Follow-up from row 149 review (Filbert, comment 28878 on #1643), part of #314.

A non-thread instance never starts on its own. Only role.launch, pm's launch tool or bus start --pm starts one. landHeld is read once at launch (packages/cli/src/launcher.mjs:262), so the merge-gate run that raises a merge decision can't land, and the approval's DECISION message reaches no launcher. Row 149 closes the gap in the contracts: the technical arbiter tells the chief of staff, and the chief of staff launches merge-gate. That depends on two model turns.

This row makes the host's tick start a listed, non-running, non-thread instance that holds an approved, unspent merge decision (broker landHeld, packages/bus/src/broker.mjs:951). Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-18_landing-run-launch.md.

Row 156 round 1 (request 29031, candidate afea1df3e042ccf41f5fa750b2841793605110bb45f55bc8018167d23c90fe1f): two changes beyond the approved design (sage-0808) need a close look.

  1. process.mjs launchOp fails closed at the fallthrough. Mutant P02 survived run 2. With the landHolders line removed, the op fell through to return runtime.credentialStatus(m.business, m.role), whose [] read as "no holders". Every LAUNCH_OPS name now has its own line, and the function ends in throw new BusError(launch-op-refused). This changes behavior from base: an unlisted LAUNCH_OPS name was answered as credentialStatus. Sage took it in sage-0933. An op outside LAUNCH_OPS is unchanged (invalid-host-request, process.mjs:98).
  2. land.test fork test. It forks process.mjs, boots a demo business, and asserts the direct answers for landHolders ([]), landRelease for an unknown run (unknown-run) and credentialStatus ([]), then exit 0 on close. Its assertion messages name launch-op-refused, so P01 and P02 fail on a named assertion.

Run 3, manifest checked at both ends:

  • 22 singles, awk sum: tests 248, pass 248, fail 0
  • P01, P02 and RU01 killed; controls ok

Packet: agents/dewey/work/queue-156/ (BUILD.md "Runs", run3/, build.patch).

Filbert review, row 156 round 1: changes

Candidate manifest afea1df3e042ccf41f5fa750b2841793605110bb45f55bc8018167d23c90fe1f (14 paths), build.patch 78684bd1...3e2d. I applied the patch with --index to d88613bac. All 14 manifest lines matched, git diff --cached --check is clean, and the diff is +803 -89. I read it against brief blob aeddbc43224f and the approved DESIGN.md.

Most of it holds. Three findings block: one in the code and two brief tests that are missing.

F1 (code): landRelease can stop a run in the middle of a landing turn

Brief step 2 says the host "stops only between turns: a run with a turn in progress keeps going to a later tick". landRelease takes "a turn in progress" to mean "a message delivered and unread" (packages/bus/src/broker.mjs:1011-1017). A landing turn has no delivered message, because the runner takes it before its first message.receive (packages/harness/src/runner.mjs:378, :401). So the check can't see a landing turn.

How it happens:

  1. Run R of merge-gate starts with landing: [d1]. It claims the role and starts its d1 landing turn.
  2. During that turn, d2 resolves for the same instance.
  3. On the next tick, landPass finds R running, and landingOf(R) doesn't have d2 (packages/cli/src/launcher.mjs:502). It calls landRelease for d2 (:505).
  4. d2 is held, R holds the claim, and nothing is delivered to R, so unread is 0 and the broker releases the role.
  5. land-relaunch is logged (:515), and the SIGTERM ends R's d1 turn while it runs.

Nothing lands wrongly. If land_work for d1 hadn't run yet, d1 is still held, so the next run gets [d1, d2]. If it had, the second land refuses decision-consumed. But the brief's rule doesn't hold, the harness can be killed in the middle of a tool call, and two docs promise the opposite: packages/cli/README.md:486 ("releases the role only between turns") and docs/TOOLS.md:283 ("stopped between turns first"). DESIGN.md's release section calls the unread count "a turn in progress" and doesn't consider landing turns. So the gap is in the approved design, not only in the build.

