Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-12_pm-test-fixes.md, section "Row 93 follow-up: git socket hardening and refusal tests" (refactor).

Follows #1587 (4da68152). Owner darkwing; reviewers dewey and sage.

Problem

Row 93 (4da68152, #1587) landed with approvals from Dewey (28196) and
Sage (28197), and neither blocked. Their non-blocking notes, with
Darkwing's agents/darkwing/work/queue-93/r1-notes.md (eabd5982),
leave these gaps:

  • Five host refusals have no test: not-a-role, host-closing,
    git-busy, root-unreadable, unknown-project.
  • working.mjs kills a timed-out git with SIGKILL, so git never
removes its lockfiles. A stale refs/heads/<branch>.lock then blocks
every later push to that branch until an operator removes it.
  • When record throws, the work ref's rollback update-ref result
isn't checked. A failed rollback leaves an unrecorded commit on the
work ref, and nothing reports it.
  • readBody in git-socket.mjs has only a per-chunk idle timeout. A
session that sends a byte every 29 seconds holds a slot, and eight
such sessions make the socket refuse git-busy for everyone.
  • A reviewer that disconnects mid-fetch is filed as git-failed.
  • The runner fills have (HAVE_MAX 32) from all origin and working
refs in sort order, so with many refs it can drop the ones that
    matter.
  • The repository lock is in-process: it assumes one launcher per
dataRoot, and no README says so.

Owner and reviewer

Darkwing builds it. Dewey and Sage review.

Files owned

  • packages/seat/src/working.mjs, packages/seat/tests/working.test.mjs,
    packages/seat/README.md
  • packages/cli/src/git-socket.mjs, packages/cli/tests/git-socket.test.mjs,
    packages/cli/README.md
  • packages/harness/src/git-tools.mjs and its tests, for have only

What ships

  • One test per untested refusal named above.
  • On timeout, host git gets SIGTERM, a short grace period, then SIGKILL.
A test shows a timed-out push leaves no ref lock behind, and that the
next push to the branch lands.
  • A failed rollback refuses rollback-failed and is logged by the host,
in place of the record's code. The broker's own refusal is already on
the trail. Test it with a rollback forced to fail.
  • readBody has a total deadline as well as the idle timeout. The
deadline is a stated constant, or a stated function of the request's
size. A trickling client test refuses within it and frees its slot.
  • A client gone mid-fetch is filed as fetch-aborted, not
    git-failed.
  • The runner's have lists the working refs before origin's and never
more than HAVE_MAX. A test uses more than 32 refs.
  • The seat README says the lock assumes one launcher per dataRoot. The
reviewer docs say what nothing-to-fetch means.

Each new check is shown to fail on a mutant that removes it.

Suites: every node suite and every scripts/test-*.sh.

Out of scope

  • Tying a push's project to the task's own project, and checking that
the pusher is the task's assignee. Both need a design ruling first.
  • gc of objects from refused pushes.
  • Any broker or schema change.

Gate

Dewey and Sage approve on the row's issue, naming the candidate
manifest, and the suites above pass on Sage's gate rerun. The cli and
seat changes reach the host only at a bus restart. That restart needs
Mos's go, and it batches with row 80's. Decision 109 notices go to Mos
before and after landing.

Sage review, row 100 round 1 (#1594): APPROVE

Candidate: agents/darkwing/work/queue-100/r1/build.patch, candidate manifest 279d1c99cd14aadc70345585d721aef6c23e12eb42eb7f81d52610a5ad9cbff2 (8 paths), base 8e0fbca4. 8e0fbca4..c8302a06 touches none of the 8 paths.

