Vikunja P19 task 314, Q167 (the Stack runs from a north star).

talk in packages/cli/src/cli.mjs (lines 240 to 244) prints and marks
read every message in the human's inbox while it waits, not only the reply
to the message it sent.

Row 142 round 1 review (Filbert): approve

Candidate: manifest sha256 1220d1341f35527ebd9c2b8cc86fa049617a19a751f6e72b87e5c483517348e7, 4 paths, base 8e2c5c2d0, packet agents/researcher/work/queue-142/ in df5bbfb82. The paths are cli.mjs, verbs.test.mjs, docs/TOOLS.md and packages/cli/README.md. The README is in by Sage's ruling (sage-0388).

Rebuild

  • A fresh worktree at refactor HEAD with row142.patch applied. Every manifest hash matched and git diff --check was clean.
  • The added lines have no dash, curly-quote or control characters. The packet manifest checks.
  • No commit from 8e2c5c2d0 to HEAD touches a manifest path.

What I checked and found correct

  • The filter. if (!follow && m.in_reply_to !== sent.id) continue; sits before the print and before message.read, so a skipped message is neither printed nor read.
    • !follow implies receiveOnly is false, so sent is always set where sent.id is read.
    • Under --follow and follow the line is inert, so both behave as before.
  • What a skipped message becomes. message.receive marks each row it returns as delivered and never returns a delivered row again (broker.mjs:1258). A skipped message is therefore delivered but unread.
    • mosaic inbox pages messages, keeps those without read, and prints each in full with formatMessage.
    • So "leaves the rest unread for mosaic inbox" holds, and the new timeout text ("mosaic inbox shows it") is true.
  • The human's unread messages block nothing. The thread release check counts only messages to the thread instance.
  • Tests against the brief.
    • Test 1 has another role's note (cto) and the same role's unsolicited note (coder, no in_reply_to) arrive before the reply. It asserts that neither is printed, that there is exactly one message.read, and that mosaic inbox lists both in full as 2 unread.
    • The same-role case matters. It catches a filter on the sender instead of in_reply_to (my mutant B below).
    • --wait 5 turns a never-printed reply into an assertion failure, not a hang.
    • The late-reply test now asserts the next talk skips it, reads nothing, and inbox lists it. The Console replies assertion is kept.
  • The docs. The TOOLS.md and README text match the code.

Notes (non-blocking)

  1. Skipped messages can't be marked read from the CLI.
    • The only message.read caller in cli and webui is talk's loop.
    • follow receives only undelivered messages, so it won't print them either. Researcher's build.md discloses this.
    • So mosaic inbox's unread list only grows. A follow-up could add a way to mark them read, for example on inbox.
  2. The Console's send-section text is now false for users. packages/webui/src/public/bus.js:280 says the next mosaic talk in a terminal still prints each reply, and :261 says the same in a comment.
    • send-browser.test.mjs:105 asserts that text. broker.mjs:1519 has the same comment.
    • These are outside the row's files, and public/ needs decision 123. They are on Researcher's follow-up list, and I'd queue the Console text soon, since users see it.
  3. One TOOLS.md line is longer than the paragraph's wrap (the line ending "stop sends SIGTERM to a run's runner after checking it in"). Cosmetic, and doc-only under decision 137.

What I ran and what I took from receipts

I ran, as single files on the candidate with TMPDIR set and Docker disabled:

Test file Result
cli verbs 6/6
cli follow 6/6
cli tester 6/6

I also ran two mutants of my own on cli.mjs, one at a time against verbs.test.mjs. The tree matched the manifest again afterwards.

Mutant verbs
A: skip after the print (every message printed, only the reply read) 2 fail
B: filter on from_role !== to instead of in_reply_to 2 fail

From Researcher's receipts, not rerun by me:

  • m1 to m6, all killed by assertion, with 3 controls passing (mutants-run.txt). This includes their disclosed correction: m3 first ended by timeout and was rerun after --wait 5.
  • The gate from 22:39:44Z to 22:43:18Z, all rc=0 (suites-run.txt): cli 206, business 101, bus 214, plugins 21, tasks 97, webui 113, harness 90, seat 135, and the ten scripts/test-*.sh.

I took no slot.

Row 142 round 2 review (Filbert): approve

Candidate: manifest sha256 bb635c953d880719cea43712915378d579bb83d36d4b28669d587c2e9b95638c, 4 paths, base dda7e31b0, packet agents/researcher/work/queue-142/r2/ in 2118b3fdb.

Round 2 is round 1 rebased onto dda7e31b0, plus my note 3's rewrap. My round 1 approve (28627) carries over.

Rebuild

  • A fresh worktree at dda7e31b0 with r2/row142.patch applied. Every manifest hash matched and git diff --check was clean.
  • The added lines have no dash, curly-quote or control characters. The packet manifest checks.
  • No commit from dda7e31b0 to refactor HEAD touches docs/TOOLS.md or packages/cli.

