Vikunja P19 task 314, Q167 (the Stack runs from a north star).

No role can land a merge. git.merge.protected is in GATED
(packages/bus/src/broker.mjs line 32) and GATED_ONLY, and land-work
(scripts/land-work.sh, row 116) runs only from a conductor checkout into
canonical refactor. The host's git socket (packages/cli/src/git-socket.mjs)
already carries push and fetch for coder and reviewer runs, checked by the
broker.

Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-15_q167-north-star-rows.md, section "Agents land approved merges into the business working repository".

Row 137, round 1: where the candidate and the checks are.

  • Packet: agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/ in the canonical checkout. BUILD.md has the design, "As built" (where the candidate differs from the design), the docs, the brief's test list mapped to tests, and the checks.
  • Candidate: r1/build.patch against base 7a2987cf5 (sha256 49d5048f6bb53e1b546a6b2dbdec14ef4a9bfe5087f20e218018a62481266611). Applied to a fresh worktree at the base, it reproduces every line of r1/candidate-manifest.sha256 (digest a2f94204…5758, above). Canonical b71268b8e hasn't touched any of the 31 paths.
  • Gate: r1/gate.sh ran every package suite except queue, plus every scripts/test-*.sh, and ended GATE_PASSED at 18:55:25Z. Step logs are in r1/gate/. Rounds 1 to 4 stopped on faults in the candidate or its tests, none of them load or timing. BUILD.md "Checks" lists each fault, and r1/earlier/ holds the logs.
  • Left out, per sage-0511, 0517 and 0535: the gated-merge refusal and the host op's arbiter acceptance. Row 139 hasn't landed, so they go with whichever of 137 and 139 lands second. land-work's human-only check in scripts/land-work/read.mjs doesn't change.
  • One change for land-work: readLanding now finds the decision.raise by body.decision rather than by subject, because the broker files a task's raise under its task ref. BUILD.md "The raise is found by its body, not its subject" explains the effect on land-work.

Row 137 round 1 review (Filbert): changes

Candidate: manifest sha256 a2f942048900aaf35f1ea07e4e36d4da0ebaa1fae2ded7420cc9ec019b3c5758, 31 paths, base 7a2987cf5, packet agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/ (request comment 28780, packet note 28781). Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-15_q167-rows-r3.md at blob 6805904555.

The design holds and the code reads correctly. Two tests the brief requires are missing, so this is changes. Both are small.

Rebuild

  • A fresh worktree at 7a2987cf5. r1/build.patch is a plain diff, so I applied it with git apply --index.
  • All 31 manifest hashes matched, and git diff --cached --check was clean (31 files, +1999 -255).
  • The added lines have no dash, curly-quote or control characters.
  • No commit from 7a2987cf5 to refactor HEAD touches a manifest path.

Blocking

B1. No host-side test for patch-drift. The brief's test list ends with "each land-work refusal code". working.mjs prepareLand refuses patch-drift when the applied diff's patch-id differs from the reviewed one, but no test in packages/seat/tests, packages/cli/tests or packages/bus/tests names the code. Only scripts/test-land-work.sh does, for land-work. BUILD.md's coverage table for "Each land-work refusal code" lists every other host code and leaves this one out without saying why.

I checked it with a probe: with the check changed to if (false) refuse("patch-drift", ...), seat working.test passed 24/24 and cli git-socket.test passed 23/23. A test can reach the check the way land-work's does, with a tampering git first on the PATH that working.mjs passes through gitEnv.

B2. No test pins push's unrelated-history check to main. The brief asks for "push's unrelated-history check against main". The existing test (working.test line 164) runs where main and root are the same commit, and the new "after a landing, a push built on the root still lands" test pushes a commit that shares history with both. With the check changed to compare against refs/heads/root, seat working.test passed 24/24 and cli git-socket.test passed 23/23. A test where root no longer shares history with a landed main (an orphan root, say) would tell the two apart.

Sage's check: the gated refusal and the arbiter acceptance

Both are left to row 139, and the packet says so. BUILD.md "Arbiter path and gated refusal left out" (line 305) says 137 will probably land first and leave "the gated-merge refusal and the host op's arbiter acceptance, with their tests, to 139 (sage-0535)", and that Darkwing adds both in another round if 139 lands first. The "REQ-LAND-1 and the gated path" section names where the refusal goes (checkLand and recordLand, after #checkAuthority).

The candidate is safe in either order. packages/bus/src/landing.mjs readLanding still requires one human answer through cli for both callers, so an arbiter-resolved decision refuses not-human on the host and in land-work. read.mjs only wraps readLanding with base refactor, so land-work's check is unchanged, as the re-pinned brief asks.

What I checked and found correct

  • The trail. Each host refusal reaches the task's trail. Before the ticket: checkLand runs inside runtime.mjs refusing, which calls broker.refuse with the task ref, and the git socket's own refusals (land-busy, invalid-request and the like) go through serve's host.op({op: "refuse", ...}). After the ticket: refused() in startLand sends landRefused, which writes action.refused on the task. A Recorded error only answers the socket, so nothing is recorded twice.
  • The seed. root is fetched forced; main is created once with an empty old value and then follows root only when it is an ancestor (merge-base --is-ancestor), by compare and swap. main is never forced, as the brief says.
  • prepareLand and finishLand. The squash is MB..C applied to main's tip with the same patch-id, made before the gate starts. finishLand moves main by compare and swap and moves it back if the broker refuses the record (rollback-failed when it can't). dropLand removes the node_modules link before the worktree.
  • One landing at a time. doLand takes the slot before its first await and frees it unless the background gate owns it. That block's finally frees it on every path, and dropNetwork never rejects.
  • The gate. One definition in packages/seat/src/landing.mjs for both callers. isMosaicStack needs node_modules and HEAD descending from c2365ae51. The host runs it with gateEnv's twelve variables.
  • The binding. The launcher binds the git socket when landHeld is true, and sandbox RUNNER_FILES adds bus landing.mjs, which broker.mjs imports. MERGE is reserved in recordEvent, so no run can write the landing's action.allowed (land.test pins it).

