Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-13_post-retest-follow-ups.md, section "Row 100 follow-up: git kill reach, close bound and the last refusal tests" (refactor, ec6e3988).

Follows #1594 (664199f7). Owner darkwing; reviewers dewey and sage. Queued until Jason's PM re-test is finished (Mos).

Problem

Row 100 (664199f7, #1594) landed with approvals from Sage (28225) and
Dewey (28226). Their notes and Darkwing's build notes
(agents/darkwing/work/queue-100/r1/build.md) leave these gaps:

  • packages/seat/src/checkout.mjs git() and the runner-side git in
packages/harness/src/git-tools.mjs still time out with spawn's SIGKILL, so the stale lock row
100 fixed in working.mjs can still happen there.
  • Every timed-out git kill reaches only the direct child, not its
process group. A hook or helper git spawns can outlive it.
  • close() in git-socket.mjs waits on the told sockets with no time
    limit (Sage d, Dewey d).
  • send() relies on EPIPE to classify a peer that closes with bytes
queued. The post-loop errored arm has no test; a FIFO as the file
makes it deterministic (Dewey a, Sage b, Dewey e).
  • The 30 second idle refusal has no test (Dewey b).
  • have's within-remote date order isn't asserted; the test stays
under HAVE_MAX (Dewey c). "Newest first" holds within each clone, not
across clones, and the comment doesn't say so (Sage a).
  • startHost's single-host check on host.json isn't atomic.
  • roles/reviewer.md doesn't point at the nothing-to-fetch text in
    packages/cli/README.md (Dewey g).

Owner and reviewer

Darkwing builds it. Dewey and Sage review.

Files owned

  • packages/seat/src/checkout.mjs, packages/seat/src/working.mjs and
    their tests, packages/seat/README.md
  • packages/harness/src/git-tools.mjs (its git spawn and the have
    comment only) and its tests
  • packages/cli/src/git-socket.mjs, packages/cli/src/host.mjs
(the startHost check only), their tests, packages/cli/README.md
  • roles/reviewer.md, one pointer line only
  • agents/darkwing/work/queue-<row>/

What ships

  • checkout.mjs and git-tools.mjs use the same SIGTERM, grace,
SIGKILL sequence as working.mjs, each with a test.
  • Every host git runs in its own process group, and the timeout signals
the group. A test shows a child git spawns doesn't outlive the kill.
  • close() caps its wait on told sockets at a stated constant, then
destroys them. A test with a peer that never reads shows the cap.
  • A FIFO test reaches send()'s post-loop errored arm. The comment
    states the EPIPE assumption.
  • A test for the idle refusal.
  • A have test with more working refs than HAVE_MAX and known commit
dates that asserts the order. The comment says the order is per
clone, or the loop sorts across clones; say which in the build notes.
  • startHost takes host.json atomically (exclusive create or a lock),
with a test that two hosts racing leave one running.
  • roles/reviewer.md points at the nothing-to-fetch text.

Each new check is shown to fail on a mutant that removes it.

Suites: every node suite and every scripts/test-*.sh.

Out of scope

Any broker or schema change. Tying a push to its task's project or
assignee. gc of refused pushes.

Gate

Dewey and Sage approve on the row's issue, naming the candidate

notices go to Mos before and after landing. The cli and seat side is
live only at a bus restart, and that needs Mos's go.

Sage review, row 103 round 1: approve, candidate 6e5ac8c0782bc595d7c0d711d457738ffb42f1ba5f38253912943dd55e55888a.

What I checked: a worktree at 79e126be0 with build.patch applied, all 12 manifest hashes OK, git diff --check clean. I read every hunk in the 12 files against the brief. I didn't run the suites here, since the slot is held; my landing gate reruns every node suite and every scripts/test-*.sh with Docker up, so test-task.sh runs its 98 cases, not the 26 in build.md.

Against the brief:

  • checkout.mjs and working.mjs share runGit: SAFE first, gitEnv, a detached git, SIGTERM to the group, SIGKILL after the grace, and a sweep SIGKILL once a signalled git closes. working.mjs keeps its limits. git-tools.mjs repeats the sequence so the runner doesn't load the host module, and its comment says why.
  • Tests show a child git starts dies with the group, the grace is waited out, and a child that ignored SIGTERM dies at the sweep, on both the host and the runner.
  • close() waits at most CLOSE_WAIT_MS through letGo; the FIFO test reaches the post-loop arm; the idle refusal has a test; the have order is stated per clone and asserted past HAVE_MAX.
  • host.lock: a hard-link claim, a live check, a rename aside with an identity check and a put-back, and a release only on an identity match. Tests cover the two-start race, a stale lock, a live old lock, a SIGKILL leftover, the boot window, a legacy host.json and a boot timeout.
  • roles/reviewer.md points at nothing-to-fetch.

