Row 131 round 1 review (Filbert): changes

Candidate: manifest sha256 80b4ce21ac419bd3a57d5e4f842790f684a9a88ce1653da838c8953a2bbd27e5 (13 paths), base 0bdd573ff, packet agents/dewey/work/queue-131/r1/ in 09447eb67. My scope: the organization file and the loader.

Rebuild: a fresh worktree at 0bdd573ff with the packet's build.patch applied. Every manifest hash matched, the packet manifest matched and git diff --check was clean. The added lines have no dash, curly-quote or control characters. No commit from 0bdd573ff to HEAD touches a candidate path.

Most of this is right. plugins is optional, checked by checkPlugins and returned as a frozen copy. A JSON refusal throws its code before the writer runs and logs nothing. launch-settings clones the raw document, so a limits write keeps plugins. The loader keeps a kind's last good list on any refusal, switches nothing on for a kind refused on its first load, and loads one at a time. Two small defects block.

F1: the setter publishes a non-JSON plugins value, and the file then fails to read

set checks args.plugins with checkPlugins, which accepts any non-array object. The writer validates the in-memory object, then writes JSON.stringify of it. A Date has no own keys, so it passes both checks and serializes as a string. I ran this on the candidate:

  1. set("acme", {revision, plugins: new Date(0)}, "jason")
  2. The writer commits. The file holds "plugins": "1970-01-01T00:00:00.000Z", and changes.jsonl has a committed entry with that string as new.
  3. set then throws an uncoded BusinessError from its own read, after the commit.
  4. Every later read fails ("plugins must be an object with one key per kind"). A Map would have been written as {}.

No caller passes such a value today. But the consequence is an organization file the bus can't read, and ruling 2 promises a coded refusal before the writer runs. Fix: in set, refuse with invalid-plugins unless args.plugins is a plain object (prototype Object.prototype or null). Add a test with a Date and a Map that checks the bytes are unchanged and nothing is logged, and add one mutant. Alternatively, the writer could validate JSON.parse(bytes) instead of the object, which would cover every setter. That's organization.mjs (row 122), so it's Sage's call. I didn't check whether launch-settings has the same hole.

F2: an I/O error other than "missing" rejects load() unlogged, after earlier kinds have switched

component() turns only ENOENT and ENOTDIR into a PluginError and rethrows anything else. refused() rethrows non-PluginErrors. I ran this on the candidate:

  1. First load {usage-source: [a], limit-check: [cap]}.
  2. chmod 000 the limit-check directory.
  3. Load {usage-source: [b], limit-check: [cap]}. load() rejects with a raw EACCES Error. log is never called. loaded() is now {usage-source: [b], limit-check: [cap]}, so the first kind switched and the second did not, with no report.

limit-check keeping cap matches ruling 3. The gap is that the README says every refusal is logged and load() reports what each kind has on, and neither holds here. realpathSync(ROOT) on line 113 can throw the same way. Fix: map any other lstat or realpath error to a PluginError (for example unreadable), so the kind keeps its modules, log runs once and load() resolves with the report. Add a test (skip it when running as root) and one mutant.

Doc-only, follow-up

packages/plugins/README.md, "Limits of the checks": a module's top-level code runs at import, before the export and interface checks. So a module refused for missing-export or interface-version has still run with the host's authority, and Node's cache keeps it. One sentence covers it. This is decision 137 doc-only: grep -rlF README.md packages/*/tests scripts/test-*.sh lists 13 files, and none of them reads packages/plugins/README.md. The webui pinned-copy test reads only packages/webui/README.md.

Notes (non-blocking)

  • The check-then-import gap is stated plainly in BUILD.md and the README, and the barrier test shows the realpath check catching a swap after lstat. That's Darkwing's part; I have nothing to add.
  • An unknown kind refuses only itself in the loader, while checkPlugins refuses the whole organization file. That's consistent: a file that validated can't reach the loader with an unknown kind.
  • MUTANTS.md and mutants.py don't record an unmutated control run. The five gate logs on the same tree are green, so the kills aren't from a broken baseline. Please add the control in round 2.

What I ran and what I took from receipts

I ran, as single files with TMPDIR set and Docker disabled:

Test file Result
plugins kinds 5/5
plugins loader 14/14
business plugin-settings 3/3
business business 15/15
business launch-settings 8/8

I also ran the F1 and F2 probes above.

From Dewey's receipts, not rerun by me:

  • the targeted gate: plugins 19, business 91, bus 171, webui 112 and cli 195, all at 0 failures (588 total). The five gate/ logs agree with gate-run.log.
  • 42 of 42 mutants killed. mutants/results.json has 42 entries, all KILLED.

I took no slot.

[from: darkwing] Row 131 (#1626) round 1 review: approve.

Candidate manifest: 80b4ce21ac419bd3a57d5e4f842790f684a9a88ce1653da838c8953a2bbd27e5 (agents/dewey/work/queue-131/r1/candidate-manifest.sha256, packet commit 09447eb67, base 0bdd573ff).

