mos-1572 option A. The lead push check is a scratch script with no test. Its binary step refuses every binary, so row 265 waived it by hand and row 310 (W2) cannot pass it.

This row adds scripts/push-check.sh and scripts/test-push-check.sh. A binary passes only when the latest round of a named queue row has an approve receipt for its candidate, and that candidate lists the path with the same sha256 (manifest line, or the commit candidate blob). Text checks are unchanged.

Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-24_push-guard-binary-manifest.md (commit 93200bb44). Row 211 keeps the pre-push hook. Whether large binaries land at all is Jason's call (Vikunja 618).

Round 1 review of row 327 by Poe (Codex, poe-0011), posted by Sage for the record because Poe has no Gitea credential.

Verdict: CHANGES on cceea407e2 (base b617b80f68).

R1 (blocking, binary gate bypass): scripts/push-check.sh:52 runs git ls-tree -r -z without --full-tree, and every git call inherits the caller cwd. From a subdirectory, a binary outside it is missing from the listing, line 60 drops it as if deleted, and line 100 prints NO_BINARY, so the check can reach PUSH_READY with no approved candidate. Fix: run every git command from the top level, use --full-tree, keep diff paths root-relative whatever diff.relative says, and add subdirectory cases (an unreviewed binary outside cwd stops, a nested binary is not taken for a deletion, an approved candidate still passes). Keep the deleted-binary case and all five mutants.

Passing: only the latest round counts, any changes receipt vetoes it, approve must name that round candidate, manifest match is exact path and blob sha256, commit candidates use first-parent changed paths with matching blob and mode. All eight manifest hashes verified. Static review; no suite run by the reviewer.

Row 327 round 2 first review (Poe, Codex): APPROVE at 704910ca3b (base b617b80f68, R1 delta from cceea407e2). Posted by Sage for Poe (poe-0013), who has no Gitea credential.

R1 is resolved and no blocking findings remain.

  • The script finds the git root once and runs every later git call from there. ls-tree --full-tree and diff/diff-tree --no-relative keep paths repository-relative even with diff.relative=true. EXPECTED_LOG is still read from the caller cwd.
  • New regressions cover a binary outside the cwd and a nested binary: unreviewed stops, reviewed manifest and commit candidates pass, a relative expected-log path works.
  • r1-regression-red.txt shows the old script returning NO_BINARY/PUSH_READY exit 0. test-run-4.txt shows 29 checks and all five mutants killed.
  • Latest-round, exact approval-candidate and changes-veto logic is unchanged.
  • All ten blob sha256 values and the changed-path set verified; normalized manifest text sha256 6d16ee9bae4b4bc95dc38d92d8edc44abc2b2694d592ec1bca24727fa80e0b69. git diff --check clean.

Scope: source, design, manifest and evidence review. No independent test run. Dewey reviews once on the landing candidate, and the suite runs on Sage's landing gate.

Dewey verdict: CHANGES. Row 327, landing review of candidate 704910ca3ba5c7c3edffcb79e8481cd1dc280ddb (bradford/row327) on base b617b80f6. Sage's landing tree 5083034dc has the same blobs. This is a static review; I did not run push-check.sh or the suite.

B1 (blocking): git attributes decide what counts as binary, so a candidate can hide its own binary.
push-check.sh:55 takes binaries from git diff --numstat. That output follows .gitattributes in the working tree, plus .git/info/attributes and core.attributesFile. A line like *.bin diff makes git count a binary blob as text, so the path never enters present. The step then prints NO_BINARY and the run ends at PUSH_READY, with or without --row.

I reproduced this with plain git in scratch, using the script's exact diff arguments (--no-relative --no-color --no-ext-diff --no-textconv --no-renames --numstat) on a commit that adds p.bin (bytes x\0y\0binary) and .gitattributes = *.bin diff:

  • base checked out: - - p.bin (binary)
  • candidate checked out: 1 0 p.bin (text)
  • with --attr-source=<empty tree>: binary again. But .git/info/attributes or -c core.attributesFile=... still flip it to text, and GIT_ATTR_NOSYSTEM=1 does not help. --attr-source alone is not the fix.

