos-0823 behaviors have a test and a mutant (C1-C3). credentials, holder and tracker aren't writer keys, so the Console and broker key lists refuse them first (W4, H2).
Stale revision organization.mjs write compares the caller's revision under the lock, then again before the rename Holds. R1 covers the writer passing the caller's revision. N1 notes the refusal order.
Human proof broker.mjs organization branch: !role && !s.human refuses instances and instances.set; reader and tester sessions bind with human: false (broker.mjs:504, :508) Holds. instances-verb.test.mjs refuses agent, chief of staff, reader and tester on both verbs; organization.set can't reach the verbs (keys, role ? "limits.set"). Harness tools test and K1-K3 hold the chief of staff's tool off them.
Assistant protection definitionFor refuses an END_PROTECTED definition; change refuses any change to an instance whose definition is END_PROTECTED, vars and launch included Holds. Tested both ways, P1 and P2.
Name bounds id() = ID_PATTERN (^[a-z0-9][a-z0-9._-]{0,63}$) on instance and definition F1: human and tester pass the writer and validate, and the broker refuses them at load.
503 outcome-unknown on a bad answer shape serve.mjs instanceSend, after the bus call The check is right. F2: only the definitions part is pinned.

F1 (blocking): the writer adds an instance the bus refuses to load

instanceSettings().set accepts instance: "tester" or instance: "human". Both match
ID_PATTERN, and validateBusinessDocument only runs requireId on an instance name
(business.mjs:86). The broker refuses either name when it loads a business:

// packages/bus/src/broker.mjs:228-229
for (const role of Object.keys(b.roles)) {
  if (!id(role) || role === 'human' || role === 'tester') fail('invalid-business');

bus/tests/tester.test.mjs:61-62 pins that refusal (roles = { ...roles, tester: roles.pm }
throws invalid-business).

Failure: the human adds tester (definition merge-gate) from the Console or with
mosaic business instance add acme tester --definition merge-gate --revision …. The write
succeeds, validate exits 0, and the answer says "Restart needed". The restart then fails
closed with invalid-business, and the bus stays down until someone hand-edits the business
file. The writer's comment says it runs "the checks mosaic business validate runs, before the
writer publishes anything", but the bus's own load check is stricter than validate here.

name.set already refuses these two words as names (broker.mjs:2123, name-is-instance), so
the bus treats them as reserved everywhere else.

Fix I'd accept: the writer refuses human and tester as an instance id, with a named code
(for example organization-reserved-instance) or invalid-request, plus a test for each word
and a mutant. Putting the rule in validateBusinessDocument would also close the hand-edit path,
but that widens the row to every business file; that choice is Darkwing's and Sage's. Either
way the CLI and Console need a reason for a new code (REASONS, INSTANCE_REASONS) and
webui/src/bus.mjs a STATUS entry, which moves the channel-proof pin again.

F2 (change): three of the five 503 shape checks have no test

instanceSend answers 503 outcome-unknown unless all five hold:

!/^[a-f0-9]{64}$/.test(result?.revision ?? '') || typeof result.restart !== 'boolean' ||
!object(result.definitions) || !object(result.instances) || !result.instances[instance]

The cases in webui/tests/instances.test.mjs:138-141:

  • { revision: REV, instances: {} }: fails on restart first, then definitions;
  • { revision, restart, instances: { 'gate-1': {} } }: fails on definitions (W7);
  • the same with definitions: []: fails on definitions.

No case has a bad revision with everything else good, a non-boolean restart with
definitions present, or a good answer that lacks instances[instance]. So dropping the
revision test, the restart test or the instances[instance] test leaves every test green, by
my reading. The page's own check (public/bus.js:712, instanceAnswer) tests the revision,
restart and that both maps are objects, but not instances[instance]. So if the server's
instances[instance] test were dropped, an answer without the instance would show "Added …" or
"Changed …" on the page. G4 covers only definitions on the page side.

mos-0826 ties Mos's go to reviewer coverage of this 503, so I'm asking for one case per check,
each with only that one part wrong:

  1. revision: 'x' (restart, definitions, instances with gate-1 all good);
  2. restart: 'yes';
  3. instances: {} with restart and definitions good.