Notes (non-blocking)

  1. Three host codes are the broker's, not land-work's. On the host #checkAuthority runs first, so not-a-merge, not-resolved and not-merge-option reach the role as decision-mismatch or decision-not-approved. The brief scopes the broker change to the authority check for the new op, and BUILD.md (line 368) says so. I'm not blocking on it; Sage may want the brief's "with land-work's code" read that way on the record.
  2. The RESULT message goes past "the authority check for the new op only". BUILD.md (line 166) flags it and offers the narrower fallback. Scope is Sage's call.
  3. The gate runs reviewed, agent-authored code on the host, outside a sandbox, with HOME and DOCKER_HOST. BUILD.md says so (line 235). The human-resolved decision and the approving verdict are what authorize it, as with land-work today.

Doc-only, follow-up

  • agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/BUILD.md line 308 says "Row 139 isn't built yet". Row 139 was built and reviewed in round 1 (comment 28773) and is in round 2. The conclusion, that 137 probably lands first, still stands. grep -rlF queue-137 packages/*/tests scripts/test-*.sh finds nothing.

What I ran and what I took from receipts

I ran, as single files on the candidate with Docker disabled, all with 0 fail and 0 skipped. TMPDIR was set to scratch except for cli launcher and cli thread-launch, which used the inherited TMPDIR.

Test file Pass
bus land 8
bus project-runtime 3
bus broker 16
cli git-socket 23
cli launcher 19
cli thread-launch 8
harness bundle 22
harness git-tools 5
harness tools 19
seat working 24
seat landing 8
seat checkout 77

cli thread-launch first failed 5 of 8 under the TMPDIR override (the bwrap runner), then passed 8/8 with the inherited TMPDIR.

The two probes for B1 and B2 were one edit each to working.mjs in my worktree, each run against seat working.test and cli git-socket.test. I restored the file and the manifest checked again afterwards. I did not run scripts/test-land-work.sh, any suite or any gate.

From Darkwing's receipts, not rerun by me (r1/gate-run.log): the gate from 18:49:43Z to 18:55:25Z ended GATE_PASSED with every step rc=0, including bus 302, business 109, cli 202, cli launcher 19, seat 148, harness 108 and land-work 84 passed, 0 failed. Darkwing ran no mutants.

## Row 137 round 1 review (Filbert): changes Candidate: manifest sha256 `a2f942048900aaf35f1ea07e4e36d4da0ebaa1fae2ded7420cc9ec019b3c5758`, 31 paths, base 7a2987cf5, packet agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/ (request comment 28780, packet note 28781). Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-15_q167-rows-r3.md at blob 6805904555dc. The design holds and the code reads correctly. Two tests the brief requires are missing, so this is changes. Both are small. ### Rebuild - A fresh worktree at 7a2987cf5. r1/build.patch is a plain diff, so I applied it with `git apply --index`. - All 31 manifest hashes matched, and `git diff --cached --check` was clean (31 files, +1999 -255). - The added lines have no dash, curly-quote or control characters. - No commit from 7a2987cf5 to refactor HEAD touches a manifest path. ### Blocking **B1. No host-side test for `patch-drift`.** The brief's test list ends with "each land-work refusal code". working.mjs prepareLand refuses `patch-drift` when the applied diff's patch-id differs from the reviewed one, but no test in packages/seat/tests, packages/cli/tests or packages/bus/tests names the code. Only scripts/test-land-work.sh does, for land-work. BUILD.md's coverage table for "Each land-work refusal code" lists every other host code and leaves this one out without saying why. I checked it with a probe: with the check changed to `if (false) refuse("patch-drift", ...)`, seat working.test passed 24/24 and cli git-socket.test passed 23/23. A test can reach the check the way land-work's does, with a tampering git first on the PATH that working.mjs passes through `gitEnv`. **B2. No test pins push's unrelated-history check to `main`.** The brief asks for "push's unrelated-history check against `main`". The existing test (working.test line 164) runs where main and root are the same commit, and the new "after a landing, a push built on the root still lands" test pushes a commit that shares history with both. With the check changed to compare against `refs/heads/root`, seat working.test passed 24/24 and cli git-socket.test passed 23/23. A test where root no longer shares history with a landed main (an orphan root, say) would tell the two apart. ### Sage's check: the gated refusal and the arbiter acceptance Both are left to row 139, and the packet says so. BUILD.md "Arbiter path and `gated` refusal left out" (line 305) says 137 will probably land first and leave "the gated-merge refusal and the host op's arbiter acceptance, with their tests, to 139 (sage-0535)", and that Darkwing adds both in another round if 139 lands first. The "REQ-LAND-1 and the gated path" section names where the refusal goes (`checkLand` and `recordLand`, after `#checkAuthority`). The candidate is safe in either order. packages/bus/src/landing.mjs `readLanding` still requires one human answer through `cli` for both callers, so an arbiter-resolved decision refuses `not-human` on the host and in land-work. read.mjs only wraps readLanding with base `refactor`, so land-work's check is unchanged, as the re-pinned brief asks. ### What I checked and found correct - **The trail.** Each host refusal reaches the task's trail. Before the ticket: checkLand runs inside runtime.mjs `refusing`, which calls `broker.refuse` with the task ref, and the git socket's own refusals (land-busy, invalid-request and the like) go through serve's `host.op({op: "refuse", ...})`. After the ticket: `refused()` in startLand sends `landRefused`, which writes action.refused on the task. A `Recorded` error only answers the socket, so nothing is recorded twice. - **The seed.** root is fetched forced; main is created once with an empty old value and then follows root only when it is an ancestor (`merge-base --is-ancestor`), by compare and swap. main is never forced, as the brief says. - **prepareLand and finishLand.** The squash is MB..C applied to main's tip with the same patch-id, made before the gate starts. finishLand moves main by compare and swap and moves it back if the broker refuses the record (rollback-failed when it can't). dropLand removes the node_modules link before the worktree. - **One landing at a time.** doLand takes the slot before its first await and frees it unless the background gate owns it. That block's `finally` frees it on every path, and `dropNetwork` never rejects. - **The gate.** One definition in packages/seat/src/landing.mjs for both callers. `isMosaicStack` needs node_modules and HEAD descending from c2365ae51. The host runs it with `gateEnv`'s twelve variables. - **The binding.** The launcher binds the git socket when `landHeld` is true, and sandbox RUNNER_FILES adds bus landing.mjs, which broker.mjs imports. MERGE is reserved in `recordEvent`, so no run can write the landing's action.allowed (land.test pins it). ### Notes (non-blocking) 1. **Three host codes are the broker's, not land-work's.** On the host `#checkAuthority` runs first, so `not-a-merge`, `not-resolved` and `not-merge-option` reach the role as `decision-mismatch` or `decision-not-approved`. The brief scopes the broker change to the authority check for the new op, and BUILD.md (line 368) says so. I'm not blocking on it; Sage may want the brief's "with land-work's code" read that way on the record. 2. **The RESULT message goes past "the authority check for the new op only".** BUILD.md (line 166) flags it and offers the narrower fallback. Scope is Sage's call. 3. **The gate runs reviewed, agent-authored code on the host, outside a sandbox,** with HOME and DOCKER_HOST. BUILD.md says so (line 235). The human-resolved decision and the approving verdict are what authorize it, as with land-work today. ### Doc-only, follow-up - agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/BUILD.md line 308 says "Row 139 isn't built yet". Row 139 was built and reviewed in round 1 (comment 28773) and is in round 2. The conclusion, that 137 probably lands first, still stands. `grep -rlF queue-137 packages/*/tests scripts/test-*.sh` finds nothing. ### What I ran and what I took from receipts **I ran**, as single files on the candidate with Docker disabled, all with 0 fail and 0 skipped. Row 137, round 2, for Filbert's comment 28782. The packet is agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/, and BUILD.md has a new "Round 2" section.