Notes, none blocking:

  • N1. In startHost, two throws after claimHostLock skip release(): a fork() that throws, and reader.cap when ready.readers has no entry for business. Through bootConfig, readers is [b.id], so the second needs a caller that passes a boot for another business. From the CLI the process exits, the lock's pid dies, and the next start takes it over. A launcher that runs startHost in-process would keep its own live lock until it exits. One try around the post-claim boot that calls release() on any throw closes both. I'll file it as a follow-up.
  • N2. close-skips-letgo survives. build.md's reason holds: on a unix socket the kernel takes a few bytes of host-closing, so finish comes. letGo itself is pinned.
  • N3. The sweep SIGKILL goes to -pid after git closes. If the group is already empty and that pid has since been reused by a new group leader, the signal reaches it. That needs a pid reuse plus a setsid in the gap after close; I accept it. The same applies in git-tools.mjs.
Sage review, row 103 round 1: **approve**, candidate `6e5ac8c0782bc595d7c0d711d457738ffb42f1ba5f38253912943dd55e55888a`. Row 103 round 1: Dewey verdict, approve

Candidate manifest 6e5ac8c0782bc595d7c0d711d457738ffb42f1ba5f38253912943dd55e55888a (12 files), BASE 79e126be0, packet commits 0f7df3190 and d38a7a3b6. Canonical HEAD ff16635cf has no change to any manifest path since 79e126be0.

What I ran

I made a detached worktree at 79e126be0 under my scratch. build.patch applied cleanly, and the manifest checked 12/12 from the worktree root. I ran each touched test file on its own, in its own session, with TMPDIR in my scratch:

File Result
cli tests/host.test.mjs 28 pass, 0 fail (all 7 new tests among them)
cli tests/git-socket.test.mjs 18 pass, 0 fail
seat tests/checkout.test.mjs 60 pass, 0 fail
seat tests/working.test.mjs 19 pass, 0 fail
harness tests/git-tools.test.mjs 4 pass, 0 fail

DRY=1 mutants.sh on my copy matched all 32 mutants at exactly one site each, and the manifest still checked 12/12 afterward. I didn't rerun the mutants; that needs the slot. Afterward no process had a cwd under my scratch, and no temp entries were left.

The lock (Sage's checklist)

I traced claimHostLock by hand.

  • Two racers, no lock. One linkSync wins. The other gets EEXIST, reads a live holder and refuses. The race test pins this, and so do claim-rename, claim-no-live-check and lock-is-host-json.

  • Two racers on a stale lock, rename first. If A renames first, B's rename gets ENOENT and B retries the link. Either B wins, or A's fresh link is there and B refuses on a live holder.

  • Two racers on a stale lock, one delayed. If B is delayed after its read and renames A's new lock aside, the compare differs, so B links it back and refuses on the next try. The between test pins this, and claim-no-identity-check kills it.

  • The tmp link. The tmp file is a second link to the lock's inode, so the finally removal of tmp leaves the lock whole.

  • Stale SIGKILL lock. The test kills a running host and waits for the orphaned broker to drop writer.lock. A second start then comes up holding both files.

  • Liveness, not age. Nothing in the claim reads mtime. Takeover depends only on startTimeOf(pid) === startTime. The SIGKILL test takes over a lock a few seconds old. The "however old" test keeps a live lock dated 2000-01-01, with its content and mtime unchanged.

  • The four boot failures. Each one releases the lock before it throws, and its test asserts no host.lock and no host.json:

    • boot timeout (new test)
    • broker refused
    • notifier refused
    • notifier dies

Each of the four release-* mutants kills its test.

  • Close. release() runs in close() after host.json goes. release-on-close is killed.

  • A live host's lock. It isn't taken over (the "however old" test). A host that holds only host.json still refuses a new start, and that start leaves no lock (no-host-json-check is killed).

  • Readers during boot. Moving the claim off host.json keeps the old boot window. The reader table in build.md matches what I read in host.mjs, and the test pins the CLI path, stopHost and hostStatus.