This is test-only, so the public/ +/- digest stays 939ecd28. The same gap is smaller on
GET /api/bus/instances (serve.mjs, busRead): the one refusal case lacks a revision; an
answer without instances or definitions isn't tested. I'd add those two in the same pass,
but I don't block on them.

Notes (not blocking)

  • N1, refusal order on a stale revision. set reads the current document, runs its own
checks, and only writer.write compares the caller's revision. A stale add of a name someone
else has since added answers organization-instance-exists, not revision-conflict. Nothing
is written either way, and launch-settings.mjs and plugin-settings.mjs work the same, so
this matches the pattern. A follow-up could refuse a stale revision first in all three.
  • N2, a new instance key can take a held seat name. name.set refuses a name equal to an
instance key, but this writer can add an instance whose key equals a name some other instance
already holds. After the restart, message.send to that word goes to the new instance, since
the key wins (broker.mjs:1710-1717). Row 141 recorded that precedence on purpose, and the
writer can't see the bus store's names. Now that adding an instance is one click, the
instances read could list held names, or the broker could refuse such an add, since the
verb runs in the broker. That's a follow-up row, not this one.
  • N3. The broker maps every organization-* code with fail(e.code) and drops the message,
so the credential refusal's service list ("reviewer declares gitea and vikunja credentials")
reaches neither the CLI nor the Console. They show their own REASONS text instead, which
matches BUILD.md's description of the CLI and Console output.

Other checks

  • Frozen files: human.mjs b995fc5c, human-cli.mjs 269c3a66 and transport.mjs 5129c44b
match their channel-proof pins. webui/src/bus.mjs is dfbc2289, the new pin, in its own
    commented hunk.
  • public/: git diff 70c9131f0 -- packages/webui/src/public/ on my tree has +/- digest
    939ecd28…9444, the same as public-70c9131f0-warn.diff (sha256 4181b7f6…a7f7), which is
the diff Mos's mos-0832 go names.
  • I grepped tests for 64-hex strings next to a manifest path. The only hit is
    webui/tests/service.test.mjs:21, a fixture UID, not a pin.
  • Console route: 401 before the Origin check, exact Origin, Sec-Fetch-Site: same-origin,
body() with a 16 KiB limit refusing a non-object, strict keys, and --send plus
instancesWrite plus the public name, all required (W1-W5). The log line quotes the instance
and cuts it to 200 characters, and it never logs vars.
  • CLI: --vars reads a file the human names. A JSON error message can quote part of that file
to the human's own terminal, which I'm fine with.

Row 165 (#1662) round 2 review, Dewey (security)

Request: Gitea 29040. Candidate candidate-manifest.sha256
4bcd6a2ef1c52f5e83bc3aa5412cca7ea13d884f03a6fa481a93e4210d28fa5e (24 files), build.patch
cc886c47…9555. I applied build.patch to a fresh detached worktree at 70c9131f0, and
sha256sum -c on the manifest passed. I ran no tests, since Sage gave me no slot for 165
(sage-0951). The run evidence is Darkwing's round 2 slot run: singles 163 files with pass 1419
and fail 0, and mutants 37 of 37 killed. Those logs are in Darkwing's scratch, which I don't read.
The mutant ties below come from BUILD.md's table and from my own reading of each case.

Verdict: approve.

What changed since round 1

I compared each of the 24 files byte by byte against my round 1 tree (89ca3fcf). The seven that
changed are the seven Darkwing named, and no file was added. webui/src/bus.mjs is still
dfbc2289, the channel-proof pin. The public/ +/- digest is still 939ecd28…9444, so mos-0832
stands. No manifest path changed between 70c9131f0 and HEAD; only SESSIONS.md, QUEUE.md and
queue.json moved.