Against the brief:

  1. Five refusals, one test each: not-a-role (no role, and another business), host-closing, git-busy (maxActive 2), root-unreadable, unknown-project. Each has a mutant that removes the check, and each mutant was killed. Met.
  2. Timeout: working.mjs drops spawn's SIGKILL timeout for its own SIGTERM, then SIGKILL after GIT_GRACE_MS (5 s). settle() clears both timers on close and on error. The lock test holds the ref lock in a reference-transaction hook, shows the SIGTERM'd fetch leaves no .lock, and shows the next push lands. The escalation test uses a git that traps TERM. Met.
  3. rollback-failed: an update-ref that fails refuses rollback-failed, naming the ref, the commit and record's error. The host logs it as git socket: rollback-failed: ..., and it also goes on the trail through refuse. Both the delete case and the previous-ref case are tested with a held lock. Met.
  4. Total body deadline: bodyDeadline(size) = 30 s + size/256 ms, 161 s at the 32 MiB cap. That's a stated function. The trickle test refuses body-timeout and frees its slot. Met. The idle path now refuses body-timeout too, where it used to be invalid-request. I accept that: it's the same failure, refuse takes any short code, and there's no schema change.
  5. fetch-aborted: pipeline() is replaced by send(), which files a close while chunks remain, or after a failed queued write, as fetch-aborted. A close after the last chunk with no write error counts as served. The review-loop test now checks action.refused is empty after a good fetch. That check is what caught the first cut filing every served fetch as aborted. Good catch, and it's well documented in build.md. Met.
  6. have: the working refs come before origin's, and the list never exceeds HAVE_MAX. The test uses 53 refs over two clones. Met.
  7. Docs: the seat README covers the one-launcher-per-dataRoot lock assumption. The cli README covers nothing-to-fetch, fetch-aborted, unknown-project, body-timeout and host-closing. Met. Pointing roles/reviewer.md at it is a follow-up, as build.md says.

Mutants: 16 of 16 killed, in build.md, with the escalation mutant's 240 s cap explained.

Non-blocking notes, for the follow-up row:
a. git-tools.mjs: "newest first" holds within each clone and remote, not across clones. With several projects, one clone's old working refs come before a newer clone's. The comment should say so, or the loop could sort across clones.
b. send(): a peer that closes with bytes still queued and no write error yet counts as served if those were the last chunk. Unix socket writes to a closed peer usually fail with EPIPE, so in practice it lands on fetch-aborted, but the classification rests on that. It's a trail code, not a security boundary. One line in the comment would do.
c. The kill still goes to the direct git, not its process group. Build.md lists it, with checkout.mjs and the runner's git() still on spawn's SIGKILL.
d. close() waits for the told sockets' 'finish' or 'close', with no bound. A peer that never reads can't block it on a few bytes over a local socket, but a short cap would make the shutdown's worst case explicit.

Gate: my full rerun on c8302a06 plus the patch, 16:57:32 to 17:01:32Z, manifest 8/8 OK. All 14 node suites green (bus 127, business 67, cli 146, control-board 124, conversation 182, discord 178, harness 70, ledger 78, mosaic 69, queue 150, runs 43, seat 109, tasks 92, webui 108) and all 9 scripts/test-*.sh green. test-release ran its 14 tests and test-task its docker cases.

Landing waits for Dewey's verdict. The cli and seat changes take effect on the host only at the batched bus restart with row 80, on Mos's go. Decision 109 notices go to Mos before and after landing.

Row 100 round 1: Dewey verdict, approve

Candidate manifest 279d1c99cd14aadc70345585d721aef6c23e12eb42eb7f81d52610a5ad9cbff2 (8 paths), build.patch c8e5e1836ad10af1…, base 8e0fbca4. I applied the patch in my own worktree, and the manifest checks 8/8. git diff 8e0fbca4 c8302a067 on those paths is empty, so the base hasn't drifted as of canonical HEAD c8302a067.

Runs (slot from Sage, 17:03-17:05Z)

Each run went in its own process group and was killed as a group afterward. My sweep afterward found nothing left.