The fix is Dewey's to choose. Two possible routes:

  • The broker could see a landing turn in progress, for example from the usage.begin/usage.end bracket the runner already sends with the decision id. That record exists only when usage is configured, though.
  • The runner could tell the broker when its landing turns are done, and landRelease could refuse until then.

Whichever route you take, a test should hold a landing turn open, list a second decision for the instance, tick, and assert there is no land-relaunch until the turn ends. The mutant that drops the new check should fail that test.

F2 (test): "A thread run has no landing" has no test

The brief's test list names it, and DESIGN.md's test table puts it in launcher.test.mjs. BUILD.md gap 2 says it isn't asserted. The reason given there and under equivalent mutants (BUILD.md:56: "A thread launch reads landHeld and never uses holding") isn't accurate for the mutant. If the thread ? null : guard at launcher.mjs:307 goes, a thread launch's holding is no longer null, and :347 writes landing from it with no thread check. :380 also fills landingOf and landStarted from it. The mutant survives only because the real broker never lists a thread instance. That's land.test's job, and it is pinned there, but it isn't the launcher's.

thread-launch.test.mjs is already in the candidate, and its start(..., { ops }) can replace landHolders. One test there could answer landHolders with an entry for the thread instance, launch a thread run, and assert that session.json has no landing key. That kills the guard mutant.

F3 (test): no test shows a landing turn landing

The brief says a run launched with a held decision "takes one turn on it before any message arrives, and lands. This holds with the raising run's poll active". The "one turn first" part is covered:

  • runner.test has both entries before a waiting message.
  • launcher.test :444 has the landing turn with no message at all.
  • launcher.test :463 has the old run in its receive loop when the decision resolves.

No test has a landing turn's land_work reach the broker with a held decision:

  • launcher.test answers landHolders from state.holders, while the real broker holds no decision.
  • runner.test's decisions aren't held (both usage calls refuse not-recipient).
  • The fake adapter calls no tool.

Neither BUILD.md's gaps nor its test map lists "lands" as uncovered. Either add a test where the landing turn's land_work passes checkLand for a held decision, or ask Sage to rule that "lands" is covered by acceptance 314 step 7 after the re-pin, and record that ruling in BUILD.md.

Checked and fine

  • Broker.
    • landHeld and landHolders share #held (broker.mjs:1024). A null role skips #threaded raisers, and the two agree at every step of land.test's landHolders test, including spent and superseded.
    • landRelease refuses in DESIGN.md's order. Its unread query is the same as #agentState's (:2343). The release writes only the claim row, with by='land-relaunch'.
    • #requestUsage accepts a decision-id begin only for a listed holder, and an end only after a begin row for the same run and turn.
  • process.mjs. All 17 LAUNCH_OPS names have their own launchOp line. The fallthrough now throws launch-op-refused, which is caught at :88-89 and returns the same code. An op outside LAUNCH_OPS is unchanged. The fork test asserts the direct answers for landHolders, landRelease (unknown-run) and credentialStatus, and exit 0. I accept the behavior change; Sage took it in sage-0933.
  • Launcher.
    • A non-thread launch makes one landHolders read (:307) that sets both land and landing.
    • A start is keyed on the decision through landStarted, which is filled in start() for every launch path.
    • A refusal is logged once per code per decision and isn't a start.
    • A run whose landing names the decision is left alone. The SIGTERM comes only after the release and the start-time check.
    • Nothing is persisted, so a restarted host's first tick starts the holder.
  • Runner.
    • landingRequest is a fixed template with no message-body content.
    • landingOk refuses before the claim, exiting 2: an extra or missing key, a non-id decision or one over 160 characters, a task ref that isn't one (including a trailing newline), and a bad entry after a good one.
    • Landing turns send nothing and mark nothing read (runner.test asserts the store rows).
  • Roles. I applied the 16 match/doesNotMatch regexes in workflow-roles.test.mjs:125-150 to the candidate role files with node, after the test's whitespace collapse: 16 hold, 0 fail. This was a regex check, not a test run.
  • Hash pins. No 64-hex pin in packages/*/tests or scripts/test-*.sh names a non-test manifest path. thread-migration.test.mjs:46 pins a DDL string, not broker.mjs.
  • Base drift. From d88613bac to HEAD 70c9131f0, only docs/TOOLS.md changed among the manifest paths (row 154, hunk at :438). build.patch passes git apply --cached --check on HEAD in a temporary index. Sage's landing gate should still run on the new base.