F1: resolved

instance-settings.mjs set now refuses human and tester with invalid-request. The check
comes right after the id() and op check and before writer.read, so it covers both add and
change and nothing is read or written. ID_PATTERN is lowercase-only, so Human and TESTER
already fail id(). In the broker's organization branch, invalid-request maps to
fail("invalid-request"), the same path as the other shape refusals. The test calls refuses()
for each name, and refuses() also asserts the file bytes are unchanged. Without the check, an
add with merge-gate would write, so mutant F1 has to die. The business README states the rule.

The cost Darkwing names is real but not blocking. The human sees invalid-request with the
generic text, because the broker drops the writer's message (my N3). Choosing invalid-request
over a new code keeps the channel-proof pin where it is, and I accept that trade.

F2: resolved

There are three new cases in webui/tests/instances.test.mjs. Each one has a single part wrong
and the other four parts of the serve.mjs:314 check good:

Case Only wrong part Check that catches it Mutant
revision: 'x' revision the 64-hex regex F2a
restart: 'yes' restart typeof … !== 'boolean' F2b
instances: {} instances[instance] !result.instances[instance] F2c

With any one check gone, its case reaches the 200 path and fails the 503 assert, so each mutant
is tied to exactly one case. The two GET cases (an answer without instances, and one without
definitions, both 502) cover my optional note at serve.mjs:91, with mutants E1 and E2.

Filbert note 2 wording

The organization-definition-refused text changed in both tables (CLI REASONS and Console
INSTANCE_REASONS). The CLI test pins it, and so does a real-broker case in the route test.
Neither text names a variable value or a file path.

Other checks

  • Grep for 64-hex pins in tests next to a round 2 file: no hits.
  • Follow-ups listed in BUILD.md "Round 2": N1 (stale revision first), N2 (a new instance key can
take a held seat name), N3 and Filbert note 1 (the broker drops the writer's message). Moving
the human/tester rule into validateBusinessDocument is left for Sage to place.

Filbert review, row 165 round 2: approve

Candidate manifest 4bcd6a2ef1c52f5e83bc3aa5412cca7ea13d884f03a6fa481a93e4210d28fa5e (24 paths), build.patch cc886c4751073db6a5a023dca80d2fe17f807cef8ec541320045434f6d879555. I applied it with --index to 70c9131f0. All 24 manifest lines matched, git diff --cached --check is clean, and the diff is +1343 -18 over 24 files.

What changed since round 1

I compared the per-file digests in request 29034 with those in 29040. The 29034 list hashes to 89ca3fcf..., the manifest I approved in 29036. Exactly 7 files differ:

  • business/README.md
  • business/src/instance-settings.mjs
  • business/tests/instance-settings.test.mjs
  • cli/src/instances.mjs
  • cli/tests/instances.test.mjs
  • webui/src/serve.mjs
  • webui/tests/instances.test.mjs

The other 17 are byte-identical to round 1, so my round 1 checks carry over. That includes the mos-0826 condition 2 items in the writer, the broker and the route.

I couldn't rebuild the round 1 tree: its build.patch was replaced, and I didn't find its blobs in the object store. So for the 7 files I read the round 2 content against BUILD.md's "Round 2" account, not against a line-by-line interdiff.

The round 2 changes

  • Dewey F1 (human and tester). instance-settings.mjs:81-85 refuses an instance named human or tester with invalid-request. It runs after the id and op checks and before writer.read, so nothing is read or written. The reason holds: the broker refuses such a business at load (broker.mjs:229, role === 'human' || role === 'tester' gives invalid-business), and tester.test.mjs:53 pins the tester half. Tests: instance-settings.test.mjs:125-127, one refuses call for each name. The README bullet matches.
  • Dewey F2 (the 503 shape checks). webui/tests/instances.test.mjs:144-146 add revision: 'x', restart: 'yes' and instances: {}. Each case is wrong in exactly one part, with the other three fields valid, so each one isolates its check at serve.mjs:314. The GET read adds a case without instances and one without definitions at :166-170, each expecting 502 from the serve.mjs:91 check.
  • My note 2 (the definition-refused wording). Both tables now say the command or form "neither adds nor changes an assistant, and moves no instance to the assistant definition" (cli/src/instances.mjs:19-20, serve.mjs:282). That covers all three cases the writer refuses. cli/tests/instances.test.mjs:110 and the real-broker case at webui/tests/instances.test.mjs:91 pin the new text with an anchored regex on an add of asst-2 with --definition assistant.
  • Mutants. BUILD.md's round 2 table maps F1, F2a, F2b, F2c, E1, E2, N2a and N2b to the cases above. I didn't read their logs: they are under ~/darkwing-scratch, which I don't read.

