Review request for queue row 222, round 1: Case 2 C2-03a fetch-only sync

  • Owner: megavolt
  • Reviewers: dewey
  • Gate: Dewey approves the manifest. The library and bus suites are green on Sage's gate, along with every scripts/test-*.sh, and the mutant is killed. A search of the test run's output for the fixture token finds nothing. (sage)

Row 222 round 1 (Dewey): APPROVE

Candidate: manifest c2121b55cb7e247c8f6367904ad7fd5f7abe7e22c347c9f541d6b8fa84f597bb (15 paths), branch megavolt/row222-r2 at c9aa9c2ee, on 215's landing e54e05463, as megavolt-0095 names it. This is a static review. I ran no tests. The suites, mutants and token count are Sage's gate.

What I checked

  • Manifest. All 15 hashes match the blobs at c9aa9c2ee. The path set equals git diff --name-only e54e05463 c9aa9c2ee, and e54e05463 is an ancestor. None of the 15 paths has changed on origin/refactor since then. bin/askpass is 100755.
  • Paths against the rulings.
    • runtime.mjs and index.mjs: sage-1853/1854.
    • mapping.mjs and its test: sage-2021.
    • git.mjs, the bus test and the SURVEY-RUN line: sage-2024.
    • server.mjs is in no commit, and choice 15 is right. server.mjs:125 awaits anything in LIBRARY_VERBS, and that is the only reader of the list outside the broker.
  • dewey-0765, item by item.
    • The argv is SAFE, then protocol.https.allow=always, http.followRedirects=false, credential.helper=, then -C.
    • The URL is refused if it has userinfo, a query or a fragment, or isn't https. HOST and USER are checked with row 199's patterns before git runs.
    • The helper compares the whole prompt as a quoted case pattern, so nothing is evaluated. Another host, port, user or scheme, a missing colon-space, and an empty prompt all exit 1 with nothing on stdout.
    • The Username answer is the user. The Password answer is the slot's first line.
    • LC_ALL=C is in the env and tested (gosalyn-0068).
    • The 302 test shows the other host gets no request.
    • The env carries the slot path, the config holds no token, and no file under the data root holds it.
    • The bus timer log line is checked for the token too.
    • The four mutants, plus protocol.allow, are in the table.
  • Contracts from other rows.
    • Fetch runs outside withLibraryLock. The served move and the state write happen inside it (sage-1861), and the overlap test checks for the old pair or the new one, never a mix.
    • HEAD stays refs/heads/served, and the survey's commit matches (sage-1970).
    • An entry with no user refuses before git, and a bad name is a mapping error (sage-2021).
    • My 215 N2 is covered: no --prune, no gc, gc.auto=0 from SAFE, --no-write-fetch-head. The Filbert N2 test reads a held commit's blob after served moves.
  • Publication. The compare-and-swap update-ref and the rollback when the state write fails both fail closed. If the rollback itself fails, the state file disagrees with served, and readSyncState refuses. I accept choice 6, where accept resets the record, as the answer to the branch change.
  • Readers. packages/bus/tests/library.test.mjs:31 and :41 list the two read verbs by name and still pass with a third. channel-proof pins human-cli.mjs and webui/src/bus.mjs, and 222 changes neither. No test pins a hash of a changed file.

The three items you asked me to rule on

  1. core.createObject=rename: accepted. The order in dewey-0765 was there so that the three security keys come before -C, and they still do. One more core.* key after them doesn't weaken that. I checked C2-04's walk (mirror.mjs:65-76). It skips a file that vanishes mid-walk, and it refuses nlink != 1. So git's default link-then-unlink is the one fetch effect a reader could trip on, and rename removes it. Pack temp files and .keep files are single-link files inside objects/, so they pass. I agree there's no race test, because one would depend on timing. The argv test pins the flag.

  2. The 5 s human timeout: defer. It fails safe:

    • The sync keeps running and records its result.
    • A second call while it runs gets library-sync-busy.
    • library.status shows the outcome.

The fix also sits in human-cli.mjs, which channel-proof pins by hash, so it needs a proof re-pin outside 222's paths. Name the follow-up at landing. It should cover:

    • A longer client timeout for library.sync in human-cli and in the future Console route.
    • STATUS entries in webui/src/bus.mjs for the new codes: library-sync-busy, library-diverged, library-accept-stale, library-accept-invalid, library-credential-missing and library-fetch-failed. That is my 215 N3.
  3. No behaviour test for the credential.helper= reset: accepted, and no follow-up is needed. Nothing git reads in production can name a helper:

    • gitEnv() builds a fresh env with GIT_CONFIG_GLOBAL=/dev/null and GIT_CONFIG_NOSYSTEM.
    • inspectMirror allows five core.* keys and nothing else.

A behaviour test would have to plant a helper through the test wrapper, a path production doesn't have. The argv test kills the drop-the-reset mutant, and that's enough for defence in depth.

Notes. None of them blocks.

  • N1. Close can wait on several fetches. stopSync clears the interval and awaits syncPass, but syncAll's loop goes on to the remaining entries. A close during a pass then waits up to the git limit (100 s) for each entry left. Case 2 has one entry. Before a business has more, check a stopping flag between entries.
  • N2. A held tip still gets read. problemsOf() runs before the lock whenever the tip isn't served, including a tip that will be held as diverged. So while a divergence is open, every 60 s tick reads the whole tree of a tip it won't publish. If that read refuses, the record shows the reader's code in lastError, with no diverged and an old lastFetch, though the fetch worked. It still fails closed. Running the ancestry check first, and reading problems only for a tip that can move, fixes both.
  • N3. Held states log every tick. A missing slot or an open divergence writes one library-sync-held line every 60 s, about 1,440 a day. Log on a change of code instead, if the bus log volume matters.
  • N4. BUILD.md overstates one line. "the Console gets the call" isn't true yet: cli.mjs passes librarySync to startServer, and serve.mjs never reads it. That's fine as wiring for the follow-up in item 2. In the README Sync section, say that a client timeout leaves the sync running and that library.status shows its result.
  • N5. Mutant 5's log holds the fixture token. That's expected, since the mutant printed it. The brief's gate counts the token in the gate run's output, so keep the mutant logs out of that search, or name them in the receipt.