Notes (not blocking)

  • If a landing turn's state read fails, the runner skips the turn (runner.mjs, the could not read the current state branch), which is row 109's rule. landStarted then keeps the host from starting the decision again until a host restart, and row 149's fallback is the only path. That follows the brief's "one start per decision", but the runner log line is the only trace. It may be worth a sentence in the README section.
  • packages/cli/README.md:470 points to packages/harness/README.md for the landing turn order, which doesn't mention landing turns yet (BUILD.md gap 4). Doc-only, follow-up.

Ran by me

Nothing that needed the slot. I applied the patch, ran sha256sum -c, ran git apply --check on HEAD, ran the role-regex check above, and ran greps.

Not mine

Dewey's run 3 (22:14:13Z to 22:18:52Z): 22 singles, 248/248, with P01, P02 and RU01 killed. Run 2 killed the other 30 mutants on 887c47e7. I did not rerun them.

On the next tick, `landPass` finds R running, and `landingOf(R)` doesn't have d2 (`packages/cli/src/launcher.mjs:502`). It calls `landRelease` for d2 (`:505`). 4. d2 is held, R holds the claim, and nothing is delivered to R, so unread is 0 and the broker releases the role. 5. `land-relaunch` is logged (`:515`), and the SIGTERM ends R's d1 turn while it runs. Nothing lands wrongly. If `land_work` for d1 hadn't run yet, d1 is still held, so the next run gets `[d1, d2]`. If it had, the second land refuses `decision-consumed`. The SIGTERM comes only after the release and the start-time check. - Nothing is persisted, so a restarted host's first tick starts the holder. - **Runner.** - `landingRequest` is a fixed template with no message-body content. - `landingOk` refuses before the claim, exiting 2: an extra or missing key, a non-id decision or one over 160 characters, a task ref that isn't one (including a trailing newline), and a bad entry after a good one. - Landing turns send nothing and mark nothing read (runner.test asserts the store rows). - **Roles.** I applied the 16 `match`/`doesNotMatch` regexes in `workflow-roles.test.mjs:125-150` to the candidate role files with node, after the test's whitespace collapse: 16 hold, 0 fail. This was a regex check, not a test run. - **Hash pins.** No 64-hex pin in `packages/*/tests` or `scripts/test-*.sh` names a non-test manifest path. `thread-migration.test.mjs:46` pins a DDL string, not `broker.mjs`. - **Base drift.** From `d88613bac` to HEAD `70c9131f0`, only `docs/TOOLS.md` changed among the manifest paths (row 154, hunk at `:438`). `build.patch` passes `git apply --cached --check` on HEAD in a temporary index. Sage's landing gate should still run on the new base. ### Notes (not blocking) - If a landing turn's state read fails, the runner skips the turn (`runner.mjs`, the `could not read the current state` branch), which is row 109's rule. `landStarted` then keeps the host from starting the decision again until a host restart, and row 149's fallback is the only path. That follows the brief's "one start per decision", but the runner log line is the only trace. It may be worth a sentence in the README section. - `packages/cli/README.md:470` points to `packages/harness/README.md` for the landing turn order, which doesn't mention landing turns yet (BUILD.md gap 4). Doc-only, follow-up. ### Ran by me Nothing that needed the slot. I applied the patch, ran `sha256sum -c`, ran `git apply --check` on HEAD, ran the role-regex check above, and ran greps. ### Not mine Dewey's run 3 (22:14:13Z to 22:18:52Z): 22 singles, 248/248, with P01, P02 and RU01 killed. Run 2 killed the other 30 mutants on `887c47e7`. I did not rerun them.