  • B1: working.test "a landing whose applied diff isn't the reviewed one refuses patch-drift and leaves no worktree". A git first on the PATH adds a line to what apply --index staged, as test-land-work.sh does.
  • B2: working.test "once the root shares no history with a landed main, a push is checked against main, not the root". The root goes orphan after a landing. A push built on main lands, and one built on the new root refuses unrelated-history.
  • Kills: with if (false) on the patch-drift check, working.test failed only B1's test (25 pass, 1 fail). With the merge-base against refs/heads/root, it failed only B2's test (25 pass, 1 fail). working.mjs went back to its manifest hash after each probe. The log is r2/gate-run.log.
  • On the candidate: seat working.test 26/26, cli git-socket.test 23/23, the whole seat suite 150/150. Targeted round; the r1 gate covers the other 30 paths, which are unchanged.
  • Candidate: r2/build.patch against 7a2987cf5 (sha256 383fc832…8691), the same 31 paths, and only working.test.mjs changed. It applies to a fresh worktree at the base and every hash matches. HEAD 96fd8593e touches none of the 31 paths.
  • BUILD.md's stale "Row 139 isn't built yet" is fixed.

A `git` first on the PATH adds a line to what `apply --index` staged, as test-land-work.sh does. - B2: working.test "once the root shares no history with a landed main, a push is checked against main, not the root". The root goes orphan after a landing. A push built on main lands, and one built on the new root refuses `unrelated-history`. - Kills: with `if (false)` on the patch-drift check, working.test failed only B1's test (25 pass, 1 fail). With the merge-base against `refs/heads/root`, it failed only B2's test (25 pass, 1 fail). working.mjs went back to its manifest hash after each probe. The log is `r2/gate-run.log`. - On the candidate: seat working.test 26/26, cli git-socket.test 23/23, the whole seat suite 150/150. Targeted round; the r1 gate covers the other 30 paths, which are unchanged. - Candidate: `r2/build.patch` against `7a2987cf5` (sha256 `383fc832…8691`), the same 31 paths, and only working.test.mjs changed. It applies to a fresh worktree at the base and every hash matches. HEAD `96fd8593e` touches none of the 31 paths. - BUILD.md's stale "Row 139 isn't built yet" is fixed.

Row 137 round 3 packet (sage-0565). Base 63c82f1c4 (row 139). Patch agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/r3/build.patch (sha256 52c1f1d6564d9e5e12b5708cbf2f12675dee0582b5fc42ece2fcc203fb5b2a7a); manifest as in the request above (28798). Design and checks: agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/BUILD.md, section "Round 3". The packet is in the canonical checkout's working tree and isn't committed.

  • (a) REQ-LAND-1: #landFacts refuses a gated merge decision not-authorized, for checkLand and recordLand alike.
  • (b) REQ-DEC-2: readLanding takes arbiter (default false). Only the broker passes arbiter: true, which also accepts a cross-role decision its arbiter resolved via the broker. read.mjs is unchanged, so land-work stays human-only.
  • Item 5: the arbiter path takes only cross-role, so no hard wait can pass it. landHeld also asks for cross-role.

Round 3 was targeted (decision 136): every touched test file singly, row 139's hard-waits.test, test-land-work.sh, 7 kills (all killed), then the whole bus (316/0) and seat (150/0) suites. BUILD.md lists the untouched test files that read changed sources and didn't run on this base.

Dewey, row 137 round 3 review (security reviewer), candidate manifest 0fae2b6fa41f1cbcf2117b637a2f7a89cb2af209bf32647f0afc1612a9a34e16.

Verdict: changes. One finding blocks (B1). (a), (b) and item 5 hold, and so does Q169: no hard wait reaches the arbiter path.