A correction to my round 1 note 3

In 29036 I wrote that the Console route test had no explicit revision-conflict case. webui/tests/instances.test.mjs:90 has one through a real broker: a stale revision gets 409 revision-conflict and the bytes are kept. Darkwing says that line was already in round 1. I can't check round 1's bytes, but I have no reason to doubt it, so the note was my miss. I withdraw it.

Unchanged digests

  • Public diff. git diff --cached of packages/webui/src/public/ hashes to 4181b7f6...a7f7, byte-equal to public-70c9131f0-warn.diff. Its +/- digest (without the +++/--- headers) is still 939ecd28f80bc2f4a36a9468be0ccc2b0f08c8a630508060572491357f1f9444.
  • Hash pin. webui/src/bus.mjs is dfbc2289...9a4c in both rounds, and channel-proof.test.mjs:18 pins that value.
  • Base drift. From 70c9131f0 to HEAD a618528b2, no manifest path changed.

Follow-ups (not blocking, as BUILD.md lists them)

  • My note 1 and Dewey's N3: the broker drops the writer's message, so the human sees the code and the table reason only. For the human/tester refusal, that is a bare invalid-request with the generic reason.
  • Dewey's N1 and N2.
  • Where the human/tester rule should live beyond this writer (validateBusinessDocument), for Sage to place.

Ran by me

Nothing that needed the slot. I applied the patch, ran sha256sum -c (24/24), compared the per-file digests of the two requests, hashed the public diff, and ran greps.

Not mine

Darkwing's round 2 slot run (sage-0950) as BUILD.md records it: singles over 163 files, every rc 0, awk pass 1419, fail 0; mutants 37 of 37 killed. I did not rerun or read those logs. The full gate is Sage's at landing.

## Filbert review, row 165 round 2: approve Candidate manifest `4bcd6a2ef1c52f5e83bc3aa5412cca7ea13d884f03a6fa481a93e4210d28fa5e` (24 paths), `build.patch` `cc886c4751073db6a5a023dca80d2fe17f807cef8ec541320045434f6d879555`. Verdict: approve, round 3, candidate manifest e30b54da42d5552b7320a458a5f1c808ac2c5ae6027f554ddc01e3ffc844f580.

Row 165 (#1662) round 3 review, Dewey (security)

Round 3 rebases round 2 onto 4f45cadc0, where row 156 landed (sage-0957, sage-0958). Candidate
candidate-manifest.sha256 e30b54da42d5552b7320a458a5f1c808ac2c5ae6027f554ddc01e3ffc844f580
(24 files), build.patch cefce7a49c3bbe7863a68449a5eb7f74af0cefbbb5d1d8fb55c3be416d5e08aa.
git apply --check and git apply --index on a fresh detached worktree at 4f45cadc0 were
clean, with no 3-way merge, and sha256sum -c on the manifest passed. I ran no tests, because
165 is not my slot work. The run evidence is Darkwing's round 3 slot run (sage-0959): 163 files
singly with pass 1436 and fail 0, and 37 of 37 mutants killed. Those logs are in Darkwing's
scratch, which I don't read.

Verdict: approve. The rebase is confirmed.

The rebase, checked per file

  • Patch body. Apart from the index lines and the @@ offsets, the r3 build.patch is
line-for-line the same as r2 (cc886c47…). The file list is the same.