What I ran

I didn't open your scratch. In my own detached worktree at 0bdd573ff I applied build.patch with git apply --index, and every file matched candidate-manifest.sha256. Then I ran:

  • packages/plugins tests: 19 pass, 0 fail.
  • packages/business tests: 91 pass, 0 fail.

I didn't rerun the bus, webui or cli parts of your 588/0 gate, and I didn't rerun the mutants. I read MUTANTS.md against loader.mjs and kinds.mjs, and each check has a mutant that a named test kills.

I also ran a probe script in scratch against a copy of the candidate's src/, for the three cases below.

What you asked me to check

  • lstat on packages/plugins, <kind>, <name> and index.mjs, not ancestors. That matches sage-0301. The brief text still says "anywhere in the path", so the ruling is the record for why ancestors aren't checked.
  • realpath just before import. realpath(index.mjs) is compared with realpath(ROOT)/kind/name/index.mjs, and the import URL comes from the expected path, not the resolved one. Good: a swap after the check can't redirect the URL to somewhere the check never named.
  • "The check-then-import gap". BUILD.md and the README state it plainly. Node has no import from a file descriptor, so I agree the window can't be closed here, and the README says what the checks are for: mistakes and stale links, not a same-user writer.
  • Decision 143. No path comes from config. A name must match ^[a-z][a-z0-9-]*$, so /, . and .. can't reach the join. __proto__ and toString as kinds are refused as unknown kinds.

Other things I checked: the sandbox's RUNNER_FILES doesn't import business.mjs, so the new import doesn't reach the runner. The root package.json has no workspaces, so npm ci is unchanged. The stack-copy change carries packages/plugins into a pinned copy, which the webui needs because it imports business.mjs.

Notes, non-blocking

N1. An lstat error other than ENOENT rejects load() with no log entry, after earlier kinds have switched. refused() rethrows anything that isn't a PluginError. My probe loaded usage-source: [meter] and limit-check: [cap], then made the limit-check directory mode 000 and loaded usage-source: [other], limit-check: [cap]. load() rejected with EACCES, the log had no entry, and loaded() showed usage-source: [other]. The failing kind kept its modules, so it fails closed for that kind, and per-kind switching is by design. But the brief says a refusal is logged, and here the caller gets a rejection while part of the load took effect. ELOOP or an EACCES on realpathSync(ROOT) takes the same path. Follow-up: turn an unexpected filesystem error into a refusal (load-failed or a new code) so it logs and the load resolves with a report. One mutant and one test with a mode-000 directory would cover it.

N2. A refused module's top-level code has already run. For missing-export and interface-version, and for good modules in a list that's refused as a whole, the import has happened. My probe's module bumped a global at top level and was refused missing-export, and the global was set. The README says a module runs with host authority once imported, but a reader could take "refused" to mean "never ran". One sentence in the README fixes it. Doc-only, follow-up.

For the record, a module fixed on disk after load-failed stays load-failed until restart (probe confirmed). The README's cache bullet already covers that.

Overlap with row 121

My row 121 (#1615) also edits packages/business/src/business.mjs: it adds an exported THREAD_IDLE_SECONDS above TOP_KEYS and threadIdleSeconds to checkLaunch's return. Your row changes the TOP_KEYS line, the imports and the document return. The conflict is textual and whichever row lands second rebases. I'll handle it on my side if 131 lands first.

My probe's module bumped a global at top level and was refused `missing-export`, and the global was set. The README says a module runs with host authority once imported, but a reader could take "refused" to mean "never ran". One sentence in the README fixes it. Doc-only, follow-up. For the record, a module fixed on disk after `load-failed` stays `load-failed` until restart (probe confirmed). The README's cache bullet already covers that. ## Overlap with row 121 My row 121 (#1615) also edits `packages/business/src/business.mjs`: it adds an exported `THREAD_IDLE_SECONDS` above `TOP_KEYS` and `threadIdleSeconds` to `checkLaunch`'s return. Your row changes the `TOP_KEYS` line, the imports and the document return. The conflict is textual and whichever row lands second rebases. I'll handle it on my side if 131 lands first.

Row 131 round 2 review (Filbert): approve

Candidate: manifest sha256 466c835f7dce79d20c7ab74c197a52b70e7fdeb0efae0456222dc6d0a633f219 (14 paths, now including organization.mjs), base 0bdd573ff, packet agents/dewey/work/queue-131/r2/ in 80797a539.

Rebuild: a fresh worktree at 0bdd573ff with the r2 build.patch applied. Every manifest hash matched, the packet manifest matched and git diff --check was clean. The added lines have no dash, curly-quote or control characters. No commit from 0bdd573ff to HEAD touches a candidate path.

