Brief: docs/plans/2026-10-20_installer-rows.md, section I1 (mos-1118, Q187). stack-release.sh learns --units external (system units owned by root) behind one units backend, with row 195 DESIGN r6's adopt/activate/rollback/status, the AWAITING-UNITS marker and confirm/revert/gate --since. stack-copy.sh learns copy --bundle FILE SHA and wrapper ID --create. Under --units user nothing changes. Owner Darkwing, reviewer Filbert, gate owner Sage. Built on 00d4cc1f6 (row 190). Vikunja P19 #432. Target: in review 10-22, landed 10-23.

Row 232 (installer I1), round 1: APPROVE on manifest 7a3b4ea133cc4ef7573cd05338a937523991c8aa838782bf525781f6b76bd9c4 (9 paths, tree of 84f1a91e6 on darkwing/row232-r1, base cb5fdb064).

This was a static review. I ran no tests. The gate (cli 561/0, every scripts/test-*.sh green, sage-1618) and the 17/17 mutant kills are Darkwing's receipts from Sage's slot, which I read in BUILD.md.

Integrity

  • The sha256 of the manifest text equals the digest, and all 9 blobs match 84f1a91e6.
  • The path set equals git diff cb5fdb064 84f1a91e6.
  • Drift: git log cb5fdb064..refactor on the 9 paths shows only c8bc5cf4c (row 230, packages/cli/README.md). git merge-tree --write-tree refactor 84f1a91e6 is clean, with refactor at 816d48b03.

scripts/stack-release.sh (whole diff read against the brief's I1 and r6 section 4)

  • The sc/jctl/analyze backend: under external, sc allows only show, is-active and list-units, and the journal and analyze calls return 1. User mode keeps every --user call.
  • run_external keeps A3's order: an exclusive mkdir (marker-failed), AWAITING-UNITS first, then the capture (capture-failed removes the marker), then MIGRATING before migrate-schema, then the wrapper. A failure after the capture goes to ext_fail (FAILED, exit 1, no line).
  • open_activation needs exactly one marker for ID that the log holds open, and leaves ACT unset, so refusals carry no activation.
  • do_confirm writes the started line's op, from, to and backup. On --rollback it handles the cause codes, units-start for A4, unrecorded, not-attempted after a restore, and rollback-failed with exit 2.
  • do_revert restores TAKEN only under MIGRATING. do_gate takes no lock and writes nothing.
  • The stale-start floor is in whole seconds. pm_external filters on instance === launch.by, live, business and startedAt >= floor.
  • In do_rollback the to-not-previous refusal comes before the pointer checks. It logs nothing under --plan, and sequence 7 checks the log count.
  • The user-mode plan() body is unchanged, moved into the else branch.

scripts/stack-copy.sh

  • copy --bundle: it requires a full id and a regular non-symlink file. It runs git bundle verify in a temporary bare repo, requires refs/heads/refactor in list-heads, fetches every ref, and checks cat-file -e and then merge-base --is-ancestor ID refs/heads/refactor. copy_tree is shared with copy, and the trap removes the temporary repo with the temporary copy.
  • --allow-worktree and --bin are usage errors with --bundle.
  • wrapper --create uses ln into place, so it refuses any existing path (a symlink included) with no check-then-write gap. The instance path goes through the same place.
  • check --units external changes only the systemctl show scope.