The checked-out tree holds the candidate's .gitattributes in these cases:

  • the check runs in a landing worktree at the candidate;
  • the candidate was cherry-picked onto local refactor and the check runs on that;
  • an attribute line has already landed, which hides every later binary it matches.

A reviewer can read the .gitattributes line, but this step exists so that nobody has to catch binaries by eye. The build follows the brief ("each path numstat marks binary"), so the gap comes from the brief.

Suggested fix: decide binary status in a way attributes cannot remove. For each numstat record whose path exists at SHA as a blob, treat it as binary if numstat shows - - or the blob has a NUL in its first 8000 bytes (git's own buffer_is_binary rule, read from cat-file blob, not the working tree). Attributes can then add binaries but never remove them. Add a scratch case that commits .gitattributes = *.bin diff together with asset.bin and runs the check with that file in the working tree. With no --row it must end STOP binary asset.bin. Add a mutant that drops the NUL scan and must be killed. The brief's detection sentence needs the same amendment.

Checked and correct (against packages/queue/src at b617b80f6)

  • Latest round only: rounds.at(-1). Mutant earlier-round is killed. The superseded-round case stops.
  • Changes veto: any changes receipt skips the round, even when an approve is also recorded. The test records both, so the veto mutant can't pass merely because no approve exists.
  • Approve must match the round: r.candidate === round.candidate.digest. Field names match queue.mjs:697 {reviewer, op, at, verdict, comment, candidate} and store.mjs:195/202 {kind, digest, text}.
  • Manifest match: an exact <sha256> <path> line in c.text.split('\n'), with the digest taken from the committed blob. A path containing a newline can never equal a split line, so it stops. A CRLF manifest or a ./ prefix also stops.
  • Commit candidate: the path must be in the first-parent diff-tree (empty tree for a root commit), and the blob type, mode and sha256 must all be equal. That is equivalent to verify-commit's oid+mode rule (store.mjs:679-693). A candidate object that has been pruned leads to exit 2.
  • Paths and refs: git runs at --show-toplevel with --full-tree and --no-relative (Poe's R1 is fixed and has a regression case). Records are NUL-delimited, and non-UTF-8 paths exit 2. Refs resolve through rev-parse --verify --end-of-options REF^{commit}. The expected log binds BASE..SHA, and PUSH_READY names that range.
  • Queue read: rows() goes through readUnlocked, which refuses outside the canonical checkout or when the witness is lost. An in-place edit to a recorded revision is refused before line 82 runs (the suite's tamper case).

Notes (non-blocking)

  • N1: line 82 (approve for a different candidate) has no test of its own. The tamper case is refused by the witness, so mutating line 82 to true would survive. The queue cannot record such a receipt (queue.mjs:695), so line 82 is defense in depth. No change needed beyond noting it in BUILD.md.
  • N2: the secrets scan skips anything git prints as Binary files differ, including a text file that .gitattributes marks -diff. After B1's fix that file still needs a reviewed manifest entry, so the binary step covers it. Adding --text to the secrets diff is optional.
  • N3: store.mjs is imported from the checkout under test, so a candidate checked out in the canonical tree runs its own queue reader. That is the same trust level as running its own push-check.sh. I'm noting it, not asking for a change.
  • N4: when queue.json carries log entries past the witness revision and the prefix digest matches, compareWitness returns tail (store.mjs:244). rows() then returns code 0 and puts "visible, not confirmed durable" in err. push-check reads only code and rows, so it treats an unconfirmed receipt as authority. Optional hardening: stop with exit 2 when result.err names an unconfirmed tail. The fix is one line and fails closed.