My row 100 notes

Note Where it is now Pinned by
SIGTERM, grace, SIGKILL runGit (checkout.mjs) and git() (git-tools.mjs). working.mjs now uses runGit instead of its own copy. co-* and gt-* sigkill-first and no-escalation mutants, all killed
Process-group kill detached: true and process.kill(-pid), plus the post-close group SIGKILL. The tests use a fake git whose child either dies at SIGTERM or ignores it. not-detached, pid-not-group and no-sweep mutants, all killed in both files
close() cap letGo, with CLOSE_WAIT_MS = 2000 letgo-no-cap and letgo-no-destroy, killed
FIFO post-loop arm Holding the FIFO open keeps send() in its read past the last chunk, so the test reaches the socket.destroyed arm after the loop. The EPIPE assumption is stated in the comment. postloop-always-served and postloop-always-aborted, killed
Idle refusal bodyIdle 300 ms against a 60 s deadline no-idle, killed
have order The comment says the order is per clone. A test covers the order past HAVE_MAX. have-oldest-first, killed
reviewer.md pointer Points to the nothing-to-fetch text in packages/cli/README.md, which exists under "Git socket" n/a

close-skips-letgo surviving is acceptable. A told socket has been sent only the host-closing line, and on a unix socket the kernel takes those bytes whether the peer reads or not. The test pins letGo itself.

Notes (none blocking)

a. A vanishing lock refuses as "unreadable". readState checks existsSync, then calls readFileSync. If the lock disappears between the two, the ENOENT becomes bus host state is unreadable: …/host.lock (exit 3). That can happen on two paths:

  • another start moves a stale lock aside between those two calls;
  • a live host's close() releases it then.

Either way the start still refuses, so it never yields two hosts. But it points the operator at a corrupt file that doesn't exist, where a retry would have been right. Treating ENOENT on that read as "try again" in claimHostLock would fix it.

b. The have test only discriminates in one directory order. The test tells per-clone order from a cross-clone sort only when alpha lists first. Beta's refs are all newer, so if beta lists first, both orders give the same 32. On this host's ext4, both /tmp and my scratch list alpha first, so it discriminates here. On a filesystem that lists newest-first, such as tmpfs, it wouldn't. To make it independent of the filesystem, read the directory order first and give the first-listed clone the older refs.

c. The third racer isn't in either README. The claim comment covers it. But the seat README says two launchers "can't both run", and with three starts on one stale lock, two can, with the broker's writer.lock refusing the second. Push serialization then rests on that refusal. One sentence in either README would say so.

d. Line wrapping in reviewer.md. The new line is one long line, while the bullets around it wrap at about 70 columns.

Verdict: approve, on manifest 6e5ac8c0782bc595d7c0d711d457738ffb42f1ba5f38253912943dd55e55888a.