Tests

  • stack-release.test.mjs: one import line added, 416 lines removed, and ^test( stays at 75 before and after. The removed lines equal stack-release-fixture.mjs minus export prefixes, except for these additions: argv.log, the file field, instance:'chief' plus the twolive and coder modes, the show argument parse, ActiveEnterTimestamp and FragmentPath, start enter times, status-until, export on S and U, and the T17 marker exemption (D2).
  • stack-release-external.test.mjs: the 25 tests cover every r6 :742-812 item I checked, including all 8 sequences. Among them: refusals with no activation and an unchanged open set, the gate byte-identical snapshot, gate without --since as usage, the same-second pass via the enter flip to T0 with started at .900, the full PM case set (with the coder entry that doesn't count) and no journal calls.
  • The user-mode argv test compares candidate against base calls with --user on each one. The four --plan outputs are compared byte for byte with base scripts from git show cb5fdb064: (D3).
  • stack-copy.test.mjs: bundle success with a byte-identical tree versus copy SHA, the exists rerun, a relative path, and refusals for not reachable, no refactor ref, not a bundle, a corrupt pack, a truncated pack, absent, a short id and a symlink, each with no copy and no temporary repo left behind. --create: refusals over its own wrapper, a foreign file and a symlink, with bytes unchanged; the same bytes as wrapper ID; and the named instance once.
  • Mutants: r6's re-pin list minus the three case1-repin.sh ones (I3's), plus the brief's two (m16 bundle reachability, m17 --create overwrite).

Readers and pins: git grep over 'packages//tests/' and 'scripts/test-*.sh' (positive control: stack-copy.test.mjs, 38 hits) found no 64-hex pin near any manifest path. The other readers (stack-instances.test.mjs runs stack-copy.sh; channel-fixture.mjs and stack-release.test.mjs mention names only in comments or strings) are in the cli suite the gate ran.

Non-blocking notes (no change asked)

  • N1. The user-mode tests depend on commit cb5fdb064 being in the test repo's object store. A shallow or bundle-only checkout would fail them. D3 records that a later user-mode change moves BASE.
  • N2. D2's T17 exemption also applies to user-mode runs. User mode never writes either marker, since only run_external does, but no user-mode test asserts their absence after a non-plan run. Only the --plan test checks that no stack-rollback directory exists.
  • N3. copy_bundle computes the bundle sha256 after the fetch, so a file swapped between the two would print a sum for different bytes. The file is the stack user's own, so I don't count this as a boundary.
**Row 232 (installer I1), round 1: APPROVE** on manifest `7a3b4ea133cc4ef7573cd05338a937523991c8aa838782bf525781f6b76bd9c4` (9 paths, tree of 84f1a91e6 on `darkwing/row232-r1`, base cb5fdb064). Row 232 (installer I1), round 2: APPROVE on manifest 7af3c94308e0ce99d88fb40624ad26592305624b139a95a0582991bdd2666b50 (darkwing/row232-r2 da2da2f6c on 8fede5fc6). This is the scoped rebase check from sage-1673/1674, not a re-review. I ran no tests, and this round needs no slot.

Integrity

  • The queue's round 2 manifest text hashes to the digest, and all 9 sha256 entries match the files at da2da2f6c.
  • The path set equals round 1's.
  • 8fede5fc6 is an ancestor of the tip. origin/refactor is still 8fede5fc6, with no commits on the 9 paths after it, and git merge-tree --write-tree is clean.

1. README 3-way merge. I built the expected file myself before the branch was pushed: git merge-file -p with ours 8fede5fc6, base cb5fdb064 and theirs 84f1a91e6. It's clean, and the result is blob 89a95b32c2bed4d8d4fdcd204b200349ac02f8ad. da2da2f6c's packages/cli/README.md is that same blob. Row 232's hunk is byte-identical between diff base r1 and diff new r2, shifted by one line (776 to 777). The only commit on the 9 paths between 84f1a91e6 and 8fede5fc6 is row 230's c8bc5cf4c, on the README alone.

2. Other blobs. These seven are identical to the files approved in round 1 (84f1a91e6, manifest 7a3b4ea1): TOOLS.md, stack-copy.sh, stack-release.sh, stack-copy.test.mjs, stack-release.test.mjs, stack-release-fixture.mjs and stack-release-external.test.mjs. BUILD.md is +31/-0, a single appended "Round 2" section. I read it, and its claims check out (below).