  • seat node --test tests/: 109 pass, 0 fail
  • harness: 70 pass, 0 fail
  • cli git-socket.test, five runs in a row: 15/15 each time

I also ran four spot mutants of my own, aimed at gaps Darkwing's 16 don't cover. All four survived; see notes a-d.

Brief items

Each item has a test that fails on a mutant removing its check, except where the notes below say otherwise:

  • not-a-role, host-closing, git-busy, root-unreadable and unknown-project
  • SIGTERM leaving no ref lock with the next push landing, and the SIGKILL escalation
  • rollback-failed, both refused and logged
  • the trickle deadline freeing its slot
  • fetch-aborted instead of git-failed
  • have working-before-origin and capped at HAVE_MAX

The seat README has the one-launcher-per-dataRoot assumption. The cli README says what nothing-to-fetch means. The diff stays inside the brief's scope: no task-to-project tie, no assignee check, no gc, no broker or schema change. body-timeout is a new refusal code, which broker.refuse already accepts.

I read send() closely, as asked:

  • A close while chunks are still to go is fetch-aborted.
  • A close after the last write, with no failed write, is served.
  • A failed queued write (EPIPE) is fetch-aborted, whether the close arrives during the drain wait or the finish wait.

The reviewer reads exactly size bytes and hangs up, so treating that close as served is right. The review loop test now checks action.refused after close(), which is what caught the first cut.

Notes (none blocking)

a. The post-loop errored branch has no test. My mutant postloop-destroyed-served changes the block after the loop, if (socket.destroyed) { if (served()) return; throw aborted(); }, to return served unconditionally, and it survives. The EPIPE stand-in sets highWaterMark 1, so its write returns false and the failure lands in the drain wait. The post-loop arm is reached when the last write returns true and then fails before the file stream yields its end. A test could make that deterministic with a FIFO as the file: write a chunk, fail the stand-in's pending write, then close the FIFO.

b. The 30 s idle refusal has no test. My mutant idle-code sets the idle code back to invalid-request, and it survives. Darkwing already listed this.

c. The within-remote order isn't asserted. My mutant have-unsorted drops --sort=-committerdate, and it survives. The test has 13 working refs, under the cap of 32, so none are cut and the order inside a remote doesn't matter to it. Raising the working refs past 32 with known commit dates would cover it. The brief doesn't require the date order, so this is only a note.

d. close() waiting on told sockets is unobservable at this size. My mutant close-no-wait replaces the await Promise.all([...told]...) with void, and it survives. The host-closing refusal is a few bytes and flushes on write, so destroying straight after loses nothing a test can see. I read it as near-equivalent at this size and correct to keep. Sage noted that this wait has no time limit. A told peer that never reads would need a full socket buffer before it could stall the wait, which a few bytes can't fill.

e. send() can't tell a reviewer who left after the kernel took the last bytes from one who read them. Without an acknowledgement, the host can't know the difference. Only the trail label is wrong: the runner's own fetch fails and reports it. Sage made the same point.

f. The kill reaches only the direct git child. checkout.mjs and the runner's git() still send SIGKILL. Both are Darkwing's listed follow-ups.

g. roles/reviewer.md doesn't point at the nothing-to-fetch text. It isn't this row's file; Darkwing listed it as a follow-up.

Verdict: approve, on manifest 279d1c99cd14aadc70345585d721aef6c23e12eb42eb7f81d52610a5ad9cbff2.

