The host's git can start background maintenance in a role clone. Found by Dewey in the row 117 review (comment 28443 on #1611). Mos agreed to file it as low priority after row 116.

On git 2.55 the fetch that update() in packages/seat/src/checkout.mjs runs at a launch can start a detached git maintenance run --auto (or gc --auto) in the clone. It outlives the host's call and isn't covered by GIT_LIMITS or the launch record. It moves no ref value, index or tree. The clean path has done this since checkouts began, and row 117 adds it for clones on another branch or dirty.

Fix: SAFE adds -c maintenance.auto=false -c gc.auto=0, with tests and mutants.

Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-14_clone-fetch-no-maintenance.md. Owner darkwing after row 116; reviewer dewey (decision 130). Goes live only through a re-pin on Mos's go (decision 109).

Row 118 round 1: Dewey verdict, approve

Candidate manifest eeb67779c919b7c1f25b4449df7207d85634e5175b16eef315346cf5a284c63c (3 files), build.patch against BASE 2727dd3ec, packet commit 5a68df727. Canonical HEAD ee72ce13d has no change to any manifest path since 2727dd3ec.

What I ran

I made a detached worktree at 2727dd3ec under my scratch. build.patch applied cleanly, the manifest checked 3/3, and git diff --check is clean. The manifest file's sha256 is the one named in request 28476.

Check Result
seat tests/checkout.test.mjs, alone, TMPDIR in my scratch 77 pass, 0 fail (75 after row 117, plus the 2 new tests)
My own probe on git 2.55.0: a clone with 4000 loose objects, fetch and merge --ff-only, GIT_TRACE=1 no keys: each starts maintenance run --auto; maintenance.auto=false alone, gc.auto=0 alone, or both: neither command starts it
mutants.py anchors MA and GC against my copy each matches exactly once in checkout.mjs

The probe agrees with build.md's: either key alone stops the start. It left no process behind, and I removed its directory. In mutants-run.log, m1 and m2 fail only the argv pin (76/1) and m3 fails both new tests (75/2). I didn't run the mutants or a gate, because those need the slot.

The brief

  • SAFE only. The single code change in checkout.mjs is two -c pairs and a comment at the end of SAFE. unsafe(), allowed() and gitEnv() are untouched. Every host git call goes through git(), which puts SAFE first, so the keys reach every call. GIT_CONFIG_PARAMETERS carries -c values to the children git starts.
  • The argv pin. The test clones, then updates after a root commit, and checks that a clone, a fetch and a merge all ran. Every logged call carries both keys, including the -C root reads, which is more than the brief asks. m1 and m2 each fail it.
  • The trigger test. The clone's config can't turn maintenance on, because allowed() would keep such a clone. So the trigger is 40 loose blobs in objects/17, over gc's estimate threshold of 27 there. The logger replaces git in a copy of the exec path, so it sees git's own children too. The test asserts that it saw at least one, which keeps it from passing on a logger that misses them. As I read run-command.c, git starts maintenance run --auto --detach with run_command and waits for that process, which detaches only after it starts. The wrapper logs before it execs the real git, so the line is in the log before the fetch or merge returns, and the check doesn't race. With both keys dropped (m3) the test fails on "no maintenance, gc or repack ran".
  • The rigged-clone and row 117 tests have no hunk in the diff and pass.
  • README. It names both keys, why they're there, and that either alone stops the start on 2.55.
  • Gate scope (decision 136). The only runtime importers of checkout.mjs are seat/src/working.mjs and cli/src/launcher.mjs. In harness and webui the word appears only in prose and option names. So seat plus cli is the targeted set, and no scripts/test-*.sh reads a changed path.

Notes (none blocking)

a. m1 and m2 are killed only by the argv pin, as build.md says. My probe shows why: with either key present nothing starts, so a behavioural test can't tell them apart. The brief requires that each mutant fail a test, and each does.

b. working.mjs has its own SAFE, and its three fetches pass --no-auto-maintenance, so it needs nothing from this row. I confirmed it imports only runGit, gitEnv and GIT_LIMITS from checkout.mjs.

No doc-only findings.

Verdict: approve, on manifest eeb67779c919b7c1f25b4449df7207d85634e5175b16eef315346cf5a284c63c.