What I checked

I applied r3/build.patch (sha256 52c1f1d6…) to a worktree at 63c82f1c4. 31 files, +2115 −255, and sha256sum -c passed on every manifest line. I read the round 3 changes to broker.mjs, landing.mjs, land.test.mjs, bundle.mjs and the READMEs. I also reread #authorityFor, #classification, #hardWait, decision.raise routing, decision.resolve, finishLand and the git socket's doLand/startLand/close().

(a) REQ-LAND-1. #landFacts (broker.mjs:815) refuses not-authorized for gated before #spent and readLanding. checkLand gets the class from #checkAuthority, and recordLand gets it from #authorityFor. #authorityFor requires d.class === cls, so the class can't change between the two calls. The test covers both routes: cited and arbiter-approved, and uncited and human-approved.

(b) REQ-DEC-2. The arbiter path (landing.mjs:112) needs four things:

  • arbiter;
  • cross-role;
  • route_to !== 'human';
  • via === 'broker' and no human answer.

readLanding doesn't check which role res.by is. It relies on decision.resolve (broker.mjs:1476), which lets only a run of route_to resolve an agent-routed decision. That holds today. read.mjs passes no flag, so land-work stays human-only, and the REQ-DEC-2 test calls readLanding without arbiter and expects not-human.

Item 5 and Q169.

  • #classification returns gated for every #hardWait, and that includes a revoke of an END_PROTECTED definition.
  • Business validation refuses granting a hard wait at either class with invalid-authority.
  • git.merge.protected isn't a hard wait, and readLanding refuses not-a-merge for any other action.

So a hard wait is never cross-role and can't reach line 112. The Q169 assistant revoke never gets as far as landing.mjs.

Tests against the brief (lines 319-329 and 461-499): each test the brief requires is present:

  • an arbiter-resolved merge raised by merge-gate lands through the host op;
  • a coder's cited merge, arbiter-approved, is refused;
  • the uncited, human-approved case is refused;
  • landHeld is false for gated;
  • land-work still refuses an arbiter-resolved merge with not-human.

Darkwing's run. I checked r3/gate-run.log, the 21 step logs and round.sh against BUILD.md "Checks, round 3", and every count matches. probe declares a kill only when rc≠0, the named test shows ✖ in its log, and the failing count matches. It stops on a mismatch, and restore checks each file's sha256. All 7 kills logged KILLED with the counts in the table. The ✖ lines in the (a), item 5 and landHeld kill logs name the tests BUILD.md says. Bus 316/0 and seat 150/0, 0 skipped. Per decision 136, cli, harness and webui weren't run as whole suites, and Docker and the full gate weren't run either.

Held points from round 2, now closed:

  • finishLand moves main back inside the lock before rethrowing, so refused() runs after the rollback, and rollback-failed is its own code.
  • The doLand slot is taken before the first await.
  • close() aborts the gate, then awaits active and landing.done.
  • The forged-action.allowed DoS I had noted needs recordEvent, which is trusted-adapter only ("No agent socket route reaches this method"). I withdraw it.

B1 (blocks): an arbiter landing's squash message says the human's CLI resolved it

git-socket.mjs:255 writes Resolved ${f.choice} by ${f.by} via the CLI at ${f.resolved_at}. into the commit that lands on main. Before round 3 that was always true. Round 3 makes an arbiter resolution the normal path for merge-gate. For the REQ-DEC-2 test's decision, checkLand answers by: 'pm-run', so the landed commit would read "Resolved yes by pm-run via the CLI". The squash is the durable record on main of who approved a landing, and it can't be rewritten. This states the wrong authority path on every arbiter landing. No test reads that line: the git-socket land test checks Decision, Verdict, Reviewed-commit, Base, Patch-id and Applied-under only.

Fix:

  • readLanding returns via: res.via, and checkLand passes it through.
  • landMessage writes the real path, for example via the CLI for cli and by its arbiter via the broker for broker.
  • land.test's facts deepEqual gains via.
  • The git-socket land test asserts the Resolved line for both values. Its stand-in can answer by: "pm-run", via: "broker" in a second case.
  • Add one kill that hard-codes the old text.

Notes (don't block)

  • N1. A role granted git.merge.protected within-role isn't refused not-authorized. It gets past #landFacts, and readLanding refuses it not-human: a within-role decision routes to the raiser and closes via: 'broker', and the arbiter path takes only cross-role. It never lands, so REQ-LAND-1 holds. Two follow-ups:

    • The comment above land.test's land-work codes test says "not-human can't reach checkLand". That's true only for the roles that test defines.
    • cls !== 'cross-role' at broker.mjs:815 would state REQ-LAND-1 ("only a role granted git.merge.protected cross-role lands") directly.

Either change is fine for a follow-up.

  • N2. The arbiter path's soundness rests on decision.resolve's s.role !== d.route_to check, in another file. A one-line comment at landing.mjs:112 naming that dependency would keep a later change to resolve from silently widening landings. Comment-only.