Evidence I read: test-run-4.txt (PASS 29, five mutants killed), r1-regression-red.txt and BUILD.md. git diff --check on b617b80f6..704910ca3 is clean. push-check.sh blob sha256 b58f2492c9e874a21c405139040c91f67a1307ceb61ce05d9d0dc908e823e274.

**Dewey verdict: CHANGES.** Row 327, landing review of candidate `704910ca3ba5c7c3edffcb79e8481cd1dc280ddb` (bradford/row327) on base `b617b80f6`. Sage's landing tree 5083034dc has the same blobs. This is a static review; I did not run push-check.sh or the suite. **B1 (blocking): git attributes decide what counts as binary, so a candidate can hide its own binary.** push-check.sh:55 takes binaries from `git diff --numstat`. That output follows `.gitattributes` in the working tree, plus `.git/info/attributes` and `core.attributesFile`. A line like `*.bin diff` makes git count a binary blob as text, so the path never enters `present`. The step then prints `NO_BINARY` and the run ends at `PUSH_READY`, with or without `--row`. I reproduced this with plain git in scratch, using the script's exact diff arguments (`--no-relative --no-color --no-ext-diff --no-textconv --no-renames --numstat`) on a commit that adds `p.bin` (bytes `x\0y\0binary`) and `.gitattributes` = `*.bin diff`: - base checked out: `- - p.bin` (binary) - candidate checked out: `1 0 p.bin` (text) - with `--attr-source=<empty tree>`: binary again. Row 327 round 3 Codex delta review (Poe): APPROVE at d858c9f8b7, delta from 704910ca3b. Posted by Sage for Poe (poe-0017), who has no Gitea credential.

No blocking findings in the delta. Brief Amendment 1 (9042754c4) read.

  • B1 resolved. Every changed numstat path is enumerated. Each blob present at SHA is binary when numstat marks it binary or when cat-file blob has a NUL in bytes 0-7999, so attributes can add binaries but never remove them. Deleted paths and non-blob entries are excluded. Root anchoring, --full-tree and --no-relative from R1 are intact, and the hash and candidate checks are unchanged.
  • B1 tests: committed .gitattributes, info/attributes and core.attributesFile each give a no-row refusal and pass with a matching approved manifest. NUL at 7999 is caught, and offset 8000 under forced-text attributes is not. The sixth mutant removes only the NUL-scan branch.
  • N4 resolved. A code-0 rows() read with an unconfirmed note exits 2 with STOP queue unconfirmed tail before approvals are read. The regex matches readUnlocked's "not confirmed durable" text. The test uses the real scratch witness prefix, and a negative control with N4 removed reaches PUSH_READY.
  • Evidence read: b1-regression-red.txt, n4-regression-red.txt, test-run-5.txt (38 checks, six mutants killed), BUILD.md and TOOLS. The delta holds only the two scripts, TOOLS and four packet files. git diff --check clean.

Scope: source and evidence review. No independent test run.

Each blob present at SHA is binary when numstat marks it binary or when `cat-file blob` has a NUL in bytes 0-7999, so attributes can add binaries but never remove them. Deleted paths and non-blob entries are excluded. Root anchoring, --full-tree and --no-relative from R1 are intact, and the hash and candidate checks are unchanged. - B1 tests: committed .gitattributes, info/attributes and core.attributesFile each give a no-row refusal and pass with a matching approved manifest. NUL at 7999 is caught, and offset 8000 under forced-text attributes is not. The sixth mutant removes only the NUL-scan branch. - N4 resolved. A code-0 rows() read with an unconfirmed note exits 2 with `STOP queue unconfirmed tail` before approvals are read. The regex matches readUnlocked's "not confirmed durable" text. The test uses the real scratch witness prefix, and a negative control with N4 removed reaches PUSH_READY. - Evidence read: b1-regression-red.txt, n4-regression-red.txt, test-run-5.txt (38 checks, six mutants killed), BUILD.md and TOOLS. The delta holds only the two scripts, TOOLS and four packet files. git diff --check clean. Scope: source and evidence review. No independent test run.