Canonical HEAD ff16635cf has no change to any manifest path since 79e126be0. ### What I ran I made a detached worktree at 79e126be0 under my scratch. `build.patch` applied cleanly, and the manifest checked 12/12 from the worktree root. I ran each touched test file on its own, in its own session, with TMPDIR in my scratch: | File | Result | |---|---| | cli `tests/host.test.mjs` | 28 pass, 0 fail (all 7 new tests among them) | | cli `tests/git-socket.test.mjs` | 18 pass, 0 fail | | seat `tests/checkout.test.mjs` | 60 pass, 0 fail | | seat `tests/working.test.mjs` | 19 pass, 0 fail | | harness `tests/git-tools.test.mjs` | 4 pass, 0 fail | `DRY=1 mutants.sh` on my copy matched all 32 mutants at exactly one site each, and the manifest still checked 12/12 afterward. I didn't rerun the mutants; that needs the slot. Afterward no process had a cwd under my scratch, and no temp entries were left. ### The lock (Sage's checklist) I traced `claimHostLock` by hand. - **Two racers, no lock.** One `linkSync` wins. The other gets EEXIST, reads a live holder and refuses. The race test pins this, and so do `claim-rename`, `claim-no-live-check` and `lock-is-host-json`. - **Two racers on a stale lock, rename first.** If A renames first, B's rename gets ENOENT and B retries the link. Either B wins, or A's fresh link is there and B refuses on a live holder. - **Two racers on a stale lock, one delayed.** If B is delayed after its read and renames A's new lock aside, the compare differs, so B links it back and refuses on the next try. The `between` test pins this, and `claim-no-identity-check` kills it. - **The tmp link.** The tmp file is a second link to the lock's inode, so the `finally` removal of tmp leaves the lock whole. - **Stale SIGKILL lock.** The test kills a running host and waits for the orphaned broker to drop `writer.lock`. A second start then comes up holding both files. - **Liveness, not age.** Nothing in the claim reads mtime. Takeover depends only on `startTimeOf(pid) === startTime`. The SIGKILL test takes over a lock a few seconds old. The "however old" test keeps a live lock dated 2000-01-01, with its content and mtime unchanged. - **The four boot failures.** Each one releases the lock before it throws, and its test asserts no `host.lock` and no `host.json`: - boot timeout (new test) - broker refused - notifier refused - notifier dies Each of the four `release-*` mutants kills its test. - **Close.** `release()` runs in close() after `host.json` goes. `release-on-close` is killed. - **A live host's lock.** It isn't taken over (the "however old" test). A host that holds only `host.json` still refuses a new start, and that start leaves no lock (`no-host-json-check` is killed). - **Readers during boot.** Moving the claim off `host.json` keeps the old boot window. The reader table in build.md matches what I read in `host.mjs`, and the test pins the CLI path, `stopHost` and `hostStatus`. ### My row 100 notes | Note | Where it is now | Pinned by | |---|---|---| | SIGTERM, grace, SIGKILL | `runGit` (checkout.mjs) and `git()` (git-tools.mjs). working.mjs now uses `runGit` instead of its own copy. | `co-*` and `gt-*` sigkill-first and no-escalation mutants, all killed | | Process-group kill | `detached: true` and `process.kill(-pid)`, plus the post-close group SIGKILL. The tests use a fake git whose child either dies at SIGTERM or ignores it. | not-detached, pid-not-group and no-sweep mutants, all killed in both files | | close() cap | `letGo`, with `CLOSE_WAIT_MS` = 2000 | `letgo-no-cap` and `letgo-no-destroy`, killed | | FIFO post-loop arm | Holding the FIFO open keeps `send()` in its read past the last chunk, so the test reaches the `socket.destroyed` arm after the loop. The EPIPE assumption is stated in the comment. | `postloop-always-served` and `postloop-always-aborted`, killed | | Idle refusal | `bodyIdle` 300 ms against a 60 s deadline | `no-idle`, killed | | `have` order | The comment says the order is per clone. A test covers the order past HAVE_MAX. | `have-oldest-first`, killed | | reviewer.md pointer | Points to the `nothing-to-fetch` text in `packages/cli/README.md`, which exists under "Git socket" | n/a | `close-skips-letgo` surviving is acceptable. A told socket has been sent only the `host-closing` line, and on a unix socket the kernel takes those bytes whether the peer reads or not. The test pins `letGo` itself. ### Notes (none blocking) a. **A vanishing lock refuses as "unreadable".** `readState` checks `existsSync`, then calls `readFileSync`. If the lock disappears between the two, the ENOENT becomes `bus host state is unreadable: …/host.lock` (exit 3). That can happen on two paths: - another start moves a stale lock aside between those two calls; - a live host's close() releases it then. Either way the start still refuses, so it never yields two hosts. But it points the operator at a corrupt file that doesn't exist, where a retry would have been right. Treating ENOENT on that read as "try again" in `claimHostLock` would fix it. b. **The `have` test only discriminates in one directory order.** The test tells per-clone order from a cross-clone sort only when `alpha` lists first. Beta's refs are all newer, so if `beta` lists first, both orders give the same 32. On this host's ext4, both `/tmp` and my scratch list `alpha` first, so it discriminates here. On a filesystem that lists newest-first, such as tmpfs, it wouldn't. To make it independent of the filesystem, read the directory order first and give the first-listed clone the older refs. c. **The third racer isn't in either README.** The claim comment covers it. But the seat README says two launchers "can't both run", and with three starts on one stale lock, two can, with the broker's `writer.lock` refusing the second. Push serialization then rests on that refusal. One sentence in either README would say so. d. **Line wrapping in reviewer.md.** The new line is one long line, while the bullets around it wrap at about 70 columns. Verdict: **approve**, on manifest `6e5ac8c0782bc595d7c0d711d457738ffb42f1ba5f38253912943dd55e55888a`. Dewey (claude-opus-5-5), 2026-10-13T21:26Z

Done (queue row 103). Landed as 465bbdfbb on refactor over row 85, pushed with 817ddfea6. Manifest 6e5ac8c0 matches except the two files shared with row 85. Sage approved in 28252 and Dewey in 28260. Sage gate on 3a1e11b83+85+102+103 was all green. The host side is live since Mos's bus start on the pinned copy at 21:48:51Z. Follow-ups go to a new row: N1 (release() on a post-claim throw) and Dewey 28260 a-d. Closed by Sage.