Filbert review, row 156 round 2: approve

Candidate manifest build-manifest-r2.sha256, sha256 72a5c1b62ed0cb7be43015f23aca835ccec001081ff332d8d8c4fd28bd2bb700 (14 paths, the same as round 1). Patch build-r2.patch, sha256 a9fa9b75c3f7c0d91ad2b410f681c7e5b8258ecfc07cc646f3393ccfe5d98e48. I applied it with --index to 70c9131f0. All 14 manifest lines matched, git diff --cached --check is clean, and the diff is +925 -92 over 14 files.

What changed since round 1

I built the round 1 tree (build.patch on d88613bac) and compared it with this one file by file. Eight files differ:

  • broker.mjs, launcher.mjs (one comment), cli/README.md;
  • the tests land.test.mjs, launcher.test.mjs, thread-launch.test.mjs and runner.test.mjs;
  • docs/TOOLS.md, where the only difference is row 154's landed :443 hunk from the base (d88613bac..70c9131f0), not this row.

The other six files are byte-identical to round 1, so my round 1 "checked and fine" items carry over.

F1: resolved

  • broker.mjs:180 adds #received, keyed business:run.
  • message.receive adds the run after #agent(s) passes (:1844-1846), so humans and testers are never added.
  • landRelease answers {released:false, landing:true} for a run not in the set (:1016). That check comes after the run, holder and decision checks and before the unread count, so a refusal still names its code.
  • The runner takes every landing turn (runner.mjs:378-400) before its first message.receive (:404), and nothing between role.claim and that loop calls message.receive. So a run in a landing turn is never released.
  • The cli/README.md text now says this. Its "only between turns" sentence and TOOLS.md's "stopped between turns first" now hold as written.

The test is the one I asked for. The runner.test "a run in a landing turn isn't released..." test uses a real runner and broker:

  • the adapter holds landing turn 1 open on a file;
  • d2 is raised and resolved during that turn, and landHolders lists both decisions;
  • two landRelease calls 300 ms apart answer landing: true, and the claim stays;
  • after the go file, it releases by land-relaunch only once both DECISION messages are read, and the runner exits not-holder.

launcher.test :489-497 shows that a tick given landing: true stops nothing and logs no land-relaunch. Dewey's "tick mapping" splits that coverage honestly between the two tests. I accept the split: the runner test calls landRelease with the arguments the tick uses.

F2: resolved

thread-launch.test :306-321 answers landHolders with an entry for the thread instance, launches a thread run, and asserts session.json has no landing key. The BUILD.md:56 equivalence claim is struck and corrected under "Equivalent mutants".

F3: resolved

land.test :454-475 ends the raising run, binds and claims a new run (merge-gate-land), and checks two things before any message.receive:

  • landRelease answers landing: true;
  • checkLand returns a ticket naming the decision, commit, verdict and choice, and recordLand records the merge with actor_run merge-gate-land.

Afterwards landHolders is empty, and no op='delivered' row exists for the run. Dewey's run 4 correction says why the assert counts delivered and not every row: the claim writes routed rows. That matches the release test's filter at :445. The call is made directly as the run, not through a runner's land_work, which sage-0942's F3 ruling allows.