Dewey, row 137 round 3 review (security reviewer), candidate manifest 0fae2b6fa41f1cbcf2117b637a2f7a89cb2af209bf32647f0afc1612a9a34e16. **Verdict: changes.** One finding blocks (B1). I also reread `#authorityFor`, `#classification`, `#hardWait`, decision.raise routing, decision.resolve, `finishLand` and the git socket's `doLand`/`startLand`/`close()`. **(a) REQ-LAND-1.** `#landFacts` (broker.mjs:815) refuses `not-authorized` for `gated` before `#spent` and `readLanding`. checkLand gets the class from `#checkAuthority`, and recordLand gets it from `#authorityFor`. `#authorityFor` requires `d.class === cls`, so the class can't change between the two calls. The test covers both routes: cited and arbiter-approved, and uncited and human-approved. **(b) REQ-DEC-2.** The arbiter path (landing.mjs:112) needs four things: - `arbiter`; - `cross-role`; - `route_to !== 'human'`; - `via === 'broker'` and no human answer. `readLanding` doesn't check which role `res.by` is. It relies on decision.resolve (broker.mjs:1476), which lets only a run of `route_to` resolve an agent-routed decision. That holds today. read.mjs passes no flag, so land-work stays human-only, and the REQ-DEC-2 test calls `readLanding` without `arbiter` and expects `not-human`. **Item 5 and Q169.** - `#classification` returns `gated` for every `#hardWait`, and that includes a revoke of an `END_PROTECTED` definition. - Business validation refuses granting a hard wait at either class with `invalid-authority`. - `git.merge.protected` isn't a hard wait, and `readLanding` refuses `not-a-merge` for any other action. So a hard wait is never `cross-role` and can't reach line 112. The Q169 assistant revoke never gets as far as landing.mjs. **Tests against the brief** (lines 319-329 and 461-499): each test the brief requires is present: - an arbiter-resolved merge raised by merge-gate lands through the host op; - a coder's cited merge, arbiter-approved, is refused; - the uncited, human-approved case is refused; - landHeld is false for gated; - land-work still refuses an arbiter-resolved merge with `not-human`. **Darkwing's run.** I checked r3/gate-run.log, the 21 step logs and round.sh against BUILD.md "Checks, round 3", and every count matches. `probe` declares a kill only when rc≠0, the named test shows `✖` in its log, and the failing count matches. **Held points from round 2, now closed:** - `finishLand` moves main back inside the lock before rethrowing, so `refused()` runs after the rollback, and `rollback-failed` is its own code. - The `doLand` slot is taken before the first await. - `close()` aborts the gate, then awaits `active` and `landing.done`. - The forged-`action.allowed` DoS I had noted needs `recordEvent`, which is trusted-adapter only ("No agent socket route reaches this method"). I withdraw it. ## B1 (blocks): an arbiter landing's squash message says the human's CLI resolved it git-socket.mjs:255 writes `Resolved ${f.choice} by ${f.by} via the CLI at ${f.resolved_at}.` into the commit that lands on main. Before round 3 that was always true. Round 3 makes an arbiter resolution the normal path for merge-gate. For the REQ-DEC-2 test's decision, checkLand answers `by: 'pm-run'`, so the landed commit would read "Resolved yes by pm-run via the CLI". The squash is the durable record on main of who approved a landing, and it can't be rewritten. This states the wrong authority path on every arbiter landing. No test reads that line: the git-socket land test checks Decision, Verdict, Reviewed-commit, Base, Patch-id and Applied-under only. Fix: - `readLanding` returns `via: res.via`, and checkLand passes it through. - `landMessage` writes the real path, for example `via the CLI` for `cli` and `by its arbiter via the broker` for `broker`. - land.test's facts `deepEqual` gains `via`. - The git-socket land test asserts the Resolved line for both values. Its stand-in can answer `by: "pm-run", via: "broker"` in a second case. - Add one kill that hard-codes the old text. ## Notes (don't block) - **N1.** A role granted `git.merge.protected` within-role isn't refused `not-authorized`. It gets past `#landFacts`, and `readLanding` refuses it `not-human`: a within-role decision routes to the raiser and closes `via: 'broker'`, and the arbiter path takes only `cross-role`. It never lands, so REQ-LAND-1 holds. Two follow-ups: - The comment above land.test's land-work codes test says "not-human can't reach checkLand". That's true only for the roles that test defines. - `cls !== 'cross-role'` at broker.mjs:815 would state REQ-LAND-1 ("only a role granted git.merge.protected cross-role lands") directly. Either change is fine for a follow-up. - **N2.** The arbiter path's soundness rests on decision.resolve's `s.role !== d.route_to` check, in another file. A one-line comment at landing.mjs:112 naming that dependency would keep a later change to resolve from silently widening landings. Comment-only.

Row 137 round 3 review (Filbert): approve

Candidate: manifest sha256 0fae2b6fa41f1cbcf2117b637a2f7a89cb2af209bf32647f0afc1612a9a34e16, 31 paths, base 63c82f1c4, packet agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/ r3/ (request comment 28798). Brief: blob 6805904555dc, including the second-lander items at lines 319-330 and 460-468.

I found no defect. Both carry items are present and tested. B1 and B2 from round 1 are unchanged from round 2. One note doesn't block.

Rebuild

  • A fresh worktree at 63c82f1c4. I applied r3/build.patch with git apply --index.
  • All 31 manifest hashes matched, and git diff --cached --check was clean (+2115 -255).
  • The added lines have no dash, curly-quote or control characters.
  • Drift: no manifest path changed between 63c82f1c4 and the current refactor HEAD.

Interdiff, round 2 to round 3

I rebuilt r2 at 7a2987cf5 too and compared each path whose manifest hash changed. Ten hashes changed. packages/harness/README.md has no change in its own diff; it differs only because row 139 changed the base. That leaves the nine content changes BUILD.md "Round 3" names: the bus README, broker.mjs, landing.mjs, land.test.mjs, the cli README, git-socket.test.mjs (a comment), launcher.test.mjs, bundle.mjs and bundle.test.mjs. I found nothing else.

The two carry items, each found

  • The REQ-LAND-1 gated refusal. checkLand and recordLand pass the class from #checkAuthority/#authorityFor into #landFacts, which refuses not-authorized for gated before it reads the landing. The REQ-LAND-1 test in land.test.mjs: the coder raises a cited merge decision, it routes gated to pm, pm approves, and the land refuses not-authorized; readLanding with arbiter: true still refuses not-human, and landHeld is false. An uncited raise routes to the human, the human approves, and it still refuses not-authorized. This is the test the brief asks for.
  • The host op accepts an arbiter-resolved merge. readLanding takes { arbiter } and accepts a resolution that is either the human's CLI answer or, with arbiter, a cross-role decision not routed to the human, resolved via: 'broker' with no human answer. #landFacts passes arbiter: true. The REQ-DEC-2 test: merge-gate's raise routes cross-role to pm, pm-run resolves it via the broker, readLanding without arbiter refuses not-human, checkLand returns the facts with by pm-run, recordLand writes class cross-role, and the decision is spent once. This is the brief's "an arbiter-resolved merge decision raised by merge-gate lands through the host op".
  • land-work stays human-only. scripts/land-work/read.mjs still calls readLanding with { into: 'refactor' } and no arbiter, so it refuses any resolution that isn't the human's.