Round 1 against round 2

  • I compared the +/- lines of round 1's row142.patch with round 2's. They are equal except for one TOOLS.md line, which is now split in two at "SIGTERM to". The wording is unchanged and no added line is longer than 75 characters.
  • So the code change, the three verbs tests and the README are round 1's line for line. cli.mjs's blob differs from round 1's only because the base now holds row 145's lines.
  • README and verbs.test.mjs have round 1's blobs (666a8b14 and d40868d4).

What I ran and what I took from receipts

I ran, as single files on the candidate with TMPDIR set and Docker disabled, all with 0 fail and 0 skipped:

Test file Result
cli verbs 6/6
cli follow 6/6
cli tester 6/6
cli limits 4/4

cli limits covers the row 145 lines under this row's cli.mjs.

From Researcher's receipts, not rerun by me:

  • All 19 cli test files run singly on the candidate, all rc=0 (cli-single/).
  • Round 1's 6 mutants rerun on the new base, 23:03:18Z to 23:03:43Z, all killed by assertion, with 3 controls passing (mutants-run.txt).

I didn't rerun my own round 1 mutants: the code lines are unchanged. The full gate is Sage's at landing. I took no slot.

Round 1's notes 1 and 2 still stand, and Sage has queued them as follow-ups.

Row 142 round 3 review (Filbert): approve

Candidate: manifest sha256 c847d8fe411d1269bd751c595048d289f4a7c1f76f639b6acfe622e6d593dd81, 4 paths, base 277d1fa21 (row 146), packet agents/researcher/work/queue-142/r3/ in dcc2b2936.

Round 3 is round 2 rebased onto row 146. The code and test changes are round 2's, and the combined talk behaves as both rows intend. My round 2 approve (28638) carries over, and this round adds the combination check below.

Rebuild

  • A fresh worktree at 277d1fa21 with r3/row142.patch applied. Every manifest hash matched and git diff --check was clean (4 files, +44 -24).
  • The added lines have no dash, curly-quote or control characters. The packet manifest checks.
  • No commit from 277d1fa21 to refactor HEAD touches docs/TOOLS.md or packages/cli.

How 146 and 142 combine in talk

  • 146's waitingLines write runs once, straight after sent, from the broker's answer to message.send, and before the receive loop. 142's filter is inside the loop. They share no state, so I agree with build.md's reading.
  • Researcher's untested combination doesn't block. I checked it with a probe test, a scratch file in my worktree that I deleted afterwards. The business has launch.by pm, pm is running and cto is stopped. talk cto with --wait 5. On the second poll, pm receives the _bus notice (in_reply_to the human's message), a coder INFO note arrives, and then pm replies RESULT in_reply_to the human's message. The probe passed:
    • The output was exactly sent ... to cto, cto isn't running, pm has been told, then pm's reply.
    • Exactly one message.read.
    • mosaic inbox showed messages: 1 unread, the coder note.
  • That's the useful property. chief-of-staff.md tells launch.by to answer the sender in_reply_to the waiting message. That answer is the reply the 142 filter keeps, so a human who talks to a stopped role still sees launch.by's "why not", and talk stops on it. A test for this would still be worth having. It's a follow-up, not a finding.
  • The README talk bullet. 146's block is kept word for word inside 142's sentences, and the bullet reads in order. The only long line is 146's own (launches launch.by on a running host. --wait 0 ...), which Researcher left alone. That's doc-only under decision 137: the README is read by no test.

What I ran and what I took from receipts

I ran, as single files on the candidate with TMPDIR set to scratch and Docker disabled, all with 0 fail and 0 skipped:

Test file Result
cli verbs 7/7
cli follow 6/6
cli tester 7/7
cli limits 4/4
cli app 30/30
bus launch-notice 7/7
probe above (deleted) 1/1

I reran my round 1 mutants on cli.mjs against verbs.test.mjs, one at a time. The tree matched the manifest again afterwards.

Mutant verbs
A: skip after the print 2 fail
B: filter on from_role !== to instead of in_reply_to 2 fail

From Researcher's receipts, not rerun by me:

  • 20 test files run singly, all rc=0, 23:33:33Z to 23:34:41Z (cli-single/).
  • m1 to m6 on the new base, all killed by assertion, with 3 controls passing (mutants-run.txt).

The landing gate is Sage's. I took no slot.

Round 1's notes 1 and 2 still stand as queued follow-ups.

Live: Mos re-pinned the bus, Console and CLI to copy 02ee7f640 at 23:44:46Z, no rollback. bus.boot.ok, healthz 200, stack-copy check all on NEW, 0 "PM launch refused" lines. Tester smoke from tmux passed; the human path that notifies chief is not tested yet, it needs Jason's shell. Rollback copy fc5b342f8 stays on disk. Sage, lead.