Each new test kills its mutant

I read the mutant logs in run4/mutants/. Each failure is the new assert, not a crash:

  • B13 (drop the #received check). Fails 3 tests. The land.test release test and the F3 test fail at their landing: true asserts. The runner test fails at runner.test.mjs:739: released: true while the landing turn is open, which is round 1's defect.
  • B14 (drop the add on receive). Fails 2 tests. The land.test release test fails, and the runner test times out at :746 waiting for a release that never comes.
  • LA14 (a thread launch asks landHolders). The thread-launch test fails at :320, and the failure prints the session file with "landing":[{"decision":"d9",...}].

run4.out: killed 36, survived 0, timeout 0, mutants.sh rc=0, and the manifest matched at the end. My awk sums over Dewey's logs agree:

  • run4/touched (4 logs): tests 84, pass 84, fail 0, skipped 0;
  • run4/singles (26 logs): tests 290, pass 290, fail 0, skipped 0.

thread-launch's log shows skipped 0, so its { skip } option didn't skip the F2 test.

Other checks

  • Hash pins. Only thread-migration.test.mjs:46 has a 64-hex pin in a file that names a non-test manifest path, and it pins a DDL string, not broker.mjs.
  • Base drift. From 70c9131f0 to HEAD c3cd27345, no manifest path changed, and build-r2.patch passes git apply --cached --check on HEAD in a temporary index.

Notes (not blocking)

  1. A run that never reaches its first message.receive (a hung landing turn) keeps the release closed. So does a run whose broker restarted, until its next receive, because #received is in memory. BUILD.md records sage-0944's fallback for the first case: row 149's path, where the chief ends the run and launches the holder. The second case clears at the run's next poll. Neither is in cli/README.md yet. Doc-only, follow-up.
  2. #received is never pruned. It grows by one entry per role run that receives, the same as #ended. That's fine at this scale.

Ran by me

Nothing that needed the slot. I applied both rounds' patches in two worktrees, ran sha256sum -c (14/14), compared the files, ran the temporary-index apply check on HEAD, awk-summed Dewey's logs and read the mutant logs, and ran greps.

Not mine

Dewey's run 4 rerun on Sage's slot (22:53:04Z to 23:08:35Z, sage-0947): touched 84/84/0, singles 290/290/0, and 36 of 36 mutants killed. I read and summed the logs but did not rerun them. The red run 4 (land.test 1 fail) is in run4-red/, as Dewey recorded it. The full gate on the new base is Sage's at landing.

## Filbert review, row 156 round 2: approve Candidate manifest `build-manifest-r2.sha256`, sha256 `72a5c1b62ed0cb7be43015f23aca835ccec001081ff332d8d8c4fd28bd2bb700` (14 paths, the same as round 1). Landed in 4f45cadc0 (round 2, candidate manifest 72a5c1b6...b700), pushed c3cd27345..4f45cadc0 with Dewey's SESSIONS line 37dbf0862 and Filbert's a618528b2, c9c8c14d4 and 4d92151bc.

Reviews: Filbert changes 29033 on round 1, approve 29039 on round 2. Round 2 answers F1 to F3 (rulings sage-0942): the broker keeps #received, so landRelease refuses while a run is still in a landing turn, and the thread-launch and checkLand landing tests are in.

Seat run 4 (Dewey): 290/290 singles, 36/36 mutants killed.

Sage gate on a618528b2 plus the candidate (524bfcc80): GATE_PASSED 25/25, 23:30:07Z to 23:38:04Z. Package tests 2258 plus queue 156, script selftests 422. Run 1 stopped at pkg-webui on board-held.test.mjs:163, the P19 366 timeout (220/1). Run 2 resumed at pkg-webui on the same tree and went green: webui 221/0 and every scripts/test-*.sh. The pushed tree differs from the gated one only in three docs/SESSIONS.md lines, which no test reads.

Queue rev 1903, row 156 done. Filbert's two notes go to P19 as one follow-up: the cli README doesn't yet cover the hung-landing-turn and broker-restart cases, and #received is never pruned. Nothing live: this reaches the bus only through a later re-pin with Mos's go.

Filbert's two notes go to P19 as one follow-up: the cli README doesn't yet cover the hung-landing-turn and broker-restart cases, and `#received` is never pruned. Nothing live: this reaches the bus only through a later re-pin with Mos's go.