What I checked and found correct

  • Only the arbiter can resolve via the broker. decision.resolve sends a human-routed decision to the human path and requires s.role === d.route_to for any other, else not-resolver. via is cli only for the human session. So arbitrated can only be true for the role the raise routed to.
  • merge-gate as its own arbiter. The raise routes to the human, pm's resolve is refused human-required, and the human's answer lands. The test pins it.
  • landHeld counts only a cross-role decision raised on the record's thread.
  • The bundle prompt line names land_work once the merge decision is approved, and bundle.test asserts it.

Note (non-blocking)

  1. A within-role merge grant isn't covered, and a land.test comment says it can't happen. role.mjs refuses only GATED_ONLY actions in authority.withinRole, and git.merge.protected isn't in that set after row 139, so a role file may list it within-role. No shipped role does (no file under roles/ names it). If one did, the land would still refuse: with no decision, readLanding refuses decision-not-found; with a decision, the raise auto-resolves via the broker, and readLanding refuses not-human because the class isn't cross-role. So the outcome is safe, but the comment above the checkLand codes test (land.test.mjs, "not-human can't reach checkLand: a gated decision refuses not-authorized first, and the broker resolves a cross-role one the two ways readLanding takes") misses this case, and no test pins it. A follow-up could make #landFacts refuse every class but cross-role with not-authorized, or correct the comment and add the test. Whether a within-role merge grant should load at all is a policy call for Sage.

What I ran and what I took from receipts

I ran, on the slot Sage granted (sage-0580), from 2026-10-16T19:56:41Z to 19:57:02Z, as single files on the candidate with Docker disabled and TMPDIR set to scratch. These are the untouched tests BUILD.md lists as reading changed sources but not run on 63c82f1c4, plus two touched files as a spot check. All had 0 fail and 0 skipped:

Test file Pass
cli tester 7
cli launch-limits 1
cli cli 12
harness runner 24
harness claude-gate 3
harness claude-session 8
harness mcp-server 5
harness pi-session 8
bus land 10
harness bundle 22

I ran no mutants, no suite and no gate.

From Darkwing's receipts, not rerun by me (BUILD.md "Round 3", r3/gate-run.log): a round from 19:43:51Z to 19:45:35Z ending ROUND_PASSED. bus land 10, bus hard-waits 12, bus project-runtime 3, seat landing 8, seat working 26, harness bundle 22, harness git-tools 5, harness tools 19, cli git-socket 23, cli launcher 19, cli thread-launch 8, test-land-work 86, the bus suite 316 and the seat suite 150. Seven mutants, all killed: B1, B2, the gated refusal, the arbiter path, cross-role-only, the arbiter default and landHeld cross-role. It ran no other package suite, no other scripts/test-*.sh and no Docker. Sage's landing gate covers the rest.

Row 137 round 3 (Filbert): correction, changes

This corrects my approve in comment 28804 to changes, on the same candidate, manifest sha256 0fae2b6fa41f1cbcf2117b637a2f7a89cb2af209bf32647f0afc1612a9a34e16.

I concur with Dewey's B1 (comment 28801), which I missed. packages/cli/src/git-socket.mjs:255, landMessage, writes Resolved ${f.choice} by ${f.by} via the CLI at ${f.resolved_at}. into the squash commit. The candidate adds that line. In round 2 only the human's CLI answer could land, so it was true. Round 3 adds the arbiter path: readLanding with arbiter: true accepts a cross-role decision resolved via: 'broker', and the REQ-DEC-2 test lands one resolved by pm-run. That landing's commit would say pm-run resolved it "via the CLI", which is false provenance in a permanent record. It is in a .mjs file, so it isn't doc-only.

I checked this on a fresh rebuild of the candidate at 63c82f1c4 (all 31 hashes matched): the line is at 255 and is absent from the base.

Everything else in 28804 stands, including non-blocking note 1. I made no new test run for this correction.

## Row 137 round 3 (Filbert): correction, changes This corrects my approve in comment 28804 to **changes**, on the same candidate, manifest sha256 `0fae2b6fa41f1cbcf2117b637a2f7a89cb2af209bf32647f0afc1612a9a34e16`. I concur with Dewey's B1 (comment 28801), which I missed. packages/cli/src/git-socket.mjs:255, `landMessage`, writes `Resolved ${f.choice} by ${f.by} via the CLI at ${f.resolved_at}.` into the squash commit. The candidate adds that line. In round 2 only the human's CLI answer could land, so it was true. Round 3 adds the arbiter path: `readLanding` with `arbiter: true` accepts a cross-role decision resolved `via: 'broker'`, and the REQ-DEC-2 test lands one resolved by pm-run. That landing's commit would say pm-run resolved it "via the CLI", which is false provenance in a permanent record. It is in a .mjs file, so it isn't doc-only. Filbert review, row 137 round 4: approve.

Candidate manifest sha256 548ee477baca2a172d2585dd3074979f299b83db4484d1ec89674bb3142a9928 (agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/r4/candidate-manifest.sha256), base 63c82f1c4. This approve supersedes my round 3 verdicts (28804, corrected to changes in 28805).

What I checked:

  • Rebuilt from r4/build.patch at 63c82f1c4 in my own worktree: manifest matches, git diff --cached --check is clean, no dashes, curly quotes or control characters on added lines, 31 files +2160 -255. No drift on the manifest paths from 63c82f1c4 to HEAD.
  • Rebuilt round 3 separately (manifest 0fae2b6f matches) and diffed the two trees. That matches r4/interdiff.patch exactly once index and @@ lines are removed: 7 files, +65 -20, the same 7 paths whose manifest hashes changed.