  • Per-path deltas. For each of the 24 paths, I took the sha256 of the +/- lines from
git diff BASE -- FILE, without the +++/--- headers. BASE is 70c9131f0 for my r2 tree
and 4f45cadc0 for r3. All 24 digests are equal.

  • The 20 paths 156 doesn't touch are byte-equal to r2.

  • The 4 paths 156 shares differ in bytes only by 156's lines. Their delta prefixes match
    Darkwing's table:

    Path Delta prefix
    docs/TOOLS.md b74e6dd8
    bus/src/broker.mjs 446ffd46
    bus/src/runtime.mjs 3bb624f8
    cli/README.md bf46a856
  • webui/src/public/bus.js is byte-equal to r2. The public/ +/- digest is still
939ecd28…9444, so mos-0832 still covers it.

  • Hash pins. webui/src/bus.mjs is still dfbc2289. All four channel-proof.test.mjs
baselines match the r3 tree. The only other 64-hex pins in tests are a DDL hash in
thread-migration.test.mjs and a UID in service.test.mjs, and neither one names a 165 path.

  • Drift. No manifest path changed between 4f45cadc0 and HEAD e8b09735a.

Where 156 meets 165

I read 156's lines in the four shared files against this row's. In broker.mjs, 156 adds
#received, landHolders, landRelease, #held and a landing-turn case in #requestUsage.
This row adds INSTANCE_KEYS and the instances / instances.set cases in the organization
branch, and no function holds lines from both rows. In runtime.mjs, 156 adds two launch-API
verbs and this row adds the instanceSettings writer and two organization verb lines.

Darkwing's landHolders reading holds. An instance this row adds is unknown to the broker until
a bus restart, so it can't hold a merge decision before then. The "no restart" receipt still
rests on check() reloading the business file at each launch check. That reload is still the
first statement of check() in cli/src/launcher.mjs: line 226 in my tree, and Darkwing cites
227.

Carried from round 2

F1 and F2 stay resolved, since none of their lines changed. These follow-ups are unchanged:

  • N1: the stale revision is checked first.
  • N2: a new instance key can take a held seat name.
  • N3 / Filbert note 1: the broker drops the writer's message.
  • Moving the human/tester rule into validateBusinessDocument, left for Sage to place.
Verdict: **approve**, round 3, candidate manifest `e30b54da42d5552b7320a458a5f1c808ac2c5ae6027f554ddc01e3ffc844f580`. # Row 165 (#1662) round 3 review, Dewey (security) Round 3 rebases round 2 onto 4f45cadc0, where row 156 landed (sage-0957, sage-0958). Filbert review, row 165 round 3: approve

Candidate manifest e30b54da42d5552b7320a458a5f1c808ac2c5ae6027f554ddc01e3ffc844f580 (24 paths), build.patch cefce7a49c3bbe7863a68449a5eb7f74af0cefbbb5d1d8fb55c3be416d5e08aa on 4f45cadc0. Per sage-0959 I reviewed only the rebase delta from round 2 (4bcd6a2e, my 29044).

What I checked

I built both rounds in fresh worktrees:

  • round 3: build.patch on 4f45cadc0;
  • round 2: build-r2.patch (cc886c47) on 70c9131f0.

Both manifests match their trees. Round 3's git diff --cached --check is clean, at +1343 -18 over 24 files, the same as round 2. Both manifests list the same 24 paths.

  • The 20 paths row 156 doesn't touch. All are byte-equal between the round 2 and round 3 trees (cmp).
  • The 4 shared paths. On each, the +/- lines against each round's base (headers excluded) hash the same, with the same hunk count:
Path Digest, both rounds Hunks
docs/TOOLS.md b74e6dd8 2
packages/bus/src/broker.mjs 446ffd46 2
packages/bus/src/runtime.mjs 3bb624f8 3
packages/cli/README.md bf46a856 1

This row's lines are unchanged.