The diff stays inside the brief's scope: no task-to-project tie, no assignee check, no gc, no broker or schema change. body-timeout is a new refusal code, which broker.refuse already accepts. I read `send()` closely, as asked: - A close while chunks are still to go is fetch-aborted. - A close after the last write, with no failed write, is served. - A failed queued write (EPIPE) is fetch-aborted, whether the close arrives during the drain wait or the finish wait. The reviewer reads exactly `size` bytes and hangs up, so treating that close as served is right. The review loop test now checks `action.refused` after close(), which is what caught the first cut. ### Notes (none blocking) a. **The post-loop errored branch has no test.** My mutant `postloop-destroyed-served` changes the block after the loop, `if (socket.destroyed) { if (served()) return; throw aborted(); }`, to return served unconditionally, and it survives. The EPIPE stand-in sets highWaterMark 1, so its write returns false and the failure lands in the drain wait. The post-loop arm is reached when the last write returns true and then fails before the file stream yields its end. A test could make that deterministic with a FIFO as the file: write a chunk, fail the stand-in's pending write, then close the FIFO. b. **The 30 s idle refusal has no test.** My mutant `idle-code` sets the idle code back to invalid-request, and it survives. Darkwing already listed this. c. **The within-remote order isn't asserted.** My mutant `have-unsorted` drops `--sort=-committerdate`, and it survives. The test has 13 working refs, under the cap of 32, so none are cut and the order inside a remote doesn't matter to it. Raising the working refs past 32 with known commit dates would cover it. The brief doesn't require the date order, so this is only a note. d. **close() waiting on told sockets is unobservable at this size.** My mutant `close-no-wait` replaces the `await Promise.all([...told]...)` with `void`, and it survives. The host-closing refusal is a few bytes and flushes on write, so destroying straight after loses nothing a test can see. I read it as near-equivalent at this size and correct to keep. Sage noted that this wait has no time limit. A told peer that never reads would need a full socket buffer before it could stall the wait, which a few bytes can't fill. e. **send() can't tell a reviewer who left after the kernel took the last bytes from one who read them.** Without an acknowledgement, the host can't know the difference. Only the trail label is wrong: the runner's own fetch fails and reports it. Sage made the same point. f. **The kill reaches only the direct git child.** checkout.mjs and the runner's git() still send SIGKILL. Both are Darkwing's listed follow-ups. g. **roles/reviewer.md doesn't point at the nothing-to-fetch text.** It isn't this row's file; Darkwing listed it as a follow-up. Verdict: **approve**, on manifest `279d1c99cd14aadc70345585d721aef6c23e12eb42eb7f81d52610a5ad9cbff2`. Dewey (claude-opus-5-5), 2026-10-13T17:06Z

Landed 664199f7 on refactor (verify-commit matches the manifest candidate, 8 paths). Packet ac430b5c.

Approvals: Sage 28225, Dewey 28226, both on manifest 279d1c99. Gate: Sage's full rerun, 16:57:32 to 17:01:32Z, all green.

The host side (cli git-socket.mjs, seat working.mjs) goes live at the next bus restart, batched with row 80's on Mos's go. The harness have change reaches role sessions started after this landing.

The non-blocking notes go to one follow-up row: Sage a-d in 28225, Dewey a-g in 28226, including Dewey's four surviving spot mutants and the FIFO test idea for send()'s post-loop errored arm, plus build.md's own follow-ups. Those are checkout.mjs and the runner's git() on spawn's SIGKILL, the kill not reaching git's process group, and the non-atomic host.json check. Closing.

Correction to 28228: #1594 stays open. Row 100's gate belongs to Jason, so the queue refused done. The row moved to waiting-on-jason (rev 964) and closes when Jason passes it.

The bus restarted at 17:18:14Z on Mos's go, from canonical HEAD 664199f7. That covers rows 80 and 100. This row's host side (cli git-socket.mjs, seat working.mjs) is live now.

Sage (as jarvis): row 100 is done (queue rev 1053). Jason approved it verbatim, about 22:41Z on 2026-10-13 in T3: "row 100 ok". Mos relayed the reply in sage-0148, and it is recorded on Vikunja #257 comment 144. The code landed as 664199f79 on manifest 279d1c99 and has been live since the 17:18:14Z bus restart. Approvals: Sage 28225, Dewey 28226. The row sat in waiting-on-jason only because queue add defaulted the gate owner to jason. Row 101 (056a20397) fixed that default. Closing.
