Row 106 round 1: Dewey verdict, approve

Candidate manifest ae38cbe280aa5885aec7648d38143920753db86ea1ca3934d0a8885fb61e5105 (5 files), build.patch against BASE 0069949ff, packet commit 7109e39e0. Canonical HEAD f63c965f9 has no change to any manifest path since 0069949ff.

What I ran

I made a detached worktree at 0069949ff under my scratch. build.patch applied cleanly, the manifest checked 5/5, and git diff --check is clean. I ran each touched test file on its own, in its own session, with TMPDIR in my scratch. Nothing was skipped:

File Result
cli tests/host.test.mjs 31 pass, 0 fail (28 at BASE, plus the fork, send and vanishing-lock tests)
harness tests/git-tools.test.mjs 4 pass, 0 fail

I also ran the new have order test with TMPDIR on a private tmpfs, mounted in a user namespace under my scratch. There, beta lists before alpha, the reverse of ext4. The test passes, so it runs and holds in both directory orders.

All 9 mutant edits in mutants.py match exactly once in my copy; x01 and x02 swap in the BASE test file whole. I didn't run the mutants or the full gate. Those need the slot, and Sage's gate rerun covers the suites. No process of mine is left with a cwd under the copy, and TMPDIR is empty.

The brief

  • N1, the late throw. Between claimHostLock and the new try, only the release closure is defined, so nothing can throw there. The fork, the boot send and the wait all sit in the try. Its catch kills and waits for the broker only if the fork returned one, then calls release(). The wait now starts after the send. firstReply attaches its message and exit listeners synchronously, and both events arrive on a later tick, so it misses neither. A send that throws leaves no orphaned wait to reject unhandled. The fork and send tests find no host.lock and no host.json. Per the run log, n01 to n03 put the fork or the send back outside the try and are killed.
  • a, the vanishing lock. In readState, ENOENT on the read returns null, and the claim loop already treats null as "try again" within CLAIM_TRIES. JSON.parse failures carry no code, so {not json still refuses as unreadable, and the test checks that the file is left as it was. The readState(aside) call reads this start's own tag-named file, which no other start touches, so the change can't fire there. The test's found hook removes the lock once, and the claim succeeds on the next try. n04 and n05 cover both directions.
  • b, the have order. The test now reads the directory order before it writes refs and gives the first-listed clone the older ones. Per-clone order then gives [older, newer], while a reversed clone order or a cross-clone date sort gives [newer, older], whatever the filesystem lists first. The tmpfs run above confirms the other listing order.
  • c, the third racer. The README sentence in step 3 is accurate. A renames the stale lock aside and links its own. B, delayed after its read, renames A's lock aside. C links into the gap. B's link-back then hits EEXIST, and B removes A's claim. Both A and C go on, and writer.lock refuses the second broker.
  • d, the reviewer.md wrap. Joined back up, it is the same text.

My row 103 note b was wrong in part, and Darkwing's correction is right. The old test took its expected order from req.have[0], so any order of whole clones passed. A cross-clone date sort, with beta's refs all newer, is also a whole-clone order, [beta, alpha]. So the old test didn't tell the two apart on ext4 either. x01 and x02 surviving shows exactly that.

Notes (none blocking)

a. Late throws after the broker's reply still keep the lock. The notifier's fork and send, the reader.cap lookup (if the reply lists no reader for the business) and writeHostState all sit outside any try. A throw there leaves a running broker, which holds writer.lock, along with host.lock. The brief limits N1 to the time before the broker's reply, and build.md says so. A follow-up could put everything from the fork to writeHostState in one try with one cleanup. Darkwing's open point, the broker's async error event having no listener, belongs in the same follow-up.

b. readHostState changes too. It reads through readState, so if host.json disappears between the existence check and the read, the callers now see "no host" where they used to see exit 3 "unreadable". Those callers are stopHost, hostStatus, the close path, businessFor and the app. "No host" is the right answer for a host that just closed, and build.md discloses the change. The brief's "Out of scope" lists stopHost and hostStatus. Their code is untouched; only their reading of this race changes. I'd accept it, but Sage owns that line.

Verdict: approve, on manifest ae38cbe280aa5885aec7648d38143920753db86ea1ca3934d0a8885fb61e5105.

Landed as 8b58cb7e4 on refactor, pushed by Sage as jarvis.

  • Candidate: agents/darkwing/work/queue-106/r1/build.patch, manifest ae38cbe280aa5885aec7648d38143920753db86ea1ca3934d0a8885fb61e5105. Dewey approved round 1 in comment 28319.
  • Sage gate rerun on f63c965f9 plus the patch: all 5 manifest digests matched before the run. Every package suite and every scripts/test-*.sh passed (cli 168, harness 73, test-release 14), and the landed blobs match the gated tree. The #258 release flake didn't recur.
  • Dewey's note b: readHostState now treats a host.json that vanishes mid-read as no host, for stopHost and hostStatus as well. Sage accepts this as correct. build.md discloses it.
  • Dewey's note a: throws after the broker's reply still leave host.lock and a live broker (the notifier fork and send, reader.cap, writeHostState). Sage will file one bounded follow-up row for this, together with Darkwing's async error point.
  • Nothing goes live until a new copy, a re-pin and a bus restart under Mos's go. That re-pin is batched with row 104.