Dewey's B1 (false "via the CLI" provenance): fixed.

  • readLanding returns via: res.via (landing.mjs:155), #landFacts puts it in the ticket (broker.mjs:841), and the git socket passes the whole checkLand result to landMessage (git-socket.mjs:346, 364).
  • landMessage renders RESOLVED_VIA[f.via]: "via the CLI" for cli, "as its arbiter, via the broker" for broker.
  • land.test.mjs pins via on both check paths (broker for the arbiter, cli for the human). git-socket.test.mjs pins the full Resolved line for each, and the arbiter test asserts "via the CLI" is absent.
  • scripts/land-work.sh:225 still says "via the CLI". That's correct: land-work calls readLanding without arbiter, so it stays human-only.

My round 3 note 1 (within-role merge grant): fixed.

  • #landFacts now refuses any class other than cross-role (broker.mjs:815).
  • I traced the new within-role test through #authorityFor. With the decision passed, d.class === cls (within-role), so the request reaches #landFacts and the not-authorized comes from the new line, not from earlier code.
  • The decision.raise path for within-role resolves at raise with via broker (broker.mjs:1445-1454), which matches the test's decision_events assertion.

The comments match the code:

  • The land.test.mjs comment now says checkLand never gives not-human, and why.
  • The new landing.mjs:112-113 comment is right: a cross-role decision has no auto-resolve at raise (only within-role does), and decision.resolve to a non-human route requires s.role === d.route_to (broker.mjs:1477).
  • The bus and cli READMEs match. I found no stale "gated only" or "via the CLI" wording in TOOLS.md, the READMEs, landing.mjs or broker.mjs.

Kills: I read round.sh. kill-2-gated-only (back to round 3's cls === 'gated') and kill-b1-cli-text (back to the hard-coded text) each target the new test by name with exactly one failure, and the other seven still apply. I did not run them. The results are from Darkwing's r4/gate-run.log: 9 of 9 killed, bus 317/0/0, seat 150/0/0, ROUND_PASSED 20:40:26Z.

Tests: I ran none this round (no slot taken).

Non-blocking note: the ?? \via ${f.via}`` fallback in landMessage can't be reached through readLanding, which accepts only cli or broker. It's harmless, but if it ever fired it would print the raw channel name.

Filbert review, row 137 round 4: **approve**. Dewey, row 137 round 4 review (security reviewer). Candidate manifest 548ee477baca2a172d2585dd3074979f299b83db4484d1ec89674bb3142a9928, base 63c82f1c4.

Verdict: approve. B1, N1 and N2 from my round 3 review are fixed, and each fix is tested and killed. I ran nothing: this verdict is a static read plus a check of Darkwing's logs. Read the base drift note before landing.

What I checked

  • build.patch sha256 0cabe175…, interdiff dcc4672c… and manifest 548ee477… all match BUILD.md. I applied the patch to a worktree at 63c82f1c4: 31 files, +2160 −255, and sha256sum -c passed on every line.
  • I read the round 3 → round 4 interdiff in full (7 files, +65 −20), plus the code around it in the candidate.

B1, the squash's Resolved line.

  • readLanding returns via: res.via, #landFacts carries it into checkLand's facts, and landMessage maps it: cli → "via the CLI", broker → "as its arbiter, via the broker".
  • readLanding passes only two values. human requires res.via === 'cli' (landing.mjs:107) and arbitrated requires res.via === 'broker' (:114). So RESOLVED_VIA sees no third key, and the via ${f.via} fallback never falls back to the CLI text.
  • git-socket.test asserts the exact Resolved line for both channels, and asserts that "via the CLI" is absent in the arbiter case.
  • The kill hard-codes the old text and fails exactly that test (kill-b1-cli-text, 1 failing).
  • land-work.sh still writes "via the CLI" itself, which stays true because read.mjs calls readLanding without arbiter. Its value() matches keys exactly ($1 == k), so the new via line in read.mjs's output can't shadow another key.

N1, the class refusal.

  • #classification returns only gated, within-role or cross-role (broker.mjs:508-520). So cls !== 'cross-role' refuses exactly the two classes REQ-LAND-1 excludes. It's also fail-closed if a class is ever added.
  • recordLand gets its class from #authorityFor and goes through the same #landFacts.
  • The new test raises with a within-role grant and confirms the decision closes within-role, routed to itself, via: 'broker'. checkLand then refuses not-authorized, held() is false, and nothing merges or refuses on the trail.
  • Both kills fail it: if (false) fails it plus the gated test, and the round 3 form cls === 'gated' fails it alone.
  • The land-work codes comment now matches the code.

N2. The comment above landing.mjs:114 names its dependency on decision.resolve, which I confirmed at broker.mjs:1477 (if (s.role !== d.route_to) fail('not-resolver')).

Darkwing's run. I checked r4/gate-run.log and r4/gate/ against BUILD.md "Checks, round 4":

  • Every step count matches: bus land 11, hard-waits 12, project-runtime 3, seat landing 8, working 26, harness 22/5/19, cli git-socket 24, launcher 19, thread-launch 8, land-work 86, whole bus 317, whole seat 150, all with 0 failed and 0 skipped.
  • All 9 kills are logged KILLED with the counts in the table.
  • The edited lines in the log match the candidate source: broker.mjs:815 and git-socket.mjs:259 hold the lines the kills replace.
  • The ✖ lines in the new kills' logs name the tests BUILD.md says.
  • The bus, seat and git-socket logs have no ✖.
  • Per decisions 136 and 137, the whole cli and harness suites, the other scripts/test-*.sh and Docker weren't run. That's the landing gate's job.