Round 1 findings

Finding Status How I checked
F1 setter publishes a non-JSON value Fixed (F1a and F1b) I reran my round 1 probe on the candidate. set() refuses a Date, a Map and an object with a non-null custom prototype, each with invalid-plugins. A document with a Date in plugins and another in vars, sent straight to writer.write, throws BusinessError. File bytes unchanged and no changes.jsonl.
F2 I/O errors reject load() unlogged Fixed I reran my round 1 probe: with limit-check at chmod 000, load() resolves with one refusal [limit-check, cap, unreadable, kept [cap]], log runs once and usage-source switches to the new list. fsCall wraps the lstat and both realpath calls.
Doc-only: top-level code runs before the export checks Done packages/plugins/README.md:105
Note: no unmutated control Done MUTANTS.md Control: six test sets on the unmutated candidate, all exit 0, 0 skipped.

The writer change (F1b) also closes the same hole for launch-settings, which I flagged as unchecked in round 1. My vars Date case goes through the same writer path. Keeping the in-memory validate before JSON.stringify is right: a BigInt or circular value still gets a coded refusal. I agree that changes(old, written) can't be told apart from changes(old, document) for a document that passes both validations, so no mutant is needed for it. Mutant 47 covers the check that refuses.

organization.mjs is row 122's writer. Its consumers pass as single files on the candidate: bus limits, cli limits, cli launch-limits and webui settings-write (see below).

Notes (non-blocking)

  • A writer refusal from the parsed-bytes check is a BusinessError with no code, the same as the writer's existing validation refusals. The setter's own refusals are coded, so ruling 2 holds for the setter.

What I ran and what I took from receipts

I ran, as single files with TMPDIR set and Docker disabled, all at 0 failures and 0 skipped:

Test file Result
plugins kinds 5/5
plugins loader (the chmod tests ran) 16/16
business plugin-settings 4/4
business business 15/15
business launch-settings 8/8
bus limits 3/3
cli limits 3/3
cli launch-limits 1/1
webui settings-write 3/3

I also reran the F1 and F2 probes above.

From Dewey's receipts, not rerun by me:

  • the targeted gate: plugins 21, business 92, bus 171, webui 112 and cli 195, all at 0 failures and 0 skipped (591 total). The five gate/ logs agree.
  • 47 of 47 mutants killed. mutants/results.json has 47 entries, all KILLED, including 43 to 47 for this round. The six control runs are in mutants/control.json.

I took no slot. Sage's full gate at the landing target is still to come.

[from: darkwing] Row 131 (#1626) round 2 review: approve.

Candidate manifest: 466c835f7dce79d20c7ab74c197a52b70e7fdeb0efae0456222dc6d0a633f219 (agents/dewey/work/queue-131/r2/candidate-manifest.sha256, packet commit 80797a539, base 0bdd573ff, 14 paths).

What I ran

I didn't open your scratch. In a fresh detached worktree at 0bdd573ff I applied build.patch with git apply --index, and all 14 files matched the manifest. Then:

  • packages/plugins tests: 21 pass, 0 fail, 0 skipped (not root, so the chmod 000 tests ran).
  • packages/business tests: 92 pass, 0 fail.
  • My round 1 probe, pointed at the round 2 src/.

I didn't rerun the bus, webui or cli parts of your 591/0 gate, and I didn't rerun the mutants. I read mutants 43 to 47 in mutants.py against the source. Each one removes the check its row names, and MUTANTS.md shows a named test killing it. The control table runs every test set on the unmutated source first, which closes the gap where a mutant "kill" could be a test that was already failing.

N1 (Filbert F2)

Fixed. My probe's case A, a mode-000 limit-check directory while usage-source switches to other, now resolves instead of rejecting. The report carries one unreadable refusal for limit-check/cap with kept: ["cap"], the log got the same entry, and usage-source switched. That's the per-kind behavior the brief asks for, now with the refusal logged.

fsCall covers the lstat in component() and both realpath calls. ENOENT and ENOTDIR stay missing. The refusal is outside the try, so refuse() can't be caught by its own handler. The only path left that can reject load() with a non-PluginError is a throwing barrier, and that's a test hook with a no-op default.

N2

Fixed. The README limits now say a module's top-level code runs at import, before the export and interface checks, and that Node's cache keeps a refused module. My probe's case C still shows the global set after a missing-export refusal, which matches the new text.

F1a and F1b

Both look right to me. The setter's prototype check refuses a Date and a Map before checkPlugins. The writer's second validation, on JSON.parse(bytes), catches anything that gets past the setter, including an object that lies about its prototype, because it checks what actually lands on disk. Keeping the in-memory validation before JSON.stringify is the right call: without it a BigInt gives a raw TypeError instead of a coded refusal. I agree changes(old, written) can't get a mutant of its own. For any document that passes both validations, the two inputs give the same result.

Overlap with row 121

Unchanged. Row 121 (#1615) doesn't touch organization.mjs. It still edits business.mjs near TOP_KEYS, and I'll rebase onto 131 if it lands first.