  • public/. The +/- digest against 4f45cadc0 is still 939ecd28f80bc2f4a36a9468be0ccc2b0f08c8a630508060572491357f1f9444.

Where the two rows meet

  • broker.mjs. This row's hunks sit at :137-138 (INSTANCE_KEYS) and :1202 (the organization branch: the verb list at :1205, then the strict keys for instances.set at :1216). Row 156's landHolders and landRelease (:992, :1007) and its landing-turn case (:1270) are separate functions, or a separate branch.
  • runtime.mjs. This row adds an import (:12), and both rows edit startBroker, in different statements. Inside it this row adds the instances setup (:70-71) and the two verb routes (:99-100). Row 156 adds two launch-API entries (:202-204), about 100 lines further down.
  • The launcher reload. BUILD.md's "no restart" reading still holds: loadBusiness runs at every launch check (packages/cli/src/launcher.mjs:227).
  • The added instance before a restart. BUILD.md (:429-431) says an instance this row adds can't hold a merge decision before a bus restart. I read landHolders (broker.mjs:992) and its #held filter (:1037), and nothing there contradicts that. The claim rests on the broker loading roles only at start, which I didn't trace further this round.

Hash pins and drift

  • Hash pins. In the round 3 tree, the only 64-hex test pin on a manifest path is still channel-proof.test.mjs on packages/webui/src/bus.mjs, dfbc2289.... It matches, and that file is one of the 20 byte-equal paths.
  • Base drift. From 4f45cadc0 to HEAD e8b09735a, no manifest path changed.

Ran by me

Nothing that needed the slot. I built two worktrees, ran sha256sum -c on both manifests, and ran cmp and the per-file +/- digests, plus greps.

Not mine

Darkwing's round 3 slot run (sage-0959), as BUILD.md records it: 163 singles exit 0, awk pass 1436, fail 0. The 17 more than round 2 are row 156's tests. All 37 mutants are killed. I did not rerun or read those logs. The full gate is Sage's at landing.

## Filbert review, row 165 round 3: approve Candidate manifest `e30b54da42d5552b7320a458a5f1c808ac2c5ae6027f554ddc01e3ffc844f580` (24 paths), `build.patch` `cefce7a49c3bbe7863a68449a5eb7f74af0cefbbb5d1d8fb55c3be416d5e08aa` on `4f45cadc0`. Per sage-0959 I reviewed only the rebase delta from round 2 (`4bcd6a2e`, my 29044). ### What I checked I built both rounds in fresh worktrees: - round 3: `build.patch` on `4f45cadc0`; - round 2: `build-r2.patch` (`cc886c47`) on `70c9131f0`. Both manifests match their trees. Round 3's `git diff --cached --check` is clean, at +1343 -18 over 24 files, the same as round 2. Both manifests list the same 24 paths. - **The 20 paths row 156 doesn't touch.** All are byte-equal between the round 2 and round 3 trees (`cmp`). - **The 4 shared paths.** On each, the +/- lines against each round's base (headers excluded) hash the same, with the same hunk count: | Path | Digest, both rounds | Hunks | |---|---|---| | `docs/TOOLS.md` | `b74e6dd8` | 2 | | `packages/bus/src/broker.mjs` | `446ffd46` | 2 | | `packages/bus/src/runtime.mjs` | `3bb624f8` | 3 | | `packages/cli/README.md` | `bf46a856` | 1 | This row's lines are unchanged. - **public/.** The +/- digest against `4f45cadc0` is still `939ecd28f80bc2f4a36a9468be0ccc2b0f08c8a630508060572491357f1f9444`. ### Where the two rows meet - **broker.mjs.** This row's hunks sit at `:137-138` (`INSTANCE_KEYS`) and `:1202` (the organization branch: the verb list at `:1205`, then the strict keys for `instances.set` at `:1216`). Row 156's `landHolders` and `landRelease` (`:992`, `:1007`) and its landing-turn case (`:1270`) are separate functions, or a separate branch. - **runtime.mjs.** This row adds an import (`:12`), and both rows edit `startBroker`, in different statements. Inside it this row adds the `instances` setup (`:70-71`) and the two verb routes (`:99-100`). Row 156 adds two launch-API entries (`:202-204`), about 100 lines further down. - **The launcher reload.** BUILD.md's "no restart" reading still holds: `loadBusiness` runs at every launch check (`packages/cli/src/launcher.mjs:227`). - **The added instance before a restart.** BUILD.md (`:429-431`) says an instance this row adds can't hold a merge decision before a bus restart. I read `landHolders` (`broker.mjs:992`) and its `#held` filter (`:1037`), and nothing there contradicts that. The claim rests on the broker loading roles only at start, which I didn't trace further this round. ### Hash pins and drift - **Hash pins.** In the round 3 tree, the only 64-hex test pin on a manifest path is still `channel-proof.test.mjs` on `packages/webui/src/bus.mjs`, `dfbc2289...`. It matches, and that file is one of the 20 byte-equal paths. - **Base drift.** From `4f45cadc0` to HEAD `e8b09735a`, no manifest path changed. ### Ran by me Nothing that needed the slot. I built two worktrees, ran `sha256sum -c` on both manifests, and ran `cmp` and the per-file +/- digests, plus greps. ### Not mine Darkwing's round 3 slot run (sage-0959), as BUILD.md records it: 163 singles exit 0, awk pass 1436, fail 0. The 17 more than round 2 are row 156's tests. All 37 mutants are killed. I did not rerun or read those logs. The full gate is Sage's at landing.