3. Readers.

  • None of row 232's four test files mentions README, case2-unit, case2-precheck or queue-230. The positive control, stack-copy.sh in the fixture, gave 2 hits.
  • The one test that reads this README is packages/cli/tests/host.test.mjs:855. It asserts that the README includes the rendered `EnvironmentFile=-%h/...` line, which is row 230's paragraph at :710. Row 232's hunk doesn't touch that line (0 EnvironmentFile matches in the r1..r2 README diff), so the assertion holds on the merged file.
  • Correction to my round 1 comment (29829): I said no test reads packages/cli/README.md. That was wrong. My grep used the literal path, and host.test.mjs builds it with join(REPO, "packages", "cli", "README.md"). The round 1 gate ran the cli suite, which includes host.test.mjs, so the miss changed no result. It was a gap in my reader check, and this round's grep was on README.

BUILD.md follow-up claim checked: scripts/case2-unit.sh:108 and scripts/case2-precheck.sh:157 cite stack-copy.sh:8 and :22. At the tip, COPIES and copy_root are at :10 and :26. These are comments only, so it's doc-only and goes on the #1732 carry list as BUILD.md says.

My three non-blocking notes from round 1 stay on the carry list (sage-1674).

**Row 232 (installer I1), round 2: APPROVE** on manifest `7af3c94308e0ce99d88fb40624ad26592305624b139a95a0582991bdd2666b50` (darkwing/row232-r2 da2da2f6c on 8fede5fc6). This is the scoped rebase check from sage-1673/1674, not a re-review. I ran no tests, and this round needs no slot. **Integrity** - The queue's round 2 manifest text hashes to the digest, and all 9 sha256 entries match the files at da2da2f6c. - The path set equals round 1's. - 8fede5fc6 is an ancestor of the tip. `origin/refactor` is still 8fede5fc6, with no commits on the 9 paths after it, and `git merge-tree --write-tree` is clean. **1. README 3-way merge.** I built the expected file myself before the branch was pushed: `git merge-file -p` with ours 8fede5fc6, base cb5fdb064 and theirs 84f1a91e6. It's clean, and the result is blob `89a95b32c2bed4d8d4fdcd204b200349ac02f8ad`. da2da2f6c's `packages/cli/README.md` is that same blob. Landed on refactor as e65a3ab4d (base 0444acd08), pushed.

  • Source: Darkwing's round 2 da2da2f6c on darkwing/row232-r2, the 9 manifest paths. Manifest 7af3c943, and the landed files pass it. File modes match the candidate.
  • Patch-id 5adfbab9 equals git diff 8fede5fc6..da2da2f6c on those paths.
  • Review: Filbert approve, round 1 (comment 29829) and round 2 (comment 29865). Round 2 was the rebase over row 230's README hunk, a clean 3-way merge.
  • Mutants: 17 of 17 killed (BUILD.md).
  • Darkwing's landing gate on da2da2f6c, 03:07:15Z to 03:17:48Z: packages/cli 593 pass 0 fail, 10 scripts/test-*.sh suites 429 pass 0 fail, plus 156 node tests in the queue suite.

Live state: no change. The stack runs from copy 4429a104f, and --units user stays the default.

Follow-ups:

  • Filbert's 3 non-blocking round 1 notes stay on the installer carry list.
  • The stale stack-copy.sh line cites in case2-unit.sh:108 and case2-precheck.sh:157 are on the #1732 carry list (comment 29863).
  • Row 233 (I3, upgrade command and host run sheet) is next on the installer line (Vikunja #432).

Queue: row 232 done (revs 2629-2630).

Installer carry list: Filbert's three non-blocking notes from the row 232 round 1 review (comment 29829). None blocks the landing (e65a3ab4d). Each goes to the next installer row that opens the file named.

  • N1. The user-mode tests in packages/cli/tests/stack-release.test.mjs depend on commit cb5fdb064 being in the test repo's object store. A shallow or bundle-only checkout would fail them. A later user-mode change moves BASE (D3 in queue-232/BUILD.md).
  • N2. D2's T17 marker exemption also applies to user-mode runs. User mode never writes either marker, since only run_external does, but no user-mode test asserts that they're absent after a non-plan run. Add that assert.
  • N3. copy_bundle in scripts/stack-copy.sh computes the bundle sha256 after the fetch, so a file swapped between the two would print a sum for different bytes. The file is the stack user's own, so this isn't a boundary. Hashing before the fetch, or fetching from a copy, closes it.