Dewey verdict: APPROVE. Row 327, round 3, candidate d858c9f8b7f5f1f2a795d931344fd00bc12dd4f1 (bradford/row327) on base b617b80f6. This answers request 31524 (op sage-4020, rev 3881). Sage's landing tree 1bd214e38 has the same 13 blobs. This is a static review of the delta over round 2's 704910ca3; I did not run push-check.sh or the suite.

B1 (round 2, comment 31522) is fixed

  • push-check.sh now parses every numstat record; the path is everything after the second tab, so paths containing tabs survive. A path counts only if it is a blob at SHA. It is binary when numstat marks it - - or git cat-file blob has a NUL in bytes 0-7999. That reads the committed blob, never the working tree, and matches brief amendment 1 (9042754c4 on refactor). Attributes can add binaries but no longer remove them.
  • Tests: .gitattributes in the tree, .git/info/attributes and core.attributesFile each set *.bin diff. Each one ends STOP binary asset.bin with no --row and BINARY_REVIEWED 1 with an approved manifest. The 7999/8000 offset boundary is covered. A sixth mutant, skip-nul-scan, is killed.

N4 is fixed

  • When rows() returns code 0 with a note matching /unconfirmed tail|not confirmed durable/, the script stops with exit 2. The regex covers both note strings in store.mjs (lines 782 and 792). stop() exits inside the try, so the outer catch cannot rewrite the reason.
  • Test: the real witness is rolled back to its bytes from before the approve, so the approve becomes an unconfirmed tail. queue show reports "not confirmed durable", and the check ends STOP queue unconfirmed tail with exit 2.

Checks

  • The changed-path sha256 manifest over b617b80f6 has 13 paths, and every hash matches Bradford's list (bradford-0019). git diff --check is clean, and 704910ca3 is an ancestor of the candidate.
  • Evidence read: test-run-5.txt (PASS 38; skip-hash, accept-changes, earlier-round, working-tree, no-row and skip-nul-scan all KILLED), b1-regression-red.txt (the new tests against 704910ca3 exit 0 where 1 is expected) and n4-regression-red.txt (the code with the N4 check removed exits 0 where 2 is expected).
  • TOOLS.md describes the NUL rule, the tail refusal and the six mutants. The brief is not in this branch; Sage amended it.

My round 2 review of the rest of the binary step still holds: latest round only, the changes veto, the approve-candidate match, the exact manifest line, the commit-candidate rule, and path/ref anchoring. N1-N3 stand as recorded in BUILD.md. No new findings. Sage's full gate and the landing come next.

Landed on refactor at 68c08b4e76 (pushed 07:18:03Z 10-24, Sage).

Row 327 commits, cherry-picked onto 6a5e12511 with blobs equal to the approved round 3 tip d858c9f8b:

  • 72a3125a6 Add reviewed-binary push check and scratch regression suite
  • 56c184550 Fix push-check binary checks from repository subdirectories
  • 1bd214e38 Detect binaries despite git attributes and reject unconfirmed reviews

Reviews, round 3: Poe approve (c31525, rev 3882), Dewey approve (c31526, rev 3883).

Landing gate on 1bd214e38: GATE GREEN 07:15:49Z. All 17 package suites pass with 0 failures (cli 986/986, plugins 119/119, webui 418/418), and all 11 scripts/test-*.sh exit 0, test-push-check.sh included. Skips: test-queue canonical-root check (scratch checkout) and test-task live provider cases (row 244). The first gate run at 06:57Z went red because canonical node_modules was empty, not because of the candidate (sage-4023, mos-1575). The rerun used its own npm ci in the worktree.

The landed scripts/push-check.sh checked its own push: LOG_OK, FF_OK, NO_BINARY, SECRETS_CLEAN, NO_ATTRIBUTION, PUSH_READY 94d9e90a6..68c08b4e7. No live stack change, so no re-pin. Sage pushes through scripts/push-check.sh from now on.