Row 165 round 3: correction to my review 29052. The verdict stays approve on e30b54da42d5552b7320a458a5f1c808ac2c5ae6027f554ddc01e3ffc844f580.

Correction (2026-10-19, after Darkwing's correction and Filbert 29053)

Two statements above are wrong. The verdict doesn't change.

  • The reload line. It is launcher.mjs:227, as Darkwing wrote, not 226. Line 226 is the
check() signature. I misread my own sed -n '220,232p' output.

  • runtime.mjs. Lines from both rows sit inside startBroker, so "no function holds lines
from both rows" holds for broker.mjs only. The two rows' lines are separate statements:

    • 165 at :70-71: the instances writer.
    • 165 at :99-100: the instances and instances.set dispatch.
    • 156 at :202-204: landHolders and landRelease in the launch API.

156's lines don't read instances, and 165's lines don't read anything 156 adds.

Row 165 round 3: correction to my review 29052. The verdict stays **approve** on `e30b54da42d5552b7320a458a5f1c808ac2c5ae6027f554ddc01e3ffc844f580`. ## Correction (2026-10-19, after Darkwing's correction and Filbert 29053) Two statements above are wrong. Landed on refactor as 9466f3e5e, pushed e8b09735a..9466f3e5e under Mos's standing push go for #314 rows. Queue row 165 is done (rev 1913).

  • Candidate: Darkwing's round 3, manifest e30b54da...f580, a rebase of round 2 onto 4f45cadc0 (row 156). Reviewers: Dewey approve 29052, Filbert approve 29053.
  • Seat run on 4f45cadc0: 1436/0 singles, 37/37 mutants killed.
  • Sage gate on e8b09735a: GATE_PASSED 25/25, packages 2282/0, queue node 156/0, script selftests 422/0, 23:59:13Z to 00:05:35Z. The candidate was rebased onto 50a57e454 over two SESSIONS-only commits before landing, and the manifest still checked OK.
  • public/: the +/- digest at landing is 939ecd28...9444, the diff Mos's decision 123 go covers (mos-0832).
  • Correction from Darkwing, packets only: in runtime.mjs both rows 156 and 165 add separate statements inside startBroker, so "no function has lines from both rows" holds for broker.mjs only. The merged code is unchanged and the gate ran on it.

Nothing live. The running bus and Console stay on copy 52f35e7a0 until a re-pin. P19 367 still tracks whether role credentials bind through this command; until Jason decides, the writer refuses a definition that declares credentials.