Base drift (for landing, not this round)

Since 63c82f1c4, row 150 has landed at 0f7bca083. It touches three of this candidate's paths:

  • docs/TOOLS.md
  • packages/bus/src/broker.mjs
  • packages/cli/README.md

This candidate can't land as built. It needs a rebase onto the current refactor and the whole gate rerun on the new base. A path-level check isn't enough here, because broker.mjs carries this row's logic. My approval covers 548ee477's substance. A rebase round whose interdiff touches only rebase context would keep it.

Dewey, row 137 round 4 review (security reviewer). Filbert, row 137 round 5 (Sage's rebase onto 435d1c616): rebase-only check, confirmed. My round 4 approve (28809) carries to this candidate, and no new verdict is needed.

Candidate: agents/sage/work/queue-137-r5/. build.patch sha256 d6cbaaa8dcbb79f247ea500b925f49e7f3f31703303ef6f1c676b4ba3ac9eb11, candidate-manifest.sha256 sha256 f73598fe5c7a40c2ca766779c712a869858853cd47d8821c7c07977f3764aeee, interdiff.txt sha256 7e9b14c18d63e573d1288d6522b5ac1d0703b7a7b91abea6b40daee261743ff8, base 435d1c616 (it contains row 150, 0f7bca083).

This was a static check. I ran no tests.

  • I applied build.patch at 435d1c616 in my own worktree with git apply --index. The manifest matches, git diff --cached --check is clean, and the stat is 31 files +2160 -255, the same as round 4.
  • With index and @@ lines removed, the round 4 build.patch (agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/r4/) and this one are byte-identical. Both hash to b42a3cc78d877246f8536b4c2642c1a7142fcae6441f0d1e44c5075fbe864696.
  • interdiff.txt changes only index lines (docs/TOOLS.md, broker.mjs, packages/cli/README.md) and three @@ lines in packages/cli/README.md. It has no +/- content lines.
  • Joining the manifests, exactly docs/TOOLS.md, packages/bus/src/broker.mjs and packages/cli/README.md change hash. No manifest path drifts from 435d1c616 to HEAD.
  • I read row 150's changes to the three shared paths: inbox --read/--read-all docs in TOOLS.md and the cli README, and a comment at broker.mjs 1757. None touches the landing code, text or docs that row 137 changes.

One correction to the packet README: the 17-line offset is in packages/cli/README.md (hunks at 401/414/444 move to 418/431/461), not broker.mjs. broker.mjs's @@ lines are the same in both patches, because row 150's broker change sits below row 137's hunks. Only its index line differs. This is doc-only in the packet, not in the candidate.

Filbert, row 137 round 5 (Sage's rebase onto 435d1c616): rebase-only check, **confirmed**. My round 4 approve (28809) carries to this candidate, and no new verdict is needed. Candidate: agents/sage/work/queue-137-r5/. build.patch sha256 d6cbaaa8dcbb79f247ea500b925f49e7f3f31703303ef6f1c676b4ba3ac9eb11, candidate-manifest.sha256 sha256 f73598fe5c7a40c2ca766779c712a869858853cd47d8821c7c07977f3764aeee, interdiff.txt sha256 7e9b14c18d63e573d1288d6522b5ac1d0703b7a7b91abea6b40daee261743ff8, base 435d1c616 (it contains row 150, 0f7bca083). This was a static check. I ran no tests. - I applied build.patch at 435d1c616 in my own worktree with `git apply --index`. The manifest matches, `git diff --cached --check` is clean, and the stat is 31 files +2160 -255, the same as round 4. - With `index ` and `@@` lines removed, the round 4 build.patch (agents/darkwing/work/queue-137/r4/) and this one are byte-identical. Both hash to b42a3cc78d877246f8536b4c2642c1a7142fcae6441f0d1e44c5075fbe864696. - interdiff.txt changes only `index ` lines (docs/TOOLS.md, broker.mjs, packages/cli/README.md) and three `@@` lines in packages/cli/README.md. It has no +/- content lines. - Joining the manifests, exactly docs/TOOLS.md, packages/bus/src/broker.mjs and packages/cli/README.md change hash. Landed as f1ee9a989 on refactor, with the round 5 packet in 18aee8fa1. Pushed b0424e9cc..18aee8fa1 at 20:56:16Z.

Round 4 (Darkwing, build.patch 0cabe175, manifest 548ee477) was approved by Filbert (28809) and Dewey (28816). Round 5 rebased it onto 435d1c616 after row 150 changed three of its paths. Filbert checked the interdiff, which has only index and @@ lines (28818).

Sage landing gate on 435d1c616 plus the candidate: 25 steps, all rc 0 (15 packages, 10 script suites), 20:51:00Z to 20:55:34Z. Cherry-picked onto 5d98fb194, which added only a SESSIONS line.

It carries row 139 items (a) REQ-LAND-1 and (b) REQ-DEC-2.

Not live: the live copy stays 3190ad762. Rows 139 and 137 share one re-pin with both SMOKE runs, on Mos go.

Live since the 52f35e7a0 re-pin, run by Mos on Mos's go: window 21:12:28Z, bus down 21:12:46Z to 21:12:54Z, Console up 21:12:58Z. All three units are on copy 52f35e7a0, verify-new 5 x MATCH, healthz ok, no refused, integrity or mismatch lines in the journal. Rollback set sage-pin-rollback-3190ad762 is kept. Plan: agents/sage/work/window-plan/repin-52f35e7a0.md (dc12dc9c0).

Row 137: chief r2665bdaad973 and pm r0271f4ae385b gave CHECK3_PASS with land_work absent from typed (SMOKE A). working-refs post was POST_OK before and after the smokes: working main fc5b342f8 unchanged, refs/heads/root absent, Jason's project repo unchanged at ae0b17c9. SMOKE B waits for Jason (Vikunja #317); C skipped under Q134; D runs at the next land-work landing.

Observation from the window, not a finding: talk pm with pm down prints the row 146 tester line and then waits the 900 s default, the same as OLD, so a window plan should have chief launch pm before that step.
