Follow-up to row 106 (#1600, landed 8b58cb7e4).

Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-13_landing-follow-ups.md, section "Bus host start: release after the broker's reply, and the child error event".

  • Dewey's note a (comment 28319): throws after the broker's reply leave host.lock held and a live broker. These are the notifier fork and send, reader.cap with no matching reader, and the rmSync and writeHostState of host.json.
  • Darkwing's point: neither child has an error listener during startHost, so an asynchronous send failure ends the process before release().

Owner Darkwing, reviewer Dewey. Files: packages/cli/src/host.mjs (startHost only), packages/cli/tests/host.test.mjs, plus the packet dir. Nothing goes live without a re-pin under Mos's go.

Row 111 round 1: Dewey verdict, approve

Candidate manifest 5e888f9397542301ee13e1ba3e655ea91c1fe13cf35a2ce0b1e72fd8aa3bf643 (2 files), build.patch against BASE 02fe2d9d5, packet commit 67e416074. Canonical HEAD d0cc1ac90 has no change to either manifest path since 02fe2d9d5.

What I ran

I made a detached worktree at 02fe2d9d5 under my scratch. build.patch applied cleanly, the manifest checked 2/2, and git diff --check is clean. My copy's diff hashes to 2ef465444b6936ca, the same as in Darkwing's mutant run. I ran the touched test file on its own, in its own session, with TMPDIR in my scratch:

File Result
cli tests/host.test.mjs 41 pass, 0 fail, 0 cancelled (31 at BASE, plus the 10 new tests)

I checked mutants.py dry against my copy. Every edit anchor matches exactly once, every mutant changes the file, and each of the 9 name patterns matches the tests it should in my run: 1 each, and 2 for the no-reader loop. I didn't run the mutants or the full gate, because those need the slot. No process of mine is left with a cwd under the copy.

The brief

  • One failure path after the reply. The reader lookup, the notifier's fork, error listener, start send and wait, its refusal, the kept-error check, rmSync and writeHostState all sit in one try. Its catch sends the notifier SIGTERM if one was forked and waits for it, sends the broker close with a callback, waits for the broker and calls release(). Nothing can throw between the broker-refusal check and the try. The four throws the brief names are each tested to leave no host.lock, no host.json, no writer.lock, and the broker ended. n07, n09, n11, n12 and n13 put each piece back outside the path and are killed.
  • The missing reader. ready.readers?.find then refuses with exit 3, broker has no reader for business <id>, before any notifier fork, so the test checks that exactly one child was forked. Without a notifier this is a refusal where BASE started a host. build.md says so, and the brief asks for the refusal.
  • The notifier's wait after its send. firstReply attaches its listeners in the same tick as the send, and a failed send with no callback emits error on the next tick, so the wait misses nothing. A send that throws leaves no wait behind (n08).
  • The error event during start. Each child gets its listener right after its fork. firstReply rejects on error with exit 1. Any other error before up is kept with ??= and thrown in the shared try before host.json is written. The if (childError) check comes after the last await in the try, so no event can slip in between it and the write. I also probed a fork whose spawn fails (ENOENT): Node sets exitCode to -2, so ended returns at once, then emits two error events, ENOENT and then EPIPE from the boot send. The first fails the start. The second lands on the listener that is still attached instead of ending the process. That is a real case the listener covers, not only the test's synthetic one.
  • An error after a successful start. At BASE it ended the process with the lock held, so the brief allows the change. On a broker error, breakChannel rejects the waiting request and calls close(1). On a notifier error, the host logs and calls close(1), and does nothing if it is already stopping. up = true runs after breakChannel, close and stopping exist, in the same synchronous run as the write, so the listener never reaches stopping in its TDZ. Both tests see done 1, the log line and no lock or host.json. n04 and n05 are killed.

Notes (none blocking)

a. ended rejects on error. It waits with events.once(child, "exit"), and events.once rejects when the emitter emits error while it waits. I confirmed that on node 26.8.1. A rejection there skips release() in both failure paths and in close(), which breakChannel and the watchers call without awaiting, so it would end as an unhandled rejection with the lock held. So build.md's "an error during either failure path is kept and dropped" holds only when the event arrives outside an ended wait. I found nothing that can emit one during those waits. Every send in those paths has a callback, and close() drains the request queue before it waits on the broker. That leaves ended's own SIGKILL failing with something other than ESRCH on our own child. If ended is touched again, it could catch the error or wait on exit with its own listener.

b. The notifier fork that throws. When the fork throws after the process spawned, which is the only way throwOn can make it throw, startHost has no handle to stop it. The test says so, and throwOn kills it. A real fork failure surfaces as the async spawn error above, with a child handle, so it doesn't apply in practice.

Verdict: approve, on manifest 5e888f9397542301ee13e1ba3e655ea91c1fe13cf35a2ce0b1e72fd8aa3bf643.

Canonical HEAD d0cc1ac90 has no change to either manifest path since 02fe2d9d5. ### What I ran I made a detached worktree at 02fe2d9d5 under my scratch. `build.patch` applied cleanly, the manifest checked 2/2, and `git diff --check` is clean. My copy's diff hashes to `2ef465444b6936ca`, the same as in Darkwing's mutant run. I didn't run the mutants or the full gate, because those need the slot. No process of mine is left with a cwd under the copy. ### The brief - **One failure path after the reply.** The reader lookup, the notifier's fork, `error` listener, start send and wait, its refusal, the kept-`error` check, `rmSync` and `writeHostState` all sit in one `try`. Its `catch` sends the notifier SIGTERM if one was forked and waits for it, sends the broker `close` with a callback, waits for the broker and calls `release()`. Nothing can throw between the broker-refusal check and the `try`. The four throws the brief names are each tested to leave no `host.lock`, no `host.json`, no `writer.lock`, and the broker ended. n07, n09, n11, n12 and n13 put each piece back outside the path and are killed. - **The missing reader.** `ready.readers?.find` then refuses with exit 3, `broker has no reader for business <id>`, before any notifier fork, so the test checks that exactly one child was forked. The `if (childError)` check comes after the last `await` in the `try`, so no event can slip in between it and the write. The first fails the start. The second lands on the listener that is still attached instead of ending the process. That is a real case the listener covers, not only the test's synthetic one. - **An `error` after a successful start.** At BASE it ended the process with the lock held, so the brief allows the change. Landed as 9774d70db on refactor (pushed, 02fe2d9d5..9774d70db). Dewey approve, comment 28331, manifest 5e888f93; queue review verify-commit 111 9774d70db matches (2 paths).

Sage gate on be6f2ed8c plus the patch: every package node suite green (cli 178). scripts/test-queue.sh failed review.test.mjs:123 once under load (16s vs 3.7s in the package run), passed 28/28 rerun alone; release 14 and task 98 green. Mos filed the timing failure as Vikunja #261.

Dewey note a (ended() rejects on a child error and skips release()) is recorded for the next row that touches host.mjs. Not live until the next re-pin; the live stack runs from pinned copy 465bbdfbb.
